@PhilOutsider I said no economists are arguing against tariffs because they value global economic efficiency than all other costs. Domestic jobs are valuable. The contention of most economists is that tariffs on-net destroy domestic jobs.

Please find me one prominent economist who argues against tariffs on the grounds it would help "global efficiency" at the expense of domestic welfare. It's also crazy that you slander economists by pairing them with public health people, when arguably the two bravest and effective intellectuals against the excesses of covid policy were economists (@DrJBhattacharya and @ProfEmilyOster).

Another magical assumption that tariff opposition is just driven by libertarianism. Economists that favor government intervention in many, many different spheres generally oppose tariffs. Might it actually be the pro-tariff people who are letting ideology influence their empirical view of the world?
