For all the talk about how screwed up our West Coast ports are, port of Long Beach said today it will process more than 9 million TEUs by the end of the year. Previous record was 8.1 million in 2020. They're now at 8.6 million.

In an absolutely stunning move, BP is buying $TA for $86 per share. This is a company that for years has been talking energy transition and now it's buying a giant chain of truck stops that serves #diesel trucks. We'll try to figure out why later today at FreightWaves. #trucking

3Q numbers out at $CHRW, about as bad as you would have expected: Income from operations down 60.5%. Adjusted operating margin down 1450 bps, down 1070 bps excluding restructuring. EPS down 61.8%. Adjusted EPS down 52.8%. Cash from ops down $420.2 million to $205.2 million.

@ndrew_lawrence Let's be clear about what he did. He made 12 consecutive jokes on Twitter about Japan right after the tsunami. He did this even though he was making presumably a ton of $$ for AFLAC, which has a huge Japanese business. This isn't cancel culture. It's capitalism.

Buyers of #diesel who have been hearing for years about US refinery shutdowns need instead to hear some good news for a change: $XOM opened its Beaumont, Texas expansion today, 250k b/d of new capacity. They say it's the biggest US expansion in 10 years, which sounds about right.

@the_transit_guy When you have a major disruption in an economic lifeline, you can talk about that without that being interpreted as not caring about the loss of life. The port of Baltimore is effectively closed and will be for awhile. You don't think there aren't going to be economic losses?

(1/2) Not much to see here: employment in the truck transportation sector rose slightly in November from October, according to BLS report. Employment in Nov was 1,601,300, up from a revised figure of 1.6 million. But in warehouses, the declines continue.

An important reminder: the one commodity that the US government has banned from futures trading is the onion. It was 60's era legislation sponsored by Gerald Ford on the grounds that prices were too volatile. Somehow it didn't seem to work.

The weekly EIA data is out and it shows that East Coast inventories of ultra low sulfur #diesel , already at some of the lowest numbers ever, fell again last week. They came in at 19.1 million barrels, down from 20.3 million bbl. When the year started, they were 38.5 million bbl.

More on #trucking jobs numbers: In the 10+ years of data BLS provides on its website, only time truck transportation sector lost more jobs was in Apr 2020, start of COVID. Next-biggest loss after Sept drop of 11,400 jobs was 7,000 in Mar '20, when pandemic was just starting.

(1/2) Two significant charts for #trucking from just-released EIA #oil stats. First, it is clear that demand for diesel--which the EIA calls "product supplied"--is dropping. Given that 85-90% of distillate figure is diesel based on consumption, demand pattern is pretty clear.

@wesbury Given that he was a private citizen, he wasn't required to have one. But the question is if he was President, would he have sat there and told everybody it was going to disappear like magic? I'm pretty sure the answer to that is no, and there would have been a plan beyond hoping.

Great job by the folks at @OPIS to combine retail #gasoline data with average earnings data and produce this graphic on the affordability of gasoline in each state. It's measured by how many minutes a person needs to work to afford a gallon, given avg retail prices and avg wages.

A screen capture of the fuel mix on the New England #electricity grid at about 1:10 p.m. I am stunned that about 31% of their electricity is coming from #oil which in 2022 is--dare I say it--barbaric. So yeah, keep blocking #natgas pipeline capacity from coming in. Well done.

At the @UBS conference, $HTLD CEO Mike Gerdin is definitely in the camp of the freight market not getting any better. April was worse than March; May and June are a bit better but flat; and “at this point we’re taking pretty much everything we can get our hands on.” #trucking

Last year, I wrote the FreightWaves story on the Inc. 5000 and what logistics companies were on it. FreightWaves wasn't eligible because it didn't have enough years producing revenue to make the cut. But we are this year...big time! 85 out of 5,000.

OK, I think we're done here: this is the TRAC rate in @SONAR_FW for Columbus, OH to NYC. If the #trucking boycott had an impact, it absolutely would have shown up here. Umm...does anybody see signs of a boycott of truck capacity into NYC in this chart? The "boycott" was a flop.

It's the biggest one-week decline in the DOE/EIA benchmark #diesel price since August 15. It's still above $5/gallon, but recent declines in the diesel futures price--down about 50 cents in 12 trading days--signal further drops in retail prices ahead.

Significant milestone on the roads occured in Nov, according to Dep't of Transportation: miles traveled in 11/21 were more than in 11/19, first time that most recent numbers exceeded pre-pandemic corresponding month. VMT was 267.5 billion in 11/21; was 260.3 billion 2 years ago.

@PYZC773 My son went to the University of Delaware ,in Newark, DE. He figured out you could go LIRR to NJ Transit, change in Trenton for SEPTA, change in Philly for the Newark train and get to college that way. Of course, it would take him like all day. But it could be done.

Verdict on earnings at $CHRW has been swift and savage. It hit a 52-wk low at $71.57 today. It was $89.71 as recently as Jan 5. Stock hasn't been this low since May '20. At its nadir today it was down 14.9% from Wed close. It popped back to $73.35 by 3:45 pm EST. #trucking

Earnings at $FWRD came in below expectations and the bloodbath rolls on. At 5:30 am stock was down $4.16, 10.6% from Wednesday close, trading at $34.99. 52 weeks ago today it closed at $104.06. Market cap now flirting with $1B; it's a drop of about $1.7B in market cap in a year.

Missed it by that much: the 21.3 cts/gallon decline in the benchmark DOE/EIA average retail #diesel price was almost the largest ever. It was edged out only by a 21.6 cents decline on October 13, 2008, as global markets were sliding in the wake of Lehman Brothers' collapse.

Another chart on the #trucking slowdown: in what is almost assuredly its last earnings release, the quarterly earnings of $TA reported its #diesel sales were below 500 million gallons for the first quarter and were down 5.7% from 3Q peak.

@the_transit_guy I spoke at a conference once north of Atlanta at a hotel not that far from a MARTA station. Took it, went Uber the rest of the way. When I told people at the conference what I did, they looked at me like I was insane...and then told me how long they sat in traffic to get there.

It's been a pretty dramatic drop in ultra low sulfur #diesel prices this week. One caution: the final price in this series is for August barrels; the other 5 five are July. But July expired Thursday. The Aug price of $3.9389 Friday was up 10.84 cts/g from the Aug price Thursday.

Calif. Gov. Newsom signed yet another #AB5 exemption, this time for newspaper delivery. The list of exemptions is huge, suggesting the law's authors didn't really care about anything other than making it apply to #trucking (blocked by injunction) and app-based drivers (in limbo).

Most remarkable thing about this week in #diesel is not just that the CME price fell so much, but that its spread against Brent dropped about 30 cts/g. That spread has been elevated for months. The decline suggests the market may be finding some normalcy, whatever that might be.

Remember back in June when $R rejected the takeover attempt by HG Vora? The offer price was $86. Smart move: Ryder today hit a 52-week high at $97.26. It's up 28.7% in the last month alone. Another 52-week high today: $WBC, up more than 52% in the last month.

@upstatefederlst Joe Biden did take Amtrak every day. I saw him on it a couple of times and I was riding it only occasionally to go to Washingon. I'm not sure how you define "every day" but it was a regular part of his routine.
