#ILefttheGOP
right after Trump sewed up nomination by winning Indiana. I had voted for every GOP Prez candidate Ford to Romney. My father was the last Majority Leader of the NY Assembly. Local issues played a part too. This free trader globalist can't ever imagine going back.
@Tom_Winter
But you know what? The accusation wins. Because you had to waste time finding this info out, and for those who live in MAGA land, they figure you're MSM so they don't believe you anyway.
For all the talk about how screwed up our West Coast ports are, port of Long Beach said today it will process more than 9 million TEUs by the end of the year. Previous record was 8.1 million in 2020. They're now at 8.6 million.
@EWErickson
When you are a political leader, especially one with Presidential aspirations, optics and judgement matter. The optics here are terrible. The fact that his judgement is so poor that he couldn't have seen that speaks volumes about his arrogance.
@Gabby_Hoffman
The coal industry has been far more damaged by the rise of natural gas supplies and its long-term decline in price than any government fiat. It's not even close.
This is a chart of total
#oil
stocks in OECD nations just published by
@IEA
. The red line is the current level of stocks. The blue area is the range the last five years. It doesn't really need any additional commentary; the picture very much is worth a thousand words.
@JuddLegum
Such a massive flaw in your reasoning, and others have mentioned it: you are assuming that the information flow--in other words, the reports of shoplifting--have not been impacted at all by a feeling that reporting it is a total waste of time. You're assuming reporting is static.
@JustinWolfers
It is the employment rate for an economy going through something it has never gone through before: a steady exit of baby boomers from the ranks of the employed but who have pretty good savings, so they're still demanding goods and services but they aren't working.
@mitchellvii
I rode more than 40 miles on a bicycle with one, including some significant hills. You must not be in very good shape if a mere mask impacted your breathing.
@RepMarkMeadows
@patchofdarkness
It got 217 votes, which is not "easily." Second, a lot of Reps could vote for it knowing it wasn't going anywhere in the Senate. It was an empty vote.
In an absolutely stunning move, BP is buying $TA for $86 per share. This is a company that for years has been talking energy transition and now it's buying a giant chain of truck stops that serves
#diesel
trucks. We'll try to figure out why later today at FreightWaves.
#trucking
3Q numbers out at $CHRW, about as bad as you would have expected: Income from operations down 60.5%. Adjusted operating margin down 1450 bps, down 1070 bps excluding restructuring. EPS down 61.8%. Adjusted EPS down 52.8%. Cash from ops down $420.2 million to $205.2 million.
@ndrew_lawrence
Let's be clear about what he did. He made 12 consecutive jokes on Twitter about Japan right after the tsunami. He did this even though he was making presumably a ton of $$ for AFLAC, which has a huge Japanese business. This isn't cancel culture. It's capitalism.
@jdruva41
@EWErickson
She is not the right's answer to AOC. AOC is wrong on many, many issues. I disagree with her on most things. But nobody thinks of her as crazy, insane or deranged. Big difference.
@RealSaavedra
It is entirely possible to be against the death penalty and think that these individuals who are going to be executed are disgusting human beings who should never see the light of day. Those two views are not at odds with each other.
@wesbury
Just throwing out a theory: without mask wearing the curve would look the same but at higher numbers. Impossible to prove but something to consider. The drop in flu cases supports some efficacy of mask wearing.
@muchado33
@bekahowell
Exactly. Why would a drug dealer give away drugs that he paid for instead of actually trying to, you know, sell it? Which is how they make their money, right? SMH.
@charliekirk11
How big do you think the local Davos police force is? 10,000 people live there full time. There is no way their local police force is big enough to handle the security needs of a meeting like the WEF. Sorry to burst your conspiracy theory bubble.
@benshapiro
The media did not call for a nationwide lockdown because they understand--unlike Trump supporters--that the federal government has no such power. It is up to the states to do that. Your statement is absurd and typically lazy: every 15 minutes, criticize the media just because.
@ByronYork
Because the people of this area are willing to accept the fact that its leaders were on the front lines of this pandemic and had no time to truly prepare. What is the excuse for Florida, Texas and Arizona? They were given the opportunity of an education and rejected it.
@GasBuddyGuy
And this fuel was significantly dirtier than what we are burning today. We can "dirty up" the gasoline pool tomorrow: lead, sulfur, benzene, etc. And it would be cheaper. Would that be wise public policy?
@EWErickson
How about the obsession is the fact that this was a massive attack on our democracy, one of the two major parties in the U.S. thinks it was no big deal, and the story doesn't conveniently stop being a story because you think "time's up."
Buyers of
#diesel
who have been hearing for years about US refinery shutdowns need instead to hear some good news for a change: $XOM opened its Beaumont, Texas expansion today, 250k b/d of new capacity. They say it's the biggest US expansion in 10 years, which sounds about right.
@the_transit_guy
When you have a major disruption in an economic lifeline, you can talk about that without that being interpreted as not caring about the loss of life. The port of Baltimore is effectively closed and will be for awhile. You don't think there aren't going to be economic losses?
@imjdsharp
@kylegriffin1
Remember that because of the Schengen border rules in the EU, you can emigrate from any EU country to another freely. So if they want to leave their country, why wouldn't they go someplace where the movement is free and easy instead of increasingly difficult?
(1/2) Not much to see here: employment in the truck transportation sector rose slightly in November from October, according to BLS report. Employment in Nov was 1,601,300, up from a revised figure of 1.6 million. But in warehouses, the declines continue.
@LK_Rigel
@GrwnAssKid2
@JoyAnnReid
The Fairness Doctrine would never have applied to Fox or MSNBC or any cable network. They do not use the public airways so there is no legal basis for that sort of regulation.
An important reminder: the one commodity that the US government has banned from futures trading is the onion. It was 60's era legislation sponsored by Gerald Ford on the grounds that prices were too volatile. Somehow it didn't seem to work.
The weekly EIA data is out and it shows that East Coast inventories of ultra low sulfur
#diesel
, already at some of the lowest numbers ever, fell again last week. They came in at 19.1 million barrels, down from 20.3 million bbl. When the year started, they were 38.5 million bbl.
@CynthiaNixon
@AOC
There's a legal notice requirement for all candidates who are on the ballot. A notice is printed in a newspaper several weeks before election day listing the candidates and their addresses. This isn't secret. What address did she post and does she live there? Reasonable question.
@mjs_DC
You know what I'll make of it? That law can be complex and despite what everybody on Twitter wants, maybe the law and the world doesn't always fall into everybody's pre-conceived left vs. right notions. Maybe we're called on to actually do some thinking sometimes.
@CNN
Stop using pictures of beaches to illustrate a super spreader event. Beaches, outdoors and bathed by UV light, are not the places where the virus spreads.
@RpsAgainstTrump
What's staggering about this is that this little video did take some time to put together. At some point in the production of it, he could have said "maybe this isn't a good idea." That he didn't say it speaks volumes, but we knew about this guy already. Still a harsh reminder.
More on
#trucking
jobs numbers: In the 10+ years of data BLS provides on its website, only time truck transportation sector lost more jobs was in Apr 2020, start of COVID. Next-biggest loss after Sept drop of 11,400 jobs was 7,000 in Mar '20, when pandemic was just starting.
(1/2) Two significant charts for
#trucking
from just-released EIA
#oil
stats. First, it is clear that demand for diesel--which the EIA calls "product supplied"--is dropping. Given that 85-90% of distillate figure is diesel based on consumption, demand pattern is pretty clear.
@JonahDispatch
Never mind the fact that he didn't catch the satire. He RTd a tweet about Twitter shutting down and did it on Twitter. He apparently never stopped to realize the ridiculousness of a tweet saying Twitter was shut down and doing it on that same "shuttered" network.
@wesbury
Given that he was a private citizen, he wasn't required to have one. But the question is if he was President, would he have sat there and told everybody it was going to disappear like magic? I'm pretty sure the answer to that is no, and there would have been a plan beyond hoping.
Great job by the folks at
@OPIS
to combine retail
#gasoline
data with average earnings data and produce this graphic on the affordability of gasoline in each state. It's measured by how many minutes a person needs to work to afford a gallon, given avg retail prices and avg wages.
A screen capture of the fuel mix on the New England
#electricity
grid at about 1:10 p.m. I am stunned that about 31% of their electricity is coming from
#oil
which in 2022 is--dare I say it--barbaric. So yeah, keep blocking
#natgas
pipeline capacity from coming in. Well done.
@TracyAMHall1
@abeastli
@MeidasTouch
No, Trump was talking about running against Jeb Bush and said about him that "he got us into the Middle East." He clearly confused the two Bushes. Just listen to it.
At the
@UBS
conference, $HTLD CEO Mike Gerdin is definitely in the camp of the freight market not getting any better. April was worse than March; May and June are a bit better but flat; and “at this point we’re taking pretty much everything we can get our hands on.”
#trucking
Last year, I wrote the FreightWaves story on the Inc. 5000 and what logistics companies were on it. FreightWaves wasn't eligible because it didn't have enough years producing revenue to make the cut. But we are this year...big time! 85 out of 5,000.
A brave and dangerous new world awaits the California

#AB5
will become the law of the land in that state, and the independent owner operator model will have to adapt in radical ways to survive.
@mattklewis
No typos. No spelling errors. Proper grammar. Comes in a 15-minute flurry. And the perfect touch: parantheses around K in 401K. Anybody who believes he sat there on his phone and sent these out probably misses playing 3-card monty in Times Square.
OK, I think we're done here: this is the TRAC rate in
@SONAR_FW
for Columbus, OH to NYC. If the
#trucking
boycott had an impact, it absolutely would have shown up here. Umm...does anybody see signs of a boycott of truck capacity into NYC in this chart? The "boycott" was a flop.
It's the biggest one-week decline in the DOE/EIA benchmark
#diesel
price since August 15. It's still above $5/gallon, but recent declines in the diesel futures price--down about 50 cents in 12 trading days--signal further drops in retail prices ahead.
Significant milestone on the roads occured in Nov, according to Dep't of Transportation: miles traveled in 11/21 were more than in 11/19, first time that most recent numbers exceeded pre-pandemic corresponding month. VMT was 267.5 billion in 11/21; was 260.3 billion 2 years ago.
@PYZC773
My son went to the University of Delaware ,in Newark, DE. He figured out you could go LIRR to NJ Transit, change in Trenton for SEPTA, change in Philly for the Newark train and get to college that way. Of course, it would take him like all day. But it could be done.
@drkerrymeltzer
I just read this in the Times and then came to your Twitter page. Thank you. Your uncle has long been a dangerous demagogue on this issue. It is tremendous that you have spoken out.

@News12
@News12LI
@KevinVesey
There very much is. First of all, if you don't want to watch it, don't. Second, it shines a light on the fact that while there are many people concerned about the impact of the shutdown, there is a group that is driven by hate and rage, beyond any sort of reasonable discussion.
The
#oil
industry has lost a giant: Esa Ramasamy. Not even sure what his title was with
@SPGCIOil
, but his strength was to know more about markets than anybody on the planet. An ambassador to every corner of the globe for Platts and a friend to all. We will miss him.

@drdavidsamadi
The media is not "hyping" it. The media is writing about it. When you say that current therapeutics and vaccines are effective, you know what? The media reported that too. They're doing their job.
@billjamesonline
George Bell in 1987, because he was a butcher in the outfield, disappeared in the last week of the season and Trammel was so, so much better that year.
@OSUkillernuts
It's true he isn't in the current Trumpian GOP of sheer ignorance that believes we have a great economy but need negative interest rates, that a trade deficit means you "lost" at trade and thinks Russia is our friend and Ukraine is our enemy. He is in the one that had a brain.
Verdict on earnings at $CHRW has been swift and savage. It hit a 52-wk low at $71.57 today. It was $89.71 as recently as Jan 5. Stock hasn't been this low since May '20. At its nadir today it was down 14.9% from Wed close. It popped back to $73.35 by 3:45 pm EST.
#trucking
@dagenmcdowell
So Joe Biden has been leading the polls essentially forever, the market has been mostly trending higher during that time, but six days before the election the markets suddenly decide to turn lower on news that has been out there for months. Got it.
Earnings at $FWRD came in below expectations and the bloodbath rolls on. At 5:30 am stock was down $4.16, 10.6% from Wednesday close, trading at $34.99. 52 weeks ago today it closed at $104.06. Market cap now flirting with $1B; it's a drop of about $1.7B in market cap in a year.

The biggest misconception out there is that Fauci has called for more shutdowns. He has called for exactly the opposite, that students should be back at school and that colleges should absolutely not close down and send their students home.
@CindyCoops
@RyanGirdusky
If there are criminal penalties in the law that could result in jail, it's tough to walk away from that. And saying "well, we'll just prosecute the doctors" isn't going to be seen as a significant difference.
(1/2) The quarterly letter from $TFIN CEO Graft, and his earnings call, always has good information on the state of

Missed it by that much: the 21.3 cts/gallon decline in the benchmark DOE/EIA average retail
#diesel
price was almost the largest ever. It was edged out only by a 21.6 cents decline on October 13, 2008, as global markets were sliding in the wake of Lehman Brothers' collapse.
Another chart on the

@the_transit_guy
I spoke at a conference once north of Atlanta at a hotel not that far from a MARTA station. Took it, went Uber the rest of the way. When I told people at the conference what I did, they looked at me like I was insane...and then told me how long they sat in traffic to get there.
@Kayleyjanek
Believe me it was easy. De-registered from the GOP as soon as Trump got the nomination in ‘16 and voted for my last Republican 3 or 4 years ago.
It's been a pretty dramatic drop in ultra low sulfur
#diesel
prices this week. One caution: the final price in this series is for August barrels; the other 5 five are July. But July expired Thursday. The Aug price of $3.9389 Friday was up 10.84 cts/g from the Aug price Thursday.
@drdavidsamadi
You know what else is up? Copper. Tin. Lumber. All sorts of agricultural products. Natural gas. Virtually all asset classes are higher. Why would oil be any different?
Calif. Gov. Newsom signed yet another
#AB5
exemption, this time for newspaper delivery. The list of exemptions is huge, suggesting the law's authors didn't really care about anything other than making it apply to
#trucking
(blocked by injunction) and app-based drivers (in limbo).
Most remarkable thing about this week in
#diesel
is not just that the CME price fell so much, but that its spread against Brent dropped about 30 cts/g. That spread has been elevated for months. The decline suggests the market may be finding some normalcy, whatever that might be.
Good quote from $USX CEO Eric Fuller on weak

rates, even as volume improves. “There are a lot of zombie companies out there barely making it through the day. They are not cash flowing. They will have to come out of the market." Says it will happen in next few quarters.
Remember back in June when $R rejected the takeover attempt by HG Vora? The offer price was $86. Smart move: Ryder today hit a 52-week high at $97.26. It's up 28.7% in the last month alone. Another 52-week high today: $WBC, up more than 52% in the last month.
@upstatefederlst
Joe Biden did take Amtrak every day. I saw him on it a couple of times and I was riding it only occasionally to go to Washingon. I'm not sure how you define "every day" but it was a regular part of his routine.
@ElectionWiz
The media supressed coverage of her? You mean, as opposed to the heavy coverage that the race for lieutenant governor gets in most states?
