Every year in the Khutzeymateen, we are left with at least one bear that leaves a lasting impression on us and becomes a bit of an icon, a bear that just begs to be introduced to the world. And so I present u w Log Bear...click to see him in all his panoramic glory!
So the AB Govt basically just used the $90 Kananaskis Pass all of us hikers/skiers/bikers/etc pay each year to access the area to fund $8M in ATV Trail upgrades, despite ATV users BEING EXEMPT from having to buy the pass. Tell us more about how you’re “protecting our parks”

A little glimpse back on

at some of my most amazing encounters from my month searching for cougars in January of this year. Which one's your fave?
You all are not going to believe what we've uncovered in the past 24 hours. Minister Loewen needs to step down immediately. He's not fit to be protecting our wildlife. Stay tuned for details.
EDITORIAL: The return of a measure of grizzly bear hunt – particularly without public consultation – is the latest failing of the provincial government when it comes to managing wildlife.
I'm getting told I don't post enough pics here on Twitter for a professional wildlife photographer, so here's to a dedicated push toward changing that. This gorgeous female grizzly is from up in the Yukon. Have a great weekend, everyone!
An exceptionally out of touch Minister in Alberta. Shocking. Moraine Lake has become a zoo and Parks Canada made a great call restricting personal vehicles.
Parks are for people here in Alberta. See my attached statement on the Federal Government’s decision to block personal use vehicles at Moraine Lake.

BIG day today: I get to ring the bell here in Canmore at the Chemo Spa. Thank you to everyone out there that has helped support me on this journey. I'm in disbelief that I'm finally there...cancer-free, BABY!!!!!!
What a difference a year makes. A year ago today I was down to 159 lbs (fr 185) recovering in Foothills in Calgary after surgery to remove 2 cancerous tumors (that's skinny me in the pic w my son). A year later I'm chasing muskox, moose and more in the wild doing what I love.

What's missing from that 'runner killed a cougar with his bare hands' story is that it was essentially a kitten, likely starving to death and likely because it's mom was probably killed in the legal cougar hunt in Colorado. 34% of cougars killed by hunters are females in the U.S.
I am thrilled to announce that I have an image in this year's People Choice Award of the 2023 Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition (the Oscars of wildlife photography). Just 25 images make the cut each year out of 50K+ entries. Vote here /1
Was Jan 7th the Deadliest Day this winter? On Sunday this past weekend, much of Western Canada celebrated as the first real snowfall in almost a month blanketed the landscape. Skiers skied, snowshoers snowshoed, photographers photographed...and hound hunters hunted. /1
Another look at one of my faves from 2021, this wolverine encounter was one of the great thrills of my career. How else do you describe being 25m from this elusive beauty?!! And as w all of my photography, this was natural -- not baited, not called in, just luck & a bit of skill
Just another crappy day of orcas and blue skies near the entrance to Knight Inlet in Broughton Archipelago. Click to see it full size and feel free to RT.
Your daily reminder that Minister Loewen has been blatantly lying about all sorts of numbers and 'facts' re the Alberta grizzly bear in his justification of the reintroduction of the hunt. He said on CBC it's 20 problem grizzly bears/yr being killed. Not true, it's THREE.
The Boss vs Split Lip in a battle of Banff's grizzly bear titans. My latest blog post delves into one of the greatest wildlife encounters of my life, enjoy!

A little mental health break from all of this junk on social. A grizzly family in interior British Columbia on a salmon river. Enjoy and feel free to share!
Happy New Year everyone! Here's another one of my unseen (until now) faves from 2021. For most of my remarkable encounter with this mother cougar and her kitten, they ignored me and rarely looked at me (in part because I was careful not to move or make noise & kept my distance).
Incredibly disturbing news this week re West Fraser's imminent plans to clearcut log old-growth/mature forest habitat in the heart of the A La Peche caribou herd's range. This is the EXACT area that the wolf cull takes place in. Without habitat protection, it's all moot.
WHY is the Alberta government allowing THREATENED grizzly bears to be hunted if they are deemed a "problem"?
The Wildlife Act was changed recently WITHOUT public consultation nor legislative review by Minister Todd Loewen.
Our latest EXPOSED with John E. Marriott episode is our most shocking one yet. Very proud of our team for pulling this off on short notice, helping give our wildlife a voice: (here's the link to the full video, with a teaser below)

I'm not sure why I always forget to post images here on Twitter...would seem it should be second-nature for a PHOTOGRAPHER, right? So here's one from this past fall shooting bears with my camera (the only way they should be shot) in BC.

Log Bear again -- this time a close-up angle of him from his first day laying on the log snoozing for ages. Anyone getting tired of Log Bear posts? Cause I've got a lot more...haha!
Need your help, everyone! Which is a better cover for my next book w
@rmbooks
and grizzly bear biologist Sarah Elmeligi, the blue cover with one bear on it OR the grey cover with a mom and cubs? Let me know what you think, please! Thank you!!

When I first began photographing 25 years ago, I never imagined that a day like this would come. Today, I’m extremely proud to announce that I am a co-founder of a brand new wildlife conservation nonprofit, the EXPOSED Wildlife Conservancy! /1
Working on finalizing some details for my Kootenay Wolves book today. Who plans on picking up a copy? Pre-orders will be available starting next week!!

Takaya, the wolf who captivated B.C. residents + a global audience alike, was killed by a trophy hunter in 2020. Cheryl Alexander, a photographer who documented his solitary lifestyle, was shocked to see his image on a trophy hunting website.
Here is a rare glimpse of a spirit bear nursing her cubs. A spirit bear, also known as a Kermode bear, is a subspecies of the American black bear. A spirit bear's white coat is the result of an uncommon recessive genetic trait. (1/3)

Of all the photos I got during that legendary month Searching for Cougars in January, this may be my favourite (though a few of my cougar ones are right up there, too). This is the wolverine I saw on Days 19 and 20 and this is the final scene with it, after four other glorious /1
Spirit, the leading male of the Pipestone wolf family that I followed from 2008-2013. He is still one of my favourite wolves ever, in part because he would occasionally give me moments like this. Photographed from my vehicle with a 500mm and 1.4x teleconverter and cropped 40%.
Do you have a favourite for the cover of my next book on wolves? They're numbered 1-4 in the top right in red, please let me know in the Replies (and feel free to RT if you know lots of wildlife lovers!). Another batch coming next!

The spectacular Spirit, former leader of the Pipestone wolf family with his mate Faith. Merry Christmas everyone, I hope you all have a wonderful and safe holiday season.

Breaking up all this depressing covid news with some pretty pics. A grizzly sow with a fresh-caught sockeye salmon during my fall photo tours in BC two years ago.
Is anyone else out there nervous as heck about Alberta's election? We won't stay in Alberta if the UCP wins...might take us a year or two, but we'll be gone. I just have no desire to see what this province will become with the UCP in charge.

A great week in Nunavik chasing muskox. Photographed this young bull right at the start of the trip (2nd photo of 6,616!) after stalking in close using the boulders on the right and left.
While Log Bear often spent his Mondays lounging around on logs, he spent the rest of the week cruising around the Khutzeymateen estuary rubbing his scent on anything and everything, including this moss-covered tree. At times he looked almost human with his antics. In fact, ../1
Happy International Wolf Day everyone! If you'd like to find out how I photographed this wolf family for three years at this rendezvous spot without getting discovered, check out my book, The Kootenay Wolves.
@MaxWaughPhoto
@LakotaMan1
Yes, this is an incredibly misleading series of photos and it needs to be pointed out that this is not 'great wildlife photography', this is baited photography where the photographer pays to sit in a blind and waits for animals to come in to the buried pig carcasses.
I absolutely hate this bullshit. Gives a terrible impression of wildlife photography. The goal should always be to avoid moments like this at all costs.
Q for those not wearing masks anymore. Why? Using the NHL as an example, at least 2 of 700 of the fittest males on the planet in their 30s have long covid and can't resume their careers, so I'm legit curious: why are you choosing not to wear a mask and/or not take precautions?

Another day, another Loewen lie. The last four human deaths from grizzly bear attacks have NOT been predatory, he needs to stop making stuff up and start listening to his biologists (and it's great to see experts like
@festa_bianchet
weighing in here along with
@ElmeligiSarah
).
The cougar attack in banff weeks ago was NOT a cougar attack. I’ve known this for weeks, but media had their hands tied by parks Canada upper brass. Brutal for the reputation of cougars.
The stunningly, beautiful Amber from Day 1 in Patagonia. We endured some pretty grim weather conditions during this trip, but it almost always ended up being totally worth it in order to get shots like this of pumas in the snow!
The Khutzeymateen never fails to surprise. This year we had a whopping four amazing wolf encounters, which is more than we've ever had on my trips every spring. This gorgeous young female paused to look at us before crossing this small creek.
Happy New Year everyone! I apologize for the lack of posts over the past few months, but 2022 sent me on a bit of a roller coaster, both in terms of losing some dear and personal friends to battles with mental health and with cancer, but also in my own personal life as I've /1
Double the fun! A grizzly bear we called Diver with a magnificent and rare 'double catch' of sockeye salmon during my Chilcotin grizzly bear photo tour in the fall of 2016. Please feel free to Retweet.

Absolutely mind-blowing...zero qualifications required for the 'wildlife management responders' in Alberta that will go kill grizzly bears. Please visit for how you can help.
Here's the call for 'Wildlife management responders' to kill G-bears in Alberta. It asks for name, hunting licence, contact and address. Nothing about experience. Looks like a regular draw hunt.
Canada bans strychnine in a big win for wolves, wildlife, people and companion animals across the country! I'll remember this momentous occasion 4ever.

Canmore town council has rejected the Three Sisters Mountain Village development in a 6-1 vote. It and Smith Creek, a second development, would have nearly doubled the population of the mountain town. It also raised concerns about the wildlife corridor.
