Real grateful for the chance to think a bit about Max Porter’s SHY (@GraywolfPress) and how it furthers the larger project of his work—up today at @LAReviewofBooks:

The "Year in Reading" feature at @The_Millions is, as ever, the best year-end coverage on the internet. Do yourself a favor and spend some time digging into these pieces:

Another day, another horrifying piece of evidence that our country sees no value in human life that has no home. Immediately thought back to @AlbertBurneko's beautifully clear-eyed piece in the wake of Jordan Neely's murder when I heard the news.

How many times can an industry end the jobs of its best people and continue to survive?
After nearly nine years at Esquire, I’ve been laid off from my role as Books and Fiction Editor. I’m looking for a new full-time role where I can use my storytelling skills, in the book world or beyond it. If you know of anything, I’m at adriennewestenfeld@gmail.com. (🧵1/10)

There's a lot to say about the good work Gus has done at the Observer so far, but one thing I'm grateful for (personally and professionally) is how invested he has been in getting books coverage into the magazine, and taking chances on books beyond those getting all the shine.
Further personal/professional news: I am now the Editor-in-Chief of the @TexasObserver. My entire journalism career has taken place here, as I've learned from all who've come & gone from this little magazine. Thank you to all the colleagues & sources who helped me along the way
