I think the reason this game did so well is because they had Ito and Yamaoka working on it. The original monster designer and music composer know this game better than anyone else.
Original Silent Hill 2 artist Masahiro Ito didn't want to remake the survival horror masterpiece, but decided to cooperate to "make sure the core was preserved"

Now that Silent Hill 2 remake was a success I hope they remake more SH games. Silent Hill 2 is my favorite Silent Hill game but I would not have picked that one for a remake as I still really like the original. The one that badly needs a remake is the first game. It aged badly.

@NexGenGuy I actually got these like 6 or 7 years ago. PS2 games were really cheap back then and I snagged a whole bunch of them because I predicted they would skyrocket like this.
