I'm extremely honored by this award, and I choose to take it as a sign of hope that the book award named after Albert Hourani has been awarded to a book about a Jew from Tunis. The Middle East and North Africa is never only what we see on the news today.
The #MESA2023 Albert Hourani Book Award Co-winner is Jessica M. Marglin for “The Shamama Case: Contesting Citizenship across the Modern Mediterranean” (Princeton University Press).

Honored to be in such excellent company; and thank you to Brittany White for such a stimulating interview.
In 1873, Nissim Shamama, a Tunisian Jew born in the Ottoman Empire, died suddenly at his palazzo in Livorno. A decade-long international dispute over his vast inheritance ensued. In 'The Shamama Case', Jessica Marglin investigates nationality on trial 👇

Many thanks to @MomentMagazine for this review of The Shamama Case!
In @JessicaMarglin’s new book, a 19th-century Italian estate lawsuit gives way to a fascinating history and the concepts of citizenship and belonging.
