Jesse Brown. Democratic City-County Councilor, Indianapolis District 13. Proud member of Democratic Socialists of America. The future is worth fighting for.
A Statement Denouncing Political Violence:
I shared this statement with my email list yesterday. By request, sharing it here on Twitter as well.
Friends,
Like many of you, I was disturbed this weekend by the political violence.
Wife is here and brought me an emotional support beverage. Up and walking. I'll have road rash and a bruise for sure but otherwise seem okay, though it's hard to say
@acherolis
IMPD says the license plate number doesn't come back to the car that he was driving, and since I'm not seriously injured they aren't investigating.
@bikevisionary
@acherolis
Bike isn't totalled at all. Did get a police report. I'm hurt but it's all soft tissue on my butt and my elbow got wrenched a bit thanks to my arm being extended to signal a left turn.
@CryptidRespectr
I've learned my lesson. Next time I'm just taking him up on the cash app.
And had I just turned right through the intersection on red, I'd have been fine!
IU encourages and respects free speech, including the right to peacefully protest and demonstrate.
Consistent with university policy, the installation of temporary structures requires advanced approval and camping is not allowed overnight. IU students, faculty, staff and
Drivers are not alright. My wife and I were biking home from a play tonight and someone nearly hit us on the cultural trail in a crosswalk with the light, right at Mass and College.
I pointed to the orange barricades and said "someone died RIGHT THERE. Pay more attention please"
How did we achieve the biggest upset in Indiana politics this cycle?
These three people and the photographer knocked 4300 doors in two months.
You, too, can electorally overthrow your government. It's as difficult, and as easy, as talking to your neighbors.
The SEIU’s $20 wage hike will be a wrecking ball to CA’s restaurant industry. Workers who find themselves with fewer shifts or out of a job entirely can thank the union for yet another harmful policy.

! A champion for public transit that works for working people, housing for all, and unions for all, Jesse is ready to fight for the people of District 13!
So here's my favorite part about this horrific debacle of a tweet.
City employees got a very similar graphic for pedestrian safety a month ago.
I told the city comms department that I found the graphic offensive and that I thought my constituents would, too.
Apparently it's seen as "going rogue" for a Democrat representing this city to fight Republicans when they kill my constituents.
I might be "rogue", but I'm not alone.
@AttyAbdul
If only we had voted and won the popular vote, then Bush and Trump wouldn't have been able to put such right wing ideologues on the bench!
Oh wait...
@EthanHatcher
"gentle density" means "turn into New York City?"
Also, though Indy is my favorite city on Earth, just about everyone else my age and younger I know would prefer to live in NYC if they could afford it. Is that not true among your friends?
The author of SB52 just called mass transit a "19th century solution" because he could summon a car from his pocket.
Working people are using Uber and Lyft today to get to work. It's impoverishing them.
That's the whole reason we voted for bus rapid transit.
The word "trouble" implies breaking some rules, and even some laws.
When slavery was legal, moral people HAD to break the law.
When Jim Crow was legal, moral people HAD to break the law.
When genocide is legal, moral people in fact MUST break the law.
Indianapolis! We just got 325 new ebikes added to the Pacers bike share program. Better yet, Marion County residents can get a FREE annual pass for the bikes.
This was my first ribbon cutting as an elected official, and I couldn't be more proud of my city.
and show some respect so you don't kill somebody."
He answered, "I don't care who the fuck you are, pussy-ass bitch!"
Pretty convincing argument, I have to say!
The driver, a visibly drunk man, responded in the most reasonable way possible: following us in his SUV and screaming obscenities at me and challenging me to fight.
I responded: "I'm a government official over this area. I'm not trying to fight you, I'm just asking you to think
"First-ever socialist city councillor in Indianapolis history!"
But what exactly does that mean?
Socialism means letting the people democratically control both the government and the economy.
Simple enough, right?
I have a question, and I mean it sincerely.
Have police snipers present before a shooting takes place ever prevented a mass shooting or taken down a shooter mid attack?
Or a bomber? Any violent person at all?
I seriously want to know!
@tonykatz
Democracy matters. We put this up to a vote. Your side lost. Now that we're two thirds of the way through the project we voted on, you don't get to just change the rules.
My entire life, I've seen graphs that show productivity going up faster than wages. I'm beyond overjoyed that the UAW is publicly talking about shortening the work week and letting workers start to catch up. The vast wealth of our corporations is squeezed from workers' pockets.
As members of DSA and other socialists serving in public office, we know which side we are on.
@UAW
members, your fight is our fight. Solidarity forever.
The blue line is not a standalone project! It's one piece of a three line project. Wrecking the Blue Line also wrecks the Red and Purple Lines and the entire plan for the city. These were designed to work together.
My friend Bryce is a tireless voice for justice. This is an enormous affront to a free society and a waste of both taxpayer and student resources.
As an IU alumnus, I'm beyond disgusted.
WOW COOL ANOTHER CYCLIST STRUCK RIGHT WHERE MY STATE GOVERNMENT IS STOPPING MY CITY FROM IMPROVING SAFETY!
THAT IS SO FUN AND FINE.
WE MUST ALL BE CIVIL.
Quick update while I am writing a longer form response to last night's incident:
-The person who hit me has been identified.
-IMPD has been very polite and responsive. The responding officer meant well and shared some info that was incorrect.
I was proud to be asked to speak at today's rally for Palestinian liberation and a ceasefire at Monument Circle.
As a pacifist, a socialist, and a humanitarian, I will always stand with those being oppressed and attacked.
@JamesEBriggs
A car-based city simply does not work in 2024 and will continue to cost more than we can pay moving forward. You're assuming that because something exists, it is eternal and intrinsic. Ask constituents if they're satisfied how roads are maintained.
Proud to have spoken at
@DemSocialists
convention on the necessity of holding elected officials accountable. Please bookmark this tweet to call me out when needed. I will stand with the people of District 13.
Capitalists: "we don't need socialism. Just vote with your dollars!"
Me: "okay. I vote not to support any businesses actively working to wreck my city."
Capitalists: "NOT LIKE THAT!!!"
If Indiana is a red state and not a purple one with a voter suppression problem, why is it Republicans are so afraid to let voters make their own decisions?
Honest question, anyone supporting the Republican anti-voter choice stance please try to explain it to me.
Yesterday, my House Democratic colleagues attempted to gauge the views of IN citizens on ballot measures by adding a simple question to our next ballot: "Shall Hoosiers be allowed to initiate a ballot referendum in Indiana?"
❌Republicans voted down the amendment.
Specifically, I was disturbed to see that Israel had bombed a designated safe zone at al-Mawasi, killing 90 and injuring 300 more. Toddlers suffered amputation of limbs, and other children were paralyzed.
I'm incredibly honored to read that one of my local Hoosier heroes wrote an op-ed about me and the movement we are coalescing!
Thank you,
@FranQuigley
!
As I internally braced myself for an attack, the driver said "Hey! I just wanted to apologize. I wasn't paying enough attention and I almost hit you. I'm so sorry! I hope you have a good day and get home safe."
This tiny human moment really made my day.
The whole SB52 argument is so gaslighting.
In 2013 we wanted light rail, which would be the best solution.
Republicans banned it.
Then we went for the next best option, BRT.
Republicans hamstrung it.
Refusing to put that context front and center is extremely misleading.
NEWS: Mayor Brandon Johnson has started a group to explore the possibility of a municipally owned grocery store in Chicago, a city with vast stretches on South and West Side without good shopping options.
Gearing up to fight!
First we defeat SB52, then we defeat Aaron Freeman!
Thanks to
@MayorClif
, the mastermind behind tonight's event, and Futuro Pizza for selling this whole crowd pizza and drinks!
EXCLUSIVE: Honda workers in Indiana are organizing to form the company’s first U.S. union.
Workers say they want to join
@UAW
because people are “injured almost on a daily basis.”
Honda has responded with vicious anti-union attacks. The UAW is filing charges with the NLRB.
When you have a culture of fear and your employees with a manager can't give their honest feedback, the least you could do is listen to feedback from folks who only report to their constituents if you want to be aligned with public opinion!
This is comms 101.
-I'm obviously still traumatized, sore, and upset and that's not any individual or agency's responsibility.
-The solution to these problems does not lie with the police. It lies with safe streets where bikes don't need to share lanes with cars.
Reading through a very interesting book called Socialist Reconstruction, which details some ways we could rebuild society. I feel like
#biketwitter
would be interested in this chapter. I'd love to hear thoughts from our local community about what transportation policy could be!
Online leftists: "Gosh I wish the Left would come up with an alternative to the Trump framing on immigration!"
UAW: "Way ahead of you."
Working people know what's up. I'm here for this brand of leadership.
"Destitute people trying to cross the border to find a better life are not our enemy. They are not taking your jobs. When I see these people, I see my grandparents. Our job as leaders is to eradicate poverty everywhere, that is our challenge.”
This is foolish. If we cut dues share, chapters like mine will simply see members (who have no interaction with national) stop paying dues or give only to the local events and activities they actually see.
And we can't just disregard the most recent convention's vote on leaders.
For months, SMC has argued that we need to approach our budget from the perspective of collective responsibility to DSA, by avoiding enormous cuts to staff that would hurt us all.
Today, we're offering a detailed list of alternatives to mass layoffs:
Quick update here: Dick Lugar is rolling in his grave. The most consistently moderate and rational body in our statehouse just voted on party lines to fuck over visitors, the poor, and democracy, because the Speaker of the House threatened them.
My testimony today on SB52 in front of the Indiana House Roads and Transportation Committee:
Thank you, Chairman Pressel, and members of the committee, for the opportunity to testify today.
I'm incredibly proud to be a sponsor of this resolution.
A task force, including a full time employee whose only job is to push on Vision Zero, allows us to hold the city accountable to our demands.
I will be pushing every day to move faster than the 2035 timeline, as well.
Today, Jockamo's owners went out of their way to give cover for over-the-top supervillain Aaron Freeman to wage war against Irvington, my district, and the city.
I will never again in my life walk in their doors or spend a dime.
Karl Marx was born on this day in 1818. His work helps us not only understand capitalism, but fight for a world free of exploitation and domination. It remains relevant today. 🧵
TODAY:
@WaffleHouse
workers are on STRIKE in Atlanta to demand an end to their mandatory meal deduction policy. Deducting $3 from our pay every shift, regardless of whether we eat, is unjust. We are calling on
@USDOL
to investigate.
#UnionsForAll
Palestine must be free.
Like Nelson Mandela and all the freedom fighters who came before us, we can never stop speaking truth to power.
#CeasefireNow
#FreePalestine
With the progress we're making toward the foundation of our union contracts, there’s never been a better time to organize - and these stores that are going public today prove it.
We're over 460 union stores strong and workers are NOT stopping anytime soon. 🔥 Let's go!!!!
We don't need any compromise with fascists who want to restrict bodily autonomy.
I'm all for compromise on the vast majority of issues.
But MLK couldn't "compromise" with segregationists.
Wrong is wrong, and must be defeated.
Most Hoosiers, even significant amounts of Republicans, oppose the near-total abortion ban. We don’t need more extreme, MAGA politics in our state.
We need more compromise and common sense to do the right thing for Hoosier families.
This.
I had preachers point at me, tell me I'm going to hell, and scream in my face that God hated me and I should die violently.
On campus.
Because I told them that God loved gay people and straight people all the same.
No police or admin reaction!
We’ve had the “God Hates F**S” preachers on our campuses a few times a year for days at a time, screaming for the deaths of Gays and Jews…and you hear nothing about it.
Why is that?
Because while speech can be abhorrent, it is protected speech.
I am horrified by Indiana House Bill 1002.
Anti-semitism is a real problem that should be approached with the seriousness it deserves.
Redefining anti-semitism to include criticism of Israeli policy is a violation of free speech and paradoxically would increase antisemitism.
Reckless driver hurts three people in my district and drives away. The people were apparently standing where they should have been.
THIS is the crime keeping people from being downtown!
Police believe the driver was traveling south on North College Avenue and hit the three pedestrians as they stood on the southwest corner of the intersection.
Good: defying foolish overreach by the statehouse to protect our people.
Better: planning ahead and ensuring our ability to continue doing so using pedestrian safety zones.
BEST: Showing the people of Indianapolis that our politicians have vision and are ready to fight for it!
One important note that I feel is being missed in some online discourse:
I do NOT disrespect the Democratic Caucus.
I do NOT think the strategy of hiding is made in bad faith.
I do NOT want to go alone - politics is all about coalition building and working on a team.
This is one of those articles that Michael Hicks will defend in a decade or two by saying "we didn't know how bad the genocide was back then. It was a different time."
Bookmark this tweet. Hicks is wrong.
@shanghisurprise
Very young Black kid with short but not buzzed hair. I wouldn't be shocked to find out he was under 16. There was at least one other person in the car, can't remember clearly if I saw people in the back seat, was pretty shaken up.
I'm currently a tech bro for my day job. At convention, I stepped up from 50 a month to 1 percent of my income. It makes a massive difference in organizing around the country and I can afford to cut down on personal expenses.
This is unprecedented. Brown University strikes a deal with its students to end their peaceful protest & encampment, in exchange for a formal divestment vote from Israeli interests. And no student will be punished for protesting. This is democracy at work.
Hard to sleep after the electric energy of yesterday. Long-overdue shout-out and thank you to my amazing wife
@thesebadlands
for being my editor, treasurer, therapist, cheerleader, organizer, and life partner. I could never have done this without her in my corner! Thank you baby!
"I won't be bullied" -
@FreemanForIndy
.
So in your bizarro world, going to the media and calling Indianapolis stupid is not bullying. Forcing us to keep puppy mills open is not bullying.
Voting is bullying?
If you feel that way, Senator, it explains much of your behavior.
Thank you to the dozens of people who came out tonight to bear silent witness to our council and demanding a permanent ceasefire resolution. I'll be introducing the resolution for July's meeting and look forward to co-sponsors.
Taking a page from my colleague

to the Statehouse this morning!
There's a lot of legislators across our state who don't seem to want Indianapolis to vote or to set our own policy!
Proud to stand with employees at REI Castleton as they unionize for better working conditions. By advocating for better wages and security, you are advocating not only for yourselves, but for employees throughout Indy.
In case you missed it, the Indiana Supreme Court ruled this week that 81% of Hoosiers are ineligible to run for office as a member of either of the parties with any chance of winning.
Insider rule is bad for 81% of people and worse for democracy.
Moment of positivity!
This morning on 16th Street, a pickup truck almost hit me on my bike. It wasn't that close a call, but the driver clearly hadn't seen me and it might have been bad. At the light, the truck pulled up adjacent to me and the window rolled down.
When you block federal funding and ensure my constituents get hit by cars over and over, I take that personally and I do something about it.
Fuck around and find out.
At 18 years old, I drove by myself across the country, speaking at anarchist bookshops and community spaces about the need to resist I-69, the "NAFTA Superhighway", in my 1988 hatchback Corolla with the abundance of bumper stickers on the back.
You all will be shocked to hear this, but I totally and vehemently disagree with Jefferson Shreve. As a pacifist, I mourn the dead on all sides in this conflict and urge peace now. As a Christian, my faith calls me to stand with the oppressed and poor, and Gaza is both.
Americans must outwardly condemn brutality like what is happening in Israel.
I call on Mayor Hogsett to join me in solidarity in publicly condemning the pro-Hamas rally being called "Day of Resistance" that is planned on Monument Circle Thursday. History has taught us silence or
They also intentionally targeted a family home, killing five people including children. The weapons used in these attacks were paid for with my tax dollars - itself an incredibly disturbing fact.
@angelaganote
@FOX59
I'm praying for the family. But prayers aren't enough. We can redesign our streets and enforce traffic laws, and we are choosing not to. I'm disgusted and enraged.
