Dear Dad, I want you to know that I carry your name on my white coat and introduce myself as “Dr. Millar” so everyone knows whose daughter I am. I wear your favorite football team on my scrub cap so I’m reminded before every case why I chose medicine. 1/

Christmas is my yearly reminder that my family has absolutely no idea what I do as a surgical resident 😅 - “So are you a doctor yet?” (Yes) “Oh really?! For how long?” (4.5 years) - “What’s your schedule like? 3 days on/4 days off?” (No) - “So do you actually do surgery?” (🤷‍♀️)

When asking a med student or resident what specialty (or sub-specialty) they’re thinking of pursuing please DO NOT respond with... - Really? - But you’re too nice! - You don’t want to do that. - Hmm...that’s interesting. - That’s such a hard field!

“I could never do surgery. You all work too hard/too many hours”. Totally fair, and I’m glad you chose a specialty that gives you the flexibility to prioritize what’s most important to you. However, don’t judge MY choices simply because they do not align with YOUR priorities.

Friendly (yearly) reminder: The holidays are some of the loneliest times for residents. Many are 1000s of miles away from family, in unfamiliar cities, & working extremely hard to care for others. Be kind, be understanding & let them know how much you appreciate them. ❤️

Does looking at a monitor like this make your head spin?!? 😵‍💫 Caring for post-op cardiac surgery patients can be challenging. Join @AMWilliamsMD and I as we run you through the basics of cardiac ICU hemodynamics in the latest episode of @BehindTheKnife .

There is no such thing as a “soulmate specialty”. So many students worry about picking the “right specialty” or the “specialty they were born to do”, when in reality we would all probably be happy in a number of different specialties and it’s ok to just pick one of them.

Ok, what’s your unpopular opinion in medicine that will get you in this position?

To all the MS4s: Congrats on reaching such a huge milestone! No matter what your letter says tomorrow be PROUD of all you have accomplished, look FORWARD to the journey that this next stage will bring, and (as always) be KIND to yourself and everyone around you ❤️ #Match2023

Guy on a dating app: “Are you my appendix? Because I gotta feeling in my stomach that makes me want to take you out” Me: “Did you see this new study showing antibiotics to be non-inferior to appendectomy?” Can’t seem to understand why I’m still single 😅

@lilaflavin 5. Don’t bring a purse. Buy a portfolio and put your ID, CC, and keys in it. It’s a lot easier to carry around. 6. Try to explore the city the day before. Mentioning local places is a great conversation starter and shows your really interested in the area.

They say you should follow your dreams. Last night in my dreams I went to @Publix and got a #pubsub . Sadly, this is one dream I don’t think I’ll be following anytime soon 😂 #missingHome #MissingPublix #homesick #Florida #internchronicles

What did I learn: Never be afraid to lean on your team and ask for help. Yes, I wish I had been smarter and known what to do. Someday I will be. Until then I’m thankful to have colleagues who I can run to when my patients and I need them. #internchronicles #surgery #intern

🚨Is there a medical provider on board?🚨 😳🫣😰 Nervous? Be sure to listen to the latest episode of @BehindTheKnife where we chat with Dr. Thomas Doyle, medical director of @STATMDAirline , about what to do & how to help during in-flight medical events

And shout out to the AMAZING hospital staff who so often do make us feel like family around the holidays. I’ve been fed Thanksgiving & Christmas dinner by the SICU nurses, given stockings and candy canes by the OR staff, and invited to so many dinners by my co-residents 🥰

I don’t know what #PreMed needs to hear this but there is NO “one right way” to becoming a doctor. Some of the best physicians I know changed careers, took 3-4 gap years, failed & tried again…No one will care what path you take as long as you learn & grow along the way 🧑‍⚕️💪

@KBrookeGolisch I park an extra half mile away everyday just so I can walk though a common space that often has bunny rabbits hopping around early in the morning 😂 I get so excited when I see them and it’s totally worth the extra five minutes of waking

@lilaflavin 1. Never check luggage. Fit everything into a carry on so you never have to worry about losing your suit. 2. Pack 2 interview suits in case one gets ruined by coffee/food/lipstick/etc. 3. Tide pens. Buy in bulk and always have one with you. 4. Mints (not gum) are your friend.
