My first job was at BYU where the department very explicitly did not require a top 5 for tenure. I think this was extremely helpful for my career. If juniors have a top 5 or bust mentality, they can overinvest in projects that just don't have the potential upside

Excited to see this paper in print--it was started when I was a grad student! This paper changed over time and now discusses the identification of rank effects. Thanks to the referees who pushed us to make this change which I now view as the largest contribution of the paper.

That's why I've tried to get students to file the FAFSA or claim tax credits (without much success). It's why I study financial aid. College has such positive effects on graduates, and often a small amount of money can make a big difference, it would have for Lindsey

It's shocking how a data task that has been on my to do list for a month only takes a couple of uninterrupted hours. The uninterrupted part is key, but given the multifaceted nature of being a prof it's very easy to not have uninterrupted time. Or in other words, Happy Summer!

If you look at BYU basically all of their recentish hires have top 5s now, but they almost never are the person's JMP. This is all to say, I wish we put higher weight on journals outside the top five, bc I think it ultimately results in more high quality research over a career

Her grades suffered from the long hours of work, she experienced a tragedy with one of her friends, and ultimately dropped out after 3 years of college. She went back to school this year and finished her degree earning straight As while taking 18 credits this semester.

Prices increased almost dollar for dollar with new Grad Plus loans. We also show that grants increased by about 1/3 as much as prices, so net price grew by 64%

This is a popular refrain with a lot of people. The market suggests differently, the schools the kids want to go to all have professors who do more research than teaching. I'm not sure why that's the case but it is. I suspect it's about buying prestige but I don't know

Academia would be healthier if more professors were empowered to focus on teaching, rather than producing work they don't care about for journals nobody reads. We are incentivized to prioritize the part of our jobs that matter least, cutting corners on the part that matters most.

So what did we learn? Grad PLUS increased borrowing without increasing access or graduation meaningfully. It also increased prices that students paid for graduate school.

Job market season is stressful for candidates but I have started to really enjoy it. When someone more established releases a paper I usually know what it will look like--job market candidates are more likely to have totally new areas of research.

Plus, you learn to write papers by...writing papers. I'm much better at writing papers now than I was fresh out of grad school. You also develop a reputation as someone who can write competent papers which helps with referees, editors, etc.

Interesting piece today on status in Econ. I do wonder how much of this is ability to pay for econ's relatively high salaries. The difference in salary across the top schools and non top schools is pretty large (and probably larger than in fields where comp is lower)

@kearney_melissa A 2023 JEL paper reviews the effects of medical & recreational marijuana legalization on public health outcomes, including traffic accidents/fatalities. Results are null to negative (bc they lower alcohol-related accidents, which are likely worse).

She did not fill out a FAFSA because no one told her she should or that she would get aid. She would have qualified for a large Pell grant. Instead, she worked 20+ hours a week as a janitor. She was also discouraged from taking a student loan by people around her.

Was talking to a colleague today and this came up so passing along in case folks don't know. You should start a REPEC profile. This collects info on your cites and can result in you being on lists like "most cited economists under 5 years post PhD" etc. Can be helpful @ tenure
