My first job was at BYU where the department very explicitly did not require a top 5 for tenure.
I think this was extremely helpful for my career.
If juniors have a top 5 or bust mentality, they can overinvest in projects that just don't have the potential upside

This is a popular refrain with a lot of people. The market suggests differently, the schools the kids want to go to all have professors who do more research than teaching.
I'm not sure why that's the case but it is. I suspect it's about buying prestige but I don't know
Academia would be healthier if more professors were empowered to focus on teaching, rather than producing work they don't care about for journals nobody reads. We are incentivized to prioritize the part of our jobs that matter least, cutting corners on the part that matters most.
