With excitement and certain trepidation (is it really done?), I sent the final version of my book manuscript to @OxUniPress . The book demonstrates that ethnic minorities act as "Circumstantial Liberals" in politics, conditionally furthering liberalism and democracy.

It is real: the book cover has arrived! Based on Mark Rothko, an American painter, born in Dvinsk/Daugavpils in today's Latvia. A double minority in the Russian empire (Jewish and from a peripheral region). His pictures remind me of the tension between minorities and majorities.

25 years of @ches_data show that European party positions are rather stable on all major dimensions (some movement is lost through aggregation and expert persistence). The striking change - and the story of our time - is the electoral decline of mainstream parties (bottom left)

New Year cleanup — came across my grandpa’s blanket he used to escape from a Nazi labor camp in early 1945. He kept it ever since. It’s torn and dirty, but we will keep on keeping it to remember what human beings are capable of — both, the capture, and the escape! Happy New Year!

This is important for two reasons. 1) Ethnic politics is not just about group particularism, but can produce ideological content of competition. 2) The illustration that ethnic mobilization associates with democratic improvement anywhere is novel, as it should not be the case.

Permanent ethnic minorities are dual minorities – political and cultural. Their interests in maintaining their group distinction can be systematically trumped by the majority. They thus fear the tyranny of the majority, and seek protection from it.

Ethnic minorities provide large, socially rooted electorates seeking rights and liberties. Their representatives cooperate with sympathetic forces, fortifying the liberal pole of politics, which is better able to counterbalance illiberals -- the main source of backsliding.
