Japanese stocks are rallying to heights not seen since the 1990s. Back then it was the aftermath of bubble valuations. Now, there is a solid foundation of earnings growth, corporate governance improvements, and increasing cash returns to shareholders! 1/n

The difference between becoming super rich or broke vs being nicely rich already and nicely more rich or a bit less rich as a result of the bet is these kinds of bets. We mostly only hear about the positive outcomes of the huge bets in the literature. 10% was a big swing. You shouldn’t feel like you undercooked it.

@jakeadelstein @robertwhiting_ Donald Bradman used to hit a golf ball against a corrugated iron (ie: wavy) fence with a cricket wicket (about 1/5 of the width of a baseball bat) for hours a day to hone his hand-eye coordination. The best find new ways to be better.

I know a concentrated fund focused on Japan small caps with solid core businesses. negative or near negative enterprise values, and large roll-up potential. I’m investing in that. Experienced team, difficult to lose money given starting valuations and active engagement, and potentially sizeable upside.

@travislundyasia Thanks Travis. As always you are a font of market knowledge! I had forgotten about ADCs bid. And of course T Boone Pickens’ foray I had read about, but slipped my memory. ADC maybe arguably a financial deal also but relevant nonetheless.

Surely this must be the final salvo in this epic battle? I would have thought similar a couple of months ago though. Japan is changing so quickly, even those of us who harp on about all the change happening are, of late, quite frequently surprised by events!

Still hear people say China isn’t good at “innovating, and where they succeed it’s just bringing cost down and leveraging learning / scale. Nonsense People used to say similar things about Japan. Then Korea. Now China. 1/3

@rich_toad Best lesson from barbarians at the gate IMO is that even the most experienced players are just making it up as they go along
