Repeat:
PIP is NOT an unemployment benefit
Disabled people IN work can claim PIP.
It is there to reflect the inequality disabled face in society
Some facts about
#PIP
1. It is NOT an out-of-work benefit
2. The assessment & application process is hard. It is not "easy to claim"
3. Only 40-45% of claims are successful
4. Getting the correct reward is difficult. Challenging it can take months.
A cursory glance at the 133k total vacancies on the DWP job site this morning suggests 0.5% (700) are 'home-working' or 'work from home' with no office requirements. Less than 100 are part-time.
Where are these magic jobs going to come from?
Just saying “we want less sickness and more work” won’t make it true.
We have to
💷Invest in employment support and improve trust.
✅Recognise some people can’t work. And that is not their fault.
🔧Fix public services to support people properly
The Times again pushing a dangerous narrative on disability benefits.
This time Matthew Parris getting horribly confused about PIP (an extra costs payment NOT an out of work benefit)
Oh right this is a full scale assault from the PM on disabled people.
It's somehow all our fault.
That we're not trying hard enough. That employers are all amazing. And that PIP is too generous?!
Thanks to

@susannareid100

@ShaniDhanda
on to talk disability and cost of living. 3 things Government should do
- Reverse changes to Warm Homes Discount
- Double the £150 disability payment
- Uprate benefits with inflation
'Life costs more when you're disabled. We're already in our own cost of living crisis.'
Up to six million disabled people start receiving £150 this week to help them with rising living costs. But does it go far enough - we speak to Shani Dhanda about how people will manage.
Today the consultation on major changes to PIP launched by the previous Government closes.
Our
@scope
work on the Disability Price Tag has found disabled households would need an additional £975 a month on average to have the same standard of living as non-disabled people.
Last year our
@scope
research found 16% of disabled people have experienced being called a scrounger for accessing benefits, despite deep levels of poverty and income inequality.
This sort of stuff reinforces some lazy stereotypes ⬇️
I think we all want a “grown up conversation about
#PIP
” but on the face of it many of the proposals spoken about today are akin to treating disabled people like children - do this or we’ll take your benefit, here’s a voucher instead of money, provide the receipt.
Good to speak to
@BBCBreakfast
about
@scope
view on the proposed changes to PIP.
Making it harder to claim and replacing cash for vouchers won’t reduce the extra cost of disability. It will show DWP doesn’t think it is their problem and leave people poorer.
Plans to overhaul the disability benefits system could include stopping cash payments and offering claimants one-off grants instead.
James Taylor from disability charity Scope spoke to
#BBCBreakfast
about reforms to personal independence payments (PIP)
'They want to dehumanise and demonise them.'
'You can't even afford a computer.'
As Rishi Sunak launches a work from home bid to get people off sickness benefits, this chronic Lyme disease sufferer explains to @mrjamesob why that isn't as straightforward as it sounds.
Disabled/CEV people having to rely on the personal choices of others and having no control over their own freedom and safety isn’t ‘living with covid’, it’s living with fear.
There are 16 million disabled people in the UK.
But
@scope
polling shows more than half (58%) think politicians don’t care about them.
With the first
#Election
debate tonight, we want candidates to set out how they will create An Equal Future for all disabled people.
Once more for everyone -
People don’t choose to live a life on benefits.
People get sick. People acquire disabilities.
People get let down by a system that reduces them to a number.
Even DWP research from this year found sanctions do nothing.
Today at
#LabourConference
we
@scope
have launched our new Price Tag.
On average, disabled households need an additional £1,010 a month to have the same standard of living as non-disabled household.
It’s shameful that 7m disabled households are in poverty. We
@Scope
know that life costs more if you are disabled. This vital new
@jrf_uk
research demonstrates why a national disability strategy and welfare reform can’t come soon enough
Accessible transport and disabled passenger experience is in a desperate state.
I’ve read the same version of this article every year for the last decade.
It’s the same thing -
DfT won’t do anything
ORR says they can’t do anything
DPTAC ???
Trans equality being used as political point scoring again - haven’t had anything in the economy, cost of living, health, climate - you know, things people care about
#C4LeaderDebate
Today
@scope
we have published the latest Disability Price Tag.
We've found the extra cost of disability is now, on average, £975 per month for disabled households.
Factoring in inflation, the Price Tag of disability rises to £1122.
Yet more evidence that the current Government position on
#PIP
is at total odds with what is actually happening.
PIP is not easy to claim. And it’s not given out to everyone who applies.
NEW: The DWP is rejecting more than 40% of applications for PIP disability benefit from people with multiple sclerosis, cerebral palsy and arthritis – and one in four applications from amputees
By me, for the Observer 👇
Remember
PIP exists because the cost of being disabled in this country is high (average £975 per month). Costs non-disabled don’t face.
PIP is also less generous than DLA (another point the article suggests)
A raft of announcements on
#disability
from
@10DowningStreet
this morning inc. reforms to sick pay, better coordination across Government and making it easier for disabled people to shop around we
@scope
have been calling for these things for a long time
Lots and lots of people sharing what
#PIP
enables them to do today.
The consultation is now live.
Please have your say and tell the Government about it ⬇️
Campaign win 🎴 Prime Minister calls on business to report on disability figures. This is something
@Scope
have campaigned on and called for, for the last 2 years. Of course we want this to be mandatory for all employers so campaigning is not over yet!
Two good appointments to DWP. Both
@Alison_McGovern
and
@stephenctimms
have been good advocates and ambassadors for disabled people during the cost of living crisis and in better employment support
Alison McGovern and Sir Stephen Timms — former chair of the Work and Pensions Committee — appointed Ministers under Liz Kendall at the Department for Work and Pensions
Hi
@thetimes
. One of your columnists, Matthew Parris, writes that PIP is for people “medically unfit to work.” This isn’t remotely true. PIP is a non-means tested benefit to pay for the extra costs of disability. Will your editors correct it? Thanks.
An ACTUAL White Paper! Wow...!
Making sure nobody is excluded from work is an important ambition, important this doesn't forget disabled people. We need to see more voluntary support, & recognition some disabled people are unable to work.
The ONS has just published data on
#COVID19
deaths and disability. Sadly, mortality rates amongst disabled people are twice as high as those who are not disabled and the gap is even higher between younger age groups
We
@scope
found the Disability Price Tag has risen by over £300 in the last few years.
Today
@resfoundation
finds 4 in 10 PIP claimants are in the lowest income group.
Attempts to 'cut the welfare bill' will have devastating consequences on the individuals who make use of it
'We want to know where the £12billion comes from so we know how you will pay for your tax cuts'
@edballs
questions Work and Pensions Secretary, Mel Stride
This will make a reall difference to many disabled people who might find travelling difficult. It also irons out a lot of regional inconsistencies about who can apply
So proud of the awesome
@scope
team this week (well every week really). To conceive and launch a campaign in 4 days on a vitally important issue and secure some great coverage to boot
#WontBeForgotten
We support thousands and thousands of disabled people every year access benefits, understand the assessment process and find employment if they can. Many are accessing benefits because their income is insufficient.
Not one of them is choosing benefits as a “lifestyle choice”
We’ve had a tough few years. But Britain is resilient. And our plan is working.
🆙 Real wages up 10 months in a row
📈 The fastest growth in the G7 since January
💥 The most radical welfare reforms in a generation
Stick with the
@Conservatives
plan, don’t let Labour wreck it
Among the poorest fifth of households, disabled households allocate almost as twice of their expenditure on energy bills than non-disabled people. A price of 54% will be catastrophic without immediate Government support
#pricecap
And it continues...
"If you don’t do this, we will look at sanctions"
ONS data earlier found disabled workers reported similar levels of homeworking to others.
Where are these magic home-working jobs we're supposed to looking for going to come from?
If only the Government had just introduced BSL interpretation in press conferences from the get go like other nations did, they wouldn’t have ended up being seen as pulling apart someone’s disability in a court room
She goes on to describe Katie's evidence as "incomplete" and "exaggerated" in relation to her ability to understand written English.

Welcome news that the
@10DowningStreet
National Disability Strategy is a priority for Government. We
@scope
believe this a vital opportunity to address the barriers disabled people face
Many disabled, older and ‘vulnerable’ groups are still struggling to access food. More coordination from Government, easy to understand information and opening up more delivery slots is vital

@WhichUK
Great to welcome

hub in Leeds today. They met with disabled people who have used our employment services and got to discuss devolved employment support, concerns around benefits and the role of employers in closing the Employment Gap
Life already costs more for disabled people.
Now the cost of charging a wheelchair or using a breathing machine will have almost trebled in a year.
The government must intervene now.
This morning
@Scope
publish new research that highlights just how few disabled people feel safe going back into the workplace. Just 14% of disabled people feel safe about going back to work and many worried about losing their job.
It’s my birthday tomorrow and to celebrate I’ll be on 5live Wake Up to Money at 5.20am talking all things cost of living, disability and new

Proud that

@DWP
Corporate Reporting Framework. Our first report provides information on the wellbeing of our staff and the experiences of disabled colleagues
Today we
@scope
publish research on attitudes towards disability. Speaking to 4,000 disabled people we found:
➡️3 in 4 disabled people have experienced negative attitudes
➡️44% said they feel less equal to others
➡️25% accused of faking their condition
New
@scope
research out today found 1 in 5 disabled people had their work from home request denied putting people in an impossible position of keeping their job or keeping safe
Our latest

data from our helpline has found
1 in 3 disabled people are in energy debt over £1000
Many have had to switch medical equipment off to save money
Which is why we’ve partnered with

to launch a new campaign today ⬇️
Ending a busy week with a meeting at Number 10.
Pushing for

call to introduce a energy social tariff to support disabled households
Reducing the disability employment gap
Improving disabled people’s engagement with government policy making
Welfare is not 'lifestyle' choice.
Supporting people who are long-term sick or disability financially, removing the threat of sanctions, and investing in public services is a choice.
Think today the Government is making the wrong choice.
Paying disabled people less ultimately means disabled people are valued less. Yes we need to get more disabled people into work, but lower pay is not the answer
Today sees the launch of the
@RailOmbudsman
who will be able to deal with complaints about passenger assistance and discrimination. Good news as

research earlier this year found 40% of disabled people have experienced difficulties when travelling by train

Good to be able to share our
@scope
view on the Government’s Back To Work plan at DWP Committee y’day.
I said…
1. Sanctions are not the way to tackle unemployment or inactivity
2. Investment in disability employment programmes is small compared to size of prize …
We
@scope
have joined with
@jrf_uk
and over 60 other charities to call for more support for struggling households this winter. Disabled families are being hit hard by the rising cost of living and current measures won’t touch the sides
NEW: The impact of the cost-of-living crisis on low-income families is the gravest issue our country faces.
