Am proud to say that I did not go to Peterborough today. Am ashamed of my colleagues who did, putting political tribalism ahead of standing up for the UK's Jewish community.
Lisa Forbes is not fit to be an MP.
I imagine it's an unpopular opinion but the fetishisation of "the membership" - a group which could hardly be less representative of the general public - as the final arbiter of right and wrong has to be one of the biggest mistakes the Labour Party has made in recent years.
Kids are now safely playing on roads in Lee Green where last week thousands of vehicles sped past each day bringing noise and pollution.
This is what Low Traffic Neighbourhoods are all about.
I'm currently at the Lee Green crossroads to have a look at the massive traffic jams several residents have reported to me as having been caused by the introduction of the Lewisham & Lee Green Low Traffic Neighbourhood.
Relentlessly attacking Chuka for joining the Lib Dem’s and suggesting that makes him a bad person is obviously a fantastic strategy to win back the millions of previous Labour Voters who voted Lib Dem last month and anyone who says otherwise is a Blairite plotter.
Just caught the owner of this vehicle vandalising a modal filter.
When I got my phone out he started to shout obscenities and abuse at me. Might have got nastier but his shouting drew witnesses and he sped off. Unsurprising that the vehicle doesn't have a MOT and isn't taxed.
If you live in a private estate with gates to stop commuters driving through you probably shouldn't be demanding the removal of LTN's.
I've yet to have an email from a resident of the Heathlee or Cator estates demanding *their* LTN's go.
Just the ones they don't live in.
I'm sick and tired of seeing people suggesting that the solution to Labour's problem is some kind of "compromise" with the electorate.
That's not how democracy works.
No one owes us their vote. We rid ourselves of the conspiratorial lunacy that repulsed people or it's all over.
The far right isn't welcome in Lewisham! Our wonderful community has rallied to protect the Honor Oak Pub and show the fascists that we stand together.
Love will always triumph over hate!
Shocking behaviour in Lee Green today, with numerous drivers going over pavements to avoid modal filters.
This is dangerous and illegal. On a couple of occasions I saw vans nearly run over pedestrians in the process of making their journey just a little bit quicker.
It is the duty of every driver to know the highway code and to obey the law. I've not got much sympathy for the people who have been ignoring the bus & emergency service gates and will now be asking the Council to waive their fines as they "didn't realise" what the signs meant.
Upwood Road this morning.
This is dangerous, illegal and incredibly selfish. Cutting five minutes off your commute does not justify risking other people's lives.
Someone is going to get seriously injured if drivers don't stop doing this.

The Lewisham & Lee Green
#LTN
covers a square mile and is home to nearly 20,000 people. Stretching from central Lewisham to the South Circular it contains eight schools, three parks, two libraries, four housing estates and has direct access to three stations.
This is the junction of Leahurst Road and Longhurst Road in the centre of Lee Green. It’s a 180 metres away from a primary school.
It’s the road which the ABD and One Lewisham are campaigning to put even more traffic on to make the South Circular quieter.
Massive thanks to Daren & Grant from
@MetCycleCops
plus Danny from
@FMConwayltd
who installed the bollards! Looking forward to a healthy and safe Upwood Road from now on!
Not that long ago this was all parking spaces. Now it's somewhere friends & family can gather and enjoy a little bit of festive cheer.
#LTN
's & parklets make neighbourhoods better places.
Over the next twenty years car usage in London needs to be halved. The only way that will happen is if we radically redesign our streets to prioritise public transport, walking and cycling.
Change is painful and difficult. It is also necessary.
Local Councillors are elected to provide municipal services, not debate foreign policy. Anyone who wants to spend council tax payers time & money on symbolic motions about events in other countries we have no control over should focus on improving local services instead.
Lots of anger from London Labour councillors. Hearing complaints that London region are ruling Gaza ceasefire motions out of order and refusing to allow discussion.
Mohammad Ayas Miah has become first Tower Hamlets Labour Councillor to resign over the issue, joining 51 others.
Those who disagree with us are not bad people. The left has no monopoly on morality.
Telling people who are sceptical about your policies that anyone who disagrees with you is evil is a fantastic way to lose votes.
Unless the Labour Party offers the British people something they want to vote for they can and will go somewhere else.
The sanctimonious, self-absorbed, self-righteous idiocy that claims anyone voting for someone else is a bad person or a idiot is the root of our problems.
It's fantastic to see
@TfL
announce the next phase of streetscape improvements in Lewisham.
Changes to the A21 to make it safer for pedestrians & cyclists will help transform the borough & reduce peoples dependence on cars. More announcements from
@LewishamCouncil
to come soon!
Dermody Road at 5pm on Tuesday the 1st of September 2020.
Lewisham Council has now added giant "NO ENTRY" markings on the road.
Some people still don't seem to feel like obeying the law though.
This is what we are up against and why
#LowTrafficNeighbourhoods
are necessary.
People did not vote for the Conservatives because they like poverty and food banks.
They voted for them because the conservatives had a coherent idea of the future that made sense to them whilst we were spouting left wing shiboleths and making unbelievable promises.
I’d really really like a Labour government at some point, which is why I’m a huge fan of our strategy of persuading people to vote for us by screaming in their faces that they’re terrible people and closet Tories.
If I look back over issues that Labour members have raised with me over the last two years and compare it to what the residents in my ward have contacted me about there is almost no overlap.
People are right to angry that there is so much congestion on their streets but it’s been a growing problem for the last decade.
The problem isn’t the traffic reduction measures.
The problem is the traffic.
Without traffic reduction the number of vehicle miles will only rise.
In Lewisham we were already planning for another £40 million of cuts over four years BEFORE rising fuel costs increased our bills by £12 million, pay inflation was £4.5 million more than expected & the Tories crashed the economy.
But apparently we have fat to be trimmed? Where?
Very proud to have brought a motion to
@LewishamCouncil
calling for the adoption of
@TheIHRA
defintion without any caveats - it’s a small act, but incredibly important.
At a time when the Jewish community rightly mistrusts our party
@lewishamlabour
stands with them.
Over the last 40 years car ownership in the UK has doubled. London's population is set to grow by one and a half million people over two decades. Roads are already congested and overwhelmed by traffic, and have been getting worse each year.
The status quo is unsustainable.
Lewisham Labour spent a decade campaigning for step free access at Hither Green Station and after Network Rail committed funding last year the Council has now granted approval. This will be transformative for so many people in Lee Green & Hither Green who have mobility problems.
Burnt Ash Road filmed outside Lee Station at 5pm on Monday 13th of July.
Despite many angry people insisting otherwise there is no sign of
#Carmagedon
.
Low Traffic Neighbourhoods work.
None of these drivers can claim they didn't see the signs or the cameras. They just find obeying the law inconvenient and don't care about the people who's neighbourhoods they drive through.
#LowTrafficNeighbourhoods
There’s nothing questionable at all about a report exonerating Jennie Formby, Milne, Murphy and Murray of any fault for Labour becoming institutionally antisemitic having been produced by a team overseen by Jennie Formby and with evidence provided by Milne, Murphy & Murray.
EXC: Leaked Labour report on antisemitism was commissioned by Jennie Formby and she managed a handful of Labour staffers who wrote it.
Report was given to Keir Starmer last week before it was leaked and he was told lawyers were advising against submission
Just had a late lunch from Hither Green Cafe in the pedestrianised section of Staplehurst Road. I’ll never understand why anyone ever thought a row of empty parked cars was a good use of space here. Let’s fill it with plants, tables and people instead.
The Lewisham and Lee Green LTN isn’t perfect. No traffic reduction scheme ever will be. But giving up entirely on the idea that we can control traffic and turning residential streets into overflow lanes for the South Circular is madness.
Fantastic speech at Lewisham East GC by
@JanetDaby
about how we must do everything we can to root out antisemitism and calling for the CLP to affiliate with
@JewishLabour
- applause all round!
Fantastic to see Lewisham Momentum and assorted members of the TUSC & SWP campaigning against a Labour Council building new social housing.
I imagine they all have warm homes to sleep in tonight, but far too many people in Lewisham don't.
Extremely successful Catford Against Social Cleansing (
@CatfordStruggle
) stall today which was joined by Lewisham Momentum and GLA candidate Shahina Jaffer (
@VoteShahina
) in Catford Central!
Traffic congestion outside Central London is well above historic levels, and in September was regularly at 150% or more than in 2019. The primary road network is overwhelmed, and Lewisham Council and TfL will be taking urgent action to reduce pressure on the South Circualr.
This needs fixing ASAP.
Over the last decade
@googlemaps
and other GPS providers have directed more and more traffic down residential streets. They won't stop doing it so the only solution is to close of roads and create
#LowTrafficNeighbourhoods
.
I'm truly honoured to have been reselected for this evening in my home ward of Lee Green alongside the fantastic Eva Kestner & Ese Erheriene! I know they are both going to be brilliant Councillors and will dedicate themselves to serving our community.
Apparently an elected politician expressing their views & telling people what they think is against the Nolan principles.
I've been accused of some pretty absurd things over the last year but this one has to win an award.
#JanetDaby4MP
is the only candidate who will campaign to remain in the single market and customs union - in an area where 70%+ voted to remain!
#LewishamEast
members and voters need a local MP who will represent their views in parliament - and that's
@JanetDaby
!
Also, telling everyone who has ever voted Lib Dem that they are personally responsible for austerity and every bad thing that has happened in the last decade is really part of a cunning plan to use negging to make them want to vote for us.
@MartinSLewis
It very much depends on the politics. Economic policy is much smaller issue for me than social issues, where I could never be friends with someone who oppossed (for example) equal marriage. The first is an area of legitimate dispute, the latter a matter of human rights.
The junction of Leahurst Road and Ennersdale Road filmed at 3.15pm on Tuesday the 14th of July.
Thousands of vehicles used to come down this road every day.
This street is now safe for pedestrians, families and children.
#LowTrafficNeighbourhood
's work.
“Policy should come from the people, not be imposed on them.”
Lewisham was holding engagement events, co-design sessions and public meetings about the Lewisham & Lee Green LTN from early 2019.
“No one was asked” is the foundational myth of the campaign against it. It’s a lie.
@martin_mckee
Thanks Martin for publicising our campaign, even if you haven't understood that policy should come from the people, not be imposed upon them. We are in favour of school streets.
I’m incredibly proud to have been appointed as Lewisham’s Mental Health Champion by our new mayor
@DamienEgan
.
A quarter of the population experiences mental health problems each year, but only one in eight adults with a mental health problem are currently receiving treatment.
I’m all for LTN’s personally. I just find it strange how I’ve been getting so many emails recently from people who live in two private LTN’s next to the Lewisham & Lee Green LTN demanding it be removed but not suggesting that they will also be doing the same....
It's a massive honour to have been elected for another four years by the people of Lee Green alongside the brilliant Ese Erheriene and Eva Kestner.
I have lived in Lee Green my entire life and I'm privileged to be able to serve our community.
Wandsworth Council responded to the vocal demands of an angry minority and removed the Tooting
#LTN
. This was the result.
Low Traffic Neighbourhoods aren’t the problem.
Unsustainable levels of car usage is the problem.
For fans of 'Slow TV' here's the Mellison Rd / Trevelyan Rd in
#Tooting
this afternoon
This is a route motorists use to avoid the A24 and Tooting Broadway junction
This isn't caused by the CS7 cycle lane, it's just back to normal now the LTN is gone
If anyone has ideas to reduce traffic volumes I’d love to hear them, but over the last ten weeks no one oppossed to
#LTN
’s has come close to persuading me that they have a realistic plan.
Ignoring the problem and hoping car usage goes down all by itself won’t work.
Great to be out today with
@leweast4europe
campaigning for a
#PeoplesVote
!
I remember being told we'd have £350 million a week for the NHS - not rationing of medicine and imaginary ferries... no one voted for what we're being offered!
Powerful speech by

reception setting out Labour’s uncompromising & unshakable commitment to supporting the people of Ukraine in their fight against tyranny.

I was also down in Chislehurst recently and came across this private gated LTN. Does anyone know if the Chislehurst based “Lewisham Freedom For Drivers” group has been campaigning for it to be removed?
@ColinChester
@MakeLeeGreen
We need to stick with it and get the LTN right, including expanding it and adding more filters if we have to.
The alternative is to live with ever rising volumes of traffic on residential streets for the next twenty years.
@josephkazUK
@cycleoptic
We've had someone breaking the locks on a couple of bollards, lowering the bollards, and locking them down on a daily basis. Some local residents have been reparing & relocking them and had ID'd the vehicle as a dark BMW. First time we've got the registration number.
I’m delighted to be asked by
@Keir_Starmer
to serve in a new role as Shadow Minister for Faiths, with the brilliant
@LabourCLG
team led by
@SteveReedMP
.
I’m honoured to be given the chance to be
@UKLabour
’s voice on this crucial brief.
Congratulations to
@aabdu02
on his election as Young Mayor of Lewisham!
Great speeches by
@JanetDaby
&
@damienegan
- Lewisham has some fantastic young people, and it's brilliant how engaged and informed they are.
Four fantastic members of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra (
@rpoonline
) held a wonderful concert for their neighbours on Carston Close this evening!
Thank you so very much to Dave & Benn for organising this! We really do have a brilliant community in Lewisham.
#SaveTheArtsUK
A very wet Sunday spent canvassing in Rochester and Strood with a great bunch of people from Lewisham, London and the South East!
We're going to turn Medway Council red on May 4th!
It’s
#TimetoTalk2019
and I’ve been trying to come up with something uplifting and educational to share.
But I can’t.
I feel like crap.
I missed work the last two days because of how bad I felt, and I barely managed to get out of bed today.
I’m not okay. And that’s okay.
Every single person who voted against legally mandated rule changes to prevent institutionalised antisemitic racism, abuse & discrimination should be expelled.
Organisations which instructed people to do so should be proscribed.
Lee Green isn't the most deprived area in Lewisham but 1/4 of residents live in Council & Social housing.
Listening to social media you'd think everyone here lives in mansions.
I guess it just don't fit the narrative of rich vs poor some people want to create about the LTN.
@DavidHirsh
@emmacpicken
The silence about the 850,000 Jewish refugees who were forced from their homes in the wider Middle East, but found refuge in Israel, really sums up this issue for me.
Low Traffic Neighbourhoods transform areas for the better by restricting through traffic and prioritising pedestrians & cyclists over drivers. We're trialling the boroughs first LTN in Lewisham and Lee Green right now but it's fantastic to see people campaigning for more!
If you are in the Lewisham area (esp. SE6 and SE13) - Please support our petition for a
#lowtrafficneighbourhood
- Hither Green Lane and surrounding roads are now very dangerous.
It may not be "sexy" but I'm quite happy as an old fashioned Social Democrat.
I get that gradual reform is a bit dull, but Social Democrats have achieved more progress than anyone else in the last century and we did it all without labour camps, show trials or death squads.
Fifteen years ago I was a student at my local primary school... now people are voting for me there.
Most absurd day of my life - but also the proudest.
#VoteLabour
According to the well funded campaign being run from Chislehurst by the ABD the LTN makes main roads busier to create leafy, quiet streets for the well off.
Does this look like a leafy, quiet street to you?
Great to be out this morning with
@LeeGreenLabour
knocking on doors and talking to residents on Lee High Road. Massive thanks to
@LukeVWarner
from Blackheath for coming down the hill to lend a hand.
The Lewisham & Lee Green
#LTN
isn't perfect. Over the coming months Lewisham Council will be carrying out more consultation and working with stakeholders to improve it, including looking at similar & complimentary measures in other areas.
Anyone who thinks the roads in Lee Green are safe and don't need traffic reduction measures should have a word with the driver who tried to run me over two and half hours ago.
If you saw a white Suzuki Carry on Leahurst or Longhurst road around 3.20pm please let me know.
This is just round the corner on Eastdown Park. This is what we are trying to stop.
No one can possibly tell me that this level of traffic is sustainable or suitable.
If you don’t agree with that, fair enough. You are entitled to hold that view and campaign and vote accordingly - in a democracy you don’t have to think the same thing that I do.
But I don’t have to think the same thing that you do. Someone disagreeing with you isn’t corruption.
Fantastic to run into the new NEC Chair
@JohannaBaxter
& the first black man elected to the NEC
@AbdiDuale_
whilst out with my brilliant MP
@JanetDaby
.
Abdi has been a friend since he volunteered on Janet's selection campaign in 2018 and he's a honorary member of the CLP.
One of our key election commitments in 2018 was to support active travel and reduce through traffic on residential roads. On that basis we started working with local residents to develop a LTN scheme in 2019.
There was an election last year and this "very small mob" was elected by the people of Lewisham to represent every part of our wonderful borough.
I don't think the far right weirdos on social media know very much about South East London.
@DavidHirsh
@emmacpicken
The difference is that Israel welcomed and provided for Jewish refugees, whilst it’s Arab neighbours repressed and rejected the 711,000 Palestianian refugees.
It's fantastic to see work on the redesigned junction of Leahurst Road and Ennersdale Road has begun! With widened pavements and two new crossings it will be safer for pedestrians, drivers and cyclists!
The scale of the
#LabourAntisemitism
crisis is huge and the viciousness of the hatred is sickening. It is not a case of a few bad apples.
The Jewish community believes that we have become an institutionally antisemitic party.
It’s about time we took their concerns seriously.
Long-Bailey’s stated position on this is actually perfectly reasonable, but by excusing herself to this antisemite rather than having him expelled from her meeting she reveals how little she actually means what she says.
