In the last 24 hours, the number of Awami League-affiliated detainees has risen to 1,651 (1,308 + 343) following the destruction of the museum dedicated to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s life and his role in shaping South Asian history and geography.
Mass Arbitrary Arrests and Detention Alert 2: Over 1,600 Arrested in Last 48 Hours. The Interim Govt in #Bangladesh launched the "Operation Devil Hunt" two days back with the stated aim of arresting Awami League leaders, activists, and supporters. In the last 24 hours, 343 more people have been arrested. News🔽 In the previous 24 hours, 1,308 people were arrested from across the country. News🔽 This takes the total number of political activists and supporters arrested in the last 48 hours to 1,651. This excludes the thousands already detained in the last six months. By arresting thousands of people without any specific allegation simply for their political beliefs, the Dr. #Yunus-led Interim Govt is acting in clear contravention of the Constitution of Bangladesh and multiple #humanrights treaties that the country is a signatory to. To the Interim Govt of Bangladesh: The unconstitutional, anti-human rights, and anti-democracy, so-called "Operation Devil Hunt" must cease immediately and the over 1,600 people arbitrarily detained must be released unconditionally. This is what #HasnatAbdullah, the chief henchman of the Yunus-led Interim Govt (principal coordinator of violent mobs) posted recently in Facebook. You don't need to be an expert in #Bangladesh politics to deduce who Hasnat is referring to here: #AwamiLeague-associated people. The quote has been borrowed from a #journalist turned functionary of the Yunus Govt, Golam Mortoza, recently appointed as the Press Councilor of Bangladesh Embassy in Washington DC. He made the remark in a recent talk-show on how the IG and SAD/JNK should treat their political opponents. Alarming levels of dehumanising on part of the IG-SAD-JNK clique against the AL on display. It would not be far-fetched to even term these comments "genocidal dog-whistles". But then again, this dehumanising has been ongoing for six months now. There is an unofficial rule in Bangladesh now- anyone even remotely linked to the AL has to be identified as "fascist" or "associate of fascists". When that is not followed to the letter, even press come under attack (like Dr. Yunus' Press Secretary's recent rant against BBC). The dehumanising efforts serve a more practical purpose for the IG-SAD-JNK people. It legitimises #AwamiLeague associated people being subjected to arbitrary mass arrests and detention, having their homes and businesses burnt down or razed to the grounds, lynched by mobs, or killed in law enforcement custody. In Bangladesh, the so-called anti fascists are giving the clearest demonstration of how fascism should properly be done.
