Star cricketer and former leader of #AwamiLeague's student wing hacked to death in Gaibandha: Death-toll of AL-associated people killed since Aug 2024 rises to at least 124. The latest victim, 20 y/o Abdullah Al Mamun Mondol, was repeatedly hacked by a gang of miscreants on Thursday at his village in Khamarpara in Gaibandha. He was a net fast bowler for #BPL team @SylhetStrikers and a former joint-sec of Dhaperhat Union of Sadullapur Upazila. Enraged at the killing of such a promising young man, the locals blockaded the Dhaka-Rangpur highway for hours demanding accountability. News🔽 Mamun's death takes the total number of AL-associated people killed since Aug 4, 2024 to at least 124. This is what happens when genocidal rhetoric targeting a specific political group is pumped out incessantly on an industrial scale, often from the Interim Govt itself. For instance, according to the Interim Govt's Home Adviser's infinite wisdom, a "devil" died in Gaibandha today. The same devils being subjected to arbitrary mass arrests and detentions in their thousands under an ongoing operation that he is overseeing. …. #BangladeshCrisis @amnesty #AllEyesOnBangladesh @hrw @BBCWorld @AgnesCallard @TiranaHassan @HRF @amnestysasia @StateDRL @DRL_AS @ESandersFCDO @AP @FCDOHumanRights @guardian @RFKHumanRights @kajakallas @AFP @eu_eeas @EURightsAgency @HumanRightsCtte @SecRubio @State_SCA @MEAIndia @WSJ @DrSJaishankar @DavidLammy @FCDOGovUK @GERonSouthAsia @fidh_en @forum_asia @omctorg @FreefromTorture @Ginitastar @volker_turk @cnni @dwnews @UNHumanRights @OHCHRAsia @IHRF_English @UN_HRC @AJIunit @TheDavidBergman @MujMash @JonathanEmont @HannahEP @anbarasanethi @Sabir59 @schipperlena @bbcbangla

#Bangladesh: Mass Arbitrary Arrests and Detention Alert 5: Over 3,400 Arrested in 5 Days. The Interim Govt in #Bangladesh launched the "Operation Devil Hunt" four days back with the stated aim of arresting Awami League leaders, activists, and supporters. See🔽 In the last 24 hours, 566 more activists and supporters of the party have been arrested from various districts of 🇧🇩 by law enforcement and security forces. News🔽 This takes the total number of Awami League-associated people arrested in the last 5 days to 3,415. This excludes the thousands who are already in jail having been arrested in the last six months. By arresting thousands of people without any specific allegation simply for their political beliefs, the Dr. #Yunus-led Interim Govt is acting in clear contravention of the Constitution of Bangladesh and multiple #humanrights treaties the country is a signatory to. The operation has already been criticised by the Human Rights Watch (HRW)🔽 To the Interim Govt of Bangladesh: The unconstitutional, anti-rights, and anti-democracy, so-called "Operation Devil Hunt" must cease and the over 3,400 people arbitrarily detained must be released immediately and unconditionally. Human Rights Watch criticises the Interim Govt's mass-arrests of AL activists and supporters under "Operation Devil Hunt". In their latest statement, the @hrw urged the #Bangladesh Interim Govt led by Dr. #Yunus to ensure that security forces "act with neutrality and respect the rule of law to prosecute political violence". Despite promising security sector reforms, the Interim Govt "has deployed security forces, including the military, for Operation Devil Hunt, arresting nearly 2,000 people, mostly supporters of Hasina’s deposed Awami League govt." HRW added that the authorities "should not repeat mistakes of the past and should instead ensure impartial rule of law". The rights body reminded the Interim Govt that the "right to peaceful assembly and protest, even by supporters of the former govt, is a fundamental right protected under int'l law". Using the resistance of locals to vandalism and arson by the #SAD backed-mobs as a pretext, the Operation Devil Hunt was put in place by the Interim Govt for targeting "groups linked to the fallen autocratic regime", describing them as "devils". HRW comments, "All crimes, incl. mob violence, should be punished, but when authority figures characterize opponents as the ‘devil,’ it can fuel abuses by security forces that have never faced accountability.” Statement🔽 ..... #BangladeshCrisis #HumanRights @amnestysasia @AgnesCallard @amnesty @TiranaHassan @HRF @volker_turk @UNHumanRights @Ginitastar @RFKHumanRights @StateDRL @FCDOHumanRights @DRL_AS @ESandersFCDO @IHRF_English @HumanRightsCtte @EURightsAgency @fidh_en @forum_asia @OsloFF @UN_HRC

Chief Coordinator of the Students Against Discrimination (SAD) Movement and star organiser of violent mobs, Hasnat Abdullah today wrote: "Either we will exist. Or Awami League". And endorsed the following msg. written by another SAD activist: "We want revenge for Mirror House today. Today, our cries transforms into slogans of fire. The monster named Awami League must be burnt in that fire". If the recent nationwide violence against historic structures and properties of AL-associated people was any indication, this statement from Hasnat must be taken literally. Which means a fresh round of violent persecution of Awami League-associated people may be imminent. After all, it was Hasnat who flagged off the last series of mob violence against the Awami League. With full protection of the Yunus Govt of course. #YunusYouths #BangladeshCrisis

Even mothers with small children aren't being spared under the ongoing "Operation Devil Hunt" of the Yunus Govt: But then again, when you call your political rivals "devil", a policy of "no humanity" applies automatically. The arrestee, Sumona Akhter, is a former Chhatra League leader, who is a lawyer in training. When #YunusYouths Graduate To #Gestappo. The images are screenshots from a “spectacle” livestreamed last night by #Kalbela: #SAD activists and police “searched” the residence of former AL MP Sukumar Ghosh for alleged “illegal wealth”. No such "wealth" was found, but the entire house was ransacked. There was no search warrant for this illegal operation. But then again, Students Against Discrimination (SAD) Movement is above the law in 'new' Bangladesh. SAD's role in the destruction of the #Bangabandhu Museum and attacks on hundreds of properties and historic structures last week clearly established that. The fact that they took the #media with them to live-stream an illegal action also shows how brazen the #Yunus Youths have become due to the impunity they enjoy from the Interim Govt for their crimes. The SAD activists present in the “search” revealed they received an anonymous tip online, following which they came with the police. But after vigorously searching through every nook and cranny and turning the house upside down, they left finding nothing. An aged Sukumar Ghosh has been bed-ridden for a while now due to long-term health issues. Only his wife, Ava Rani Ghosh, lives with him. Given the abuse of the words “fascist” and “fascism” these days in Bangladesh, we are refraining from using the terms. But its hard not to notice the parallels between what's happening in Bangladesh in 2025 with what happened in, for instance, Germany or Italy in 1935. #BangladeshCrisis #Mobocracy

#Bangladesh: Mass Arbitrary Arrests and Detention Alert 3 Over 2,200 Arrested in Last 72 Hours. The Interim Govt in #Bangladesh launched the "Operation Devil Hunt" three days back with the stated aim of arresting Awami League leaders, activists, and supporters. News🔽 In the first two days, 1,651 people affiliated with the AL and its associate bodies were arrested from various districts. We talked about the significance of #AwamiLeague backed lawyers winning multiple bar association elections after Aug 2024 and its political significance. See🔽 As if to emphasise how significant, today #BNP lawyers assaulted @albd1971 lawyers when they tried to collect forms for the upcoming #Patuakhali bar elections (see video). Two things need to be noted here: 1. Any #election which excludes a significant #constituency does not result in a representative body, whether in bar or national polls; 2. The #Yunus-led Govt's inaction towards, and tolerance of, the repeated assaults on lawyers and accused in court premises has resulted in a climate of fear in the legal fraternity which makes the administration of #justice, at the very least, extremely difficult. #BangladeshCrisis #Mobocracy
The Political Significance of the Recent Bar #Elections in #Bangladesh Since the Dr. Yunus-led Interim Govt took over in Aug 2024, the only elections in #Bangladesh which can offer some insights into contemporary political trends has been the recent #bar association elections in various districts. In these elections, the Awami League has, to the surprise of many, shown strong popularity. This is despite the fact that @albd1971-supporting lawyers across the country continue to face physical assaults, persecution, and marginalisation by prosecutors and lawyers backed by the Students Against Discrimination (SAD) Movement, #BNP, and #JamaatEIslami. In fact, the AL backed lawyers contested these bar elections without any official “panel” for the first time, fearing reprisals. Some of the recent successes: - In Brahmanbaria, the AL-backed lawyers won 9 out of 15 positions, including the important secretary post. - In Madaripur, except the position of the President, the AL-backed lawyers won 14 out of 15 positions. - In Sylhet, the AL-backed lawyers won 12 positions, including both President and Secretary. In fact, fearful of the showing by Awami League supporting lawyers in the recent bar elections, the Students Against Discrimination (SAD) Movement, has demanded that the AL-backed lawyers be barred from contesting the #Chattogram Bar Association election scheduled for Feb 10. See: In Bangladesh’s political history, the bar elections have always been harbingers of national directions and moods. The strong performance of Awami League lawyers across the country demonstrates that, despite the completely one-sided and hostile narratives being faced by the party amidst a total mainstream media ban on their voices, they can still organise, fight elections, and win. Is this another reason why the Interim Govt of Dr. Yunus, which is now sponsoring the formation of a political party via the #SAD Movement and Jatiyo Nagorik Committee, is so hell-bent on keeping the Awami League out of the political processes and elections? #BangladeshCrisis #Lawyers #AllEyesOnBangladesh #Politics #BarAssociationElections

The Interim Govt in #Bangladesh reiterates that the ongoing so-called “Operation Devil Hunt” is aimed at eliminating the #AwamiLeague. Home Adviser Jahangir Alam Chowdhury today stated: “Although Awami League has left. Their associates are still conspiring against the state…After the ongoing operation is over, there will be no more ‘devils’ left”. The Operation Devil Hunt, which has the stated objective of “eliminating the @albd1971”, has resulted in the arrests of over 1,600 activists and supporters of the AL so far. This would need to be updated soon as we receive news of more arrests. The Home Adviser also said something which puts to rest the suspicions many had regarding the politics of denying bails to accused with political affiliations. He said: “The concerned authorities must give special attention to the fact that those arrested do not make bail and try to destabilise the country”. It is clear that the Interim Govt. led by Dr. #Yunus is not only conducting an operation which violates multiple constitutional and human rights of the AL supporters and activists, but also interfering with the courts’ capacity to dispense justice. #Islamists today attacked Dhaka's main annual book fair "Ekushe Boi Mela" and vandalised the stall of a publisher for displaying a book by Taslim Nasreen, an exiled secular and feminist Bangladeshi writer. "If you are defeated in war, you are dead; and if you win, then you have to destroy your enemies." This is what #HasnatAbdullah, the chief henchman of the Yunus-led Interim Govt (principal coordinator of violent mobs) posted recently in Facebook. You don't need to be an expert in #Bangladesh politics to deduce who Hasnat is referring to here: #AwamiLeague-associated people. The quote has been borrowed from a #journalist turned functionary of the Yunus Govt, Golam Mortoza, recently appointed as the Press Councilor of Bangladesh Embassy in Washington DC. He made the remark in a recent talk-show on how the IG and SAD/JNK should treat their political opponents. Alarming levels of dehumanising on part of the IG-SAD-JNK clique against the AL on display. It would not be far-fetched to even term these comments "genocidal dog-whistles". But then again, this dehumanising has been ongoing for six months now. There is an unofficial rule in Bangladesh now- anyone even remotely linked to the AL has to be identified as "fascist" or "associate of fascists". When that is not followed to the letter, even press come under attack (like Dr. Yunus' Press Secretary's recent rant against BBC). The dehumanising efforts serve a more practical purpose for the IG-SAD-JNK people. It legitimises #AwamiLeague associated people being subjected to arbitrary mass arrests and detention, having their homes and businesses burnt down or razed to the grounds, lynched by mobs, or killed in law enforcement custody. In Bangladesh, the so-called anti fascists are giving the clearest demonstration of how fascism should properly be done. "Doing Fascism Right" - could be the title of Dr. Yunus' memoirs. .... #BangladeshCrisis #Mobocracy #Lawlessness #JungleRule #BangladeshOnTheBrink @AFP #YunusDoingFascismRight @LemkinInstitute @UNOSAPG @volker_turk @GenocideWatch1 @StateDRL @FCDOHumanRights @UNHumanRights @forum_asia @fidh_en @RFKHumanRights @AP @EURightsAgency @amnestysasia @hrw @IHRF_English @Ginitastar @paulocasaca1 @CJBdingo25 @rayhanrashid @icsforum @HRF

Deaths in joint forces’ or police #custody, or #mob killings: How extrajudicial killings are continuing in #Bangladesh after #SheikhHasina: @bbcbangla report. Six months after the Dr. #Yunus-led Interim Govt took charge, extrajudicial killings including deaths in custody continue to take place with some regularity. The such latest victim of custodial #torture and death is political activist Touhidul Islam, whose brother narrated his ordeal thus: “…not finding any weapons, they took my brother with him…From that moment till he breathed his last, he was beaten continuously… he screamed for his father, begged them not to hit him anymore, but the torture did not stop…” In 2024: - a total of 21 people were victims of custodial deaths, of which 12 deaths took place between Sep and Dec 2024. - a total of 128 people were victims of mob lynchings, of which 96 took place between Aug and Dec 2024. Human rights activists want to see accountability each of these incidents, irrespective of the political identities of the victims. They question such incidents occurring with such regularity under a govt which has formed a commission to investigate killings and disappearances. HRD Elina Khan also highlighted to BBC that there should be similar accountability for the police killed during the July-Aug protests, including the 15 police officials beaten to death on 4 Aug, 2024 at Sirajganj’s Enayetpur. The disturbing trend of Awami League affiliated people dying in custody continues: Another party leader dies in jail. Akhter Shikdar died last evening in Khulna District Jail. He was the joint gen-sec of the party's unit in Modhupur Union of Terkhada Upazila. Jail authorities cited "stroke" as probable cause of death, as has become custom by now. News🔽 Akhter's death takes the total no. of people associated with AL to die in custody in the last 6 months to at least 11. Half of the deceased died under similar circumstances as Akhter in jail. Others died during joint forces' raids or during interrogation. For those who died in jail, some of the families alleged finding signs of torture; while most families alleged denial of proper medical care. This is a disturbing trend, made more so by the fact that neither the Interim Govt of Dr. #Yunus has investigated any of these deaths, nor do they allow the families to file cases in these incidents. Notice also the dishonesty of the Interim Govt on full display. It says it has no power to stop thousands of wholesale murder cases filed against hundreds of thousands of AL-related named and unnamed accused. Cases that we now know for a fact are full of contradictions, used for political revenge-taking, and shaking down innocent people. Yet, it seems to have full power to stop any cases being filed when it comes to AL-related people being subjected to custodial torture and deaths, extra-judicial killings, mob lynchings, assassinations and so on. …. #BangladeshCrisis @amnesty #AllEyesOnBangladesh @hr @BBCWorld @AgnesCallard @TiranaHassan @HRF @amnestysasia @StateDRL @DRL_AS @ESandersFCDO @AP @FCDOHumanRights @guardian @RFKHumanRights @kajakallas @AFP @eu_eeas @EURightsAgency @HumanRightsCtte @SecRubio @State_SCA @MEAIndia @WSJ @DrSJaishankar @DavidLammy @FCDOGovUK @GERonSouthAsia @fidh_en @forum_asia @omctorg @FreefromTorture @Ginitastar @volker_turk @cnni @dwnews @UNHumanRights @OHCHRAsia @IHRF_English @UN_HRC @AJIunit @TheDavidBergman @MujMash @JonathanEmont @HannahEP

Yunus Govt’s “Operation Devil Hunt” is a good example of how dangerously unaccountable installed, unelected regimes can be. One of the main headlines in today’s @dailystarnews is titled, “6 months of interim govt: Citizens still in fear for safety”. And why are citizens feeling unsafe in #Bangladesh? Because crimes rates, across the board, have sharply risen. Muggings, robberies, dacoities, burglaries, and murders are all on the rise. Capital #Dhaka has become a city of criminals, with many no-go areas after dark. See: And yet, what is the law enforcement priority of Dr. #Yunus? To go after his political rival #AwamiLeague of course. In fact, the Home Secretary today specifically addressed the issue, in case there was any confusion. The ongoing ‘Operation Devil Hunt’ is targeted at those who “are trying to destabilise the country” (a code for political targets) and not “criminals, extortionists, etc”. See: At a time, when finite LE resources should have been used to tackle rising crimes, emboldened criminals, and restore sense of security (virtually absent in the last six months) among the people, the Interim Govt is using its resources, including the armed forces, border guards, police, RAB etc. on conducting a special drive across the country with the stated aim of repressing one’s political opponents.
