Jules Verne was born on this day in 1828. Today he is best remembered for JOURNEY TO THE CENTER OF THE EARTH, TWENTY THOUSAND LEAGUES UNDER THE SEA, and AROUND THE WORLD IN EIGHTY DAYS. When faced with the prospect of following his father into the practice of law or answering his calling, he wrote, "Am I not right to follow my own instincts? It's because I know who I am that I realize what I can be one day." In his summation of Jules Verne’s influence on novelists the world over, Ray Bradbury declared, "We are all, in one way or another, the children of Jules Verne."

Did you know? In the 1960s, a bizarre experimental firearm was being tested in the jungles of Vietnam by MACV-SOG operators—a classified unit running some of the most dangerous missions of the war. The weapon? The Gyrojet, a futuristic rocket-firing pistol that looked like something straight out of a spy film… because it was. While U.S. special operations forces were quietly evaluating its effectiveness in Southeast Asia, the Gyrojet made its Hollywood debut in YOU ONLY LIVE TWICE (1967) as one of James Bond’s cutting-edge gadgets. A firearm that fired miniature rockets instead of bullets—promising no recoil and armor-penetrating capabilities—seemed like the next evolution of warfare. But in the real world, it didn’t quite live up to the hype. The rockets were slow to ignite, accuracy was an issue, and conventional firearms proved far more effective. While Gyrojet pistols were tested by SOG, no authenticated use cases have been identified. The Gyrojet quickly faded into obscurity, becoming one of the strangest footnotes in firearms history. A secret weapon of MACV-SOG and a Bond gadget at the same time—truth is always stranger than fiction. More deep dives into Vietnam-era history coming soon in advance of CRY HAVOC: A TOM REECE THRILLER. Stay tuned.
