Strongly recommend this piece on taking pleasure seriously in public health work around alcohol. Lots to discuss - what works in alcohol policy debate, whether/how we can incorporate pleasure into public health research, and why previous work on pleasure hasn't gained traction.
New ‘For debate’ paper in Addiction, in which we ask whether alcohol research should take pleasure more seriously.

@VictimOfMaths @wtb_Michael Presumably it was originally called the brownish black not obviously glossy cockatoo, but people got lazy over the years

@KeithNHumphreys Yes, in that vein, it's striking that for all the historical trends presenting problems for right-wing parties, they seem to keep winning by overriding those trends. The Tories worry about the age gap in voters, but Farage was reportedly doing well with young men (like Trump)

@KeithNHumphreys Does this get discussed as a 'Shy Republican' effect akin to the 'Shy Tory' effect in the UK?

@KevinPascoe @georgeeaton Steel and glass palaces attract international students, which universities rely on in the absence of sufficient domestic fees income.

@raymasseytweets @georgeeaton COVID was a mess in universities as elsewhere. But the strikes were part of the same problem as fees. If you artificially strangle income, staff get persistent below-inflation pay deals and cuts to their pension. Unsurprisingly they go on strike.

@raymasseytweets @georgeeaton There are good reasons not to let universities go bust (e.g. impact on students midway through degrees), but more importantly, we should give universities a fighting chance by not strangling their income while their costs spiral due to inflation.

@DrRJSimpson ...people who already had advanced liver disease. So there are strong suggestions from that evidence that it might have affected people with dependence. We just haven't found the right way to look at that directly yet.

@drcpennington Sorry, I'm not sure. It's a few years since I looked at the actual dataset but there's nothing in our papers that suggests it's a large proportion. Would be good to know though if you get a chance to check before I do.
