Advert for Paramedics, paying £52,000pa for work through a private company awarded a contract to provide 999 response for an NHS ambulance trust… almost 20k extra for a paramedic on the start of Band 6 in the NHS - and we wonder why we have staff retention issues?
Not going to lie, pretty bloody chuffed with this 😬 I’ll be sad to leave
@YorkshireHart
after 5 years - especially my team, but what an exciting new adventure helping to lead our Critical Care team into the future as an Advanced Paramedic in Critical Care
Exciting times, absolutely thrilled to begin a secondment as the Area Clinical Lead in South Yorkshire. An amazing opportunity to lead, support and develop clinical practice back where my career began. Lots of work ahead! 🚑
Really really pleased to have been successful in getting one of the new HART Critical Care Paramedic roles at
@YorkshireHart
- really exciting rotational role with a higher education pathway to boot! Months of pressure over now and the real work begins 😬
Probably my most rewarding shift since qualifying as a

When we teach thoracostomy, we warn students about creating ‘funnels’ with their incision, where the outside is bigger than the inside - making the procedure less effective and more prone to becoming occluded. A student inadvertently gave me a good example to share with you (1/2)
Something a little different today, refresher training in moving critically unwell patients with high consequence infectious diseases!

Pretty cool 2022 to reflect on:

🟢 Started flying a Drone
🟢 Earned a Masters degree
🟢 Retired from the Military
🟢 Lots of opportunities to teach and support others
Let’s see what 2023 has for me.

Busy week teaching our Critical Care Foundation Course - a Modular course staff that have a enhanced scope of practice (HART/HEMS/CCP) undertake at relative to their scope of practice. This ensures consistency across teams in the way that these skills and therapies are delivered
What a thing to find in my email just now, absolutely buzzing that my MSc has been ratified and I’ve (somehow) managed a distinction! I left school with one GCSE so I never thought I’d have a degree let alone a Masters one day! What a journey 👨🎓
Hands on with our new corpuls mechanical CPR device today which replaces our Autopulse. An excellent piece of kit that will be available on all of our
#UKHART
response vehicles and our critical care car!
#TeamYAS

Absolutely love this team, got on station this morning, bit of a Q start and lots of crews on station but mess room suspiciously empty. Out to the garage and one of my
#CriticalCare
colleagues has turned a DCA into a classroom and is running Paed sims with staff in the back💪
Annnd sleep, end of a busy week. ED support, MERIT (Dr Car) shift, a few Case reviews, a governance day and ending with a Critical Care shift this evening (obviously copped for a late off job!). Weekend of assignment writing to look forward to now 👀

Working on our critical care car today, busy one so far! Also experienced hail, torrential downpour and then sunburn on my head all before midday … and tomorrow is June 👀
Vehicle checked and out responding today covering Sheffield and Rotherham critical care. Lots and lots of office/project work the last few weeks so it’s nice to get out for some fresh air! We’ve got HART and SPCC jobs out right now in
#TeamYAS
- why not check them out?
Officially de-kitted from
@YorkshireHart
today - what an adventure and privilege the last 5 yrs has been, taking Paramedic care to patients in the most challenging of places. I've made some incredible friends along the way, it'll be great to collaborate clinically into the future
Another week, another mass casualty response course and exercise delivered for our HART and Specialist Paramedic Critical Care staff! 3 more to go. Absolutely love seeing colleagues rise to these challenges and push themselves to do more for our patients 💪
@PhilDrummer64
After 2 days of exams, physical competency assessments, swimming, crawling under things, climbing up and down things and a thorough interview... I got the job! I’m off to

✅ Critical Care/Police Co-responding for 🔥 night
Couple of days off then back in Uni then teaching work colleagues 😴

#Yorkshire
. A mix of dedicated RRV and HART dual responding - plenty of challenging incidents but as ever I’m blown away by the decisive skills, decision making and compassion demonstrated by my YAS colleagues in difficult circumstances
Weekend nights are a wrap! Had the pleasure of facilitating a clinical contact shift with one of our HART paramedics last night, some really interesting discussions and reflection with a mix of critical care jobs. 🛏️ now!
It isn’t cheating! I’ve had hands on these in my own practice, couldn’t recommend them more! Check lists and prompts provide structure and anchorage in stressful circumstances, widening your bandwidth and getting you back in flow. Highly recommend!
Officially dined out from the

Naomi and I joined YAS together and worked in Sheffield together, so so so proud to be able to give her these today 😬 welcome to both of you - great to see you grafting on the Cas Collection Point with some tricky patients (not sorry!) 👀
Congratulations to our newest HART Paramedics Chris and Naomi on successfully qualifying today, earning your new epaulettes and officially joining

Last shift with the mighty Delta team tonight, we spend upwards of 40-50 hours a week with each other - often more than my family so it’s always sad to move on. From next week it’s taking up the Critical Care role in Charlie team, new challenges await !
Got married, caught covid (not a pleasant experience!), now back at work. Supernumerary today so it’s on one of our RRVs providing extended clinical support to our A&E Ops colleagues over the county! Foggy start so far, drive safe!

@IanKilgour5
- the day began with personal airway drills & delivering a clinical education session to todays live HART staff
Really varied week as I enter the last couple of months of my secondment. Organising CPD, developing practice guidelines, meetings and responding to critical care incidents around everything else. Taken loads away from the experience as I get ready to go back to my team at HART!
Busy week teaching the latest
@YAA_HEMS
clinicians, the first cohort of staff to be put through our new centralised Critical Care Foundation Course. A long 4 weeks ahead for them but what an awesome and motivated team they are 💪
Annual leave is over, Operational on one of our critical care cars today. Thanks
@TheResusRoom
for some morning standby

today. Really looking forward to this one 💪
Super proud of
@MidoriOtoko1
- one of our HART Paramedics has worked months to get a Methylene Blue PGD off the ground and tonight was his ‘Train The Trainer’ session with HART Critical Care Paras to roll out across the wider unit before being carried on vehicles. Incredible work
End of a busy course! Happy to see a new cohort of clinicians within HART successfully pass their extended clinical care course. We invite external clinicians from outside the unit to assess our staff on their final exercise which meant I had opportunity for a little photography

tonight. One of the big strengths of my role is the integration with the trusts wider critical care team, same role, just different departments! We train together, attend all the same governance days and are supervised in the same way!
Dear 27 year old me: Spend the most of your assignment time planning your assignment, structuring your arguments and ideas with bullet points and finding their references and the assignment pretty much writes itself in a third of the time. Love, 35 year old me. 😂

Nervous but absolutely honoured to be invited - I’ll be talking about Critical Care in Hazardous Environments and explaining how the first Critical Care Paramedics in a UK HART Team function and govern themselves to be credible specialist clinicians and HART operatives.

Another day, another ‘check lists ain’t cheating’ post. Here new HART staff trouble shoot a ventilator using emergency action cards following a pre-hospital anaesthetic delivered by one of our Doctors.
Another week of teaching our newest HART staff their extended clinical skills course. Following this they’ll spend months building a portfolio of evidence with clinical supervision for sign off to use these new skills
Independently. Looking forward to being back on the road now!
Today I’ve spent the day staffing our Critical Care desk, our function here is to identify and interrogate high acuity and complex patients that will benefit the most from our regions Critical Care specialists.

😴 After weeks of teaching it’s great to get back to responding to jobs, very busy weekend of nights at an end with a challenging but varied workload. Met lots of crews for the first time and as ever I’m blown away by the skill and compassion displayed under drastic pressures
Ambulance overtime shift tomorrow, pressures aside I’m looking forward to being able to sit down with some patients and talk to them/solve an issue or two. Critical Care is a huge privilege but being able to converse and solve less acute problems sometimes is good for the mind…
One of the current

If you were 21, just qualified and wanted to get your finances in order - maybe even a deposit together I’d imagine the longer term benefits wouldn’t fuss you too much!
Taking this baby out for her first ever operational shift tonight, 95 miles and still have the floor protectors on! I’m like a big kid.
@YorksAmbulance
@OHVCUK

Absolutely the hardest part about an assignment/project - getting started! Breaking it down into chunks helps me, 10% of the assignment word count a day as a min (often ends up being more than this once in flow) - shout out to everyone else looking at a blank word doc right now!
Slightly different shift than usual tonight, currently covering our Critical Care Desk, identifying appropriate calls for our specialist resources and providing critical care advice to our crews!
#TeamYAS
#Paramedic
Busy night last night working in A&E Ops again, lots of Newly Qualified Paramedics taking their first steps into practice - really privileged to meet and support a few last night across some challenging incidents. Worth remembering what being new felt like!
