‘Australia….will send RAAF E-7A Wedgetail aircraft – to Europe for six months to help protect key wartime logistics hubs’. Positive step deploying this C2/ISR capability so long as it does not come at the expense of ISR support to the Indo-Pacific.
The Phillippines is being singled out here to test resolve of the US, but also by implication its allies. Australia needs to be clear on what its national interests are & how it is prepared to respond 2/
This is very much about testing the new web of relationships in the region that are designed to deter China’s increased aggression. The response will matter for more than just how things evolve in the West Philippine sea 4/4

A highly implausible scenario - detaching a ship’s helicopter to go & observe a PLA naval exercise. Absolutely no benefit to Aus, and would be a significant change in Aus’ policy that has avoided provocation, as evidenced by Aus policy of not undertaking FONOPs.
China's Ministry of Defence gives new account of Yellow Sea confrontation between a Chinese fighter jet and Australian helicopter: MoD spox claims the Aus helicopter was conducting "close-in reconnaissance" of Chinese training exercises rather than enforcing UN sanctions
