A bunch of celebrations today in the V-lab! Thanks to new funding, there are a bunch of promotions for crew 🥳 A few science wins! An award! A fond Farewell and few Welcomes, all rolled into a boisterous cheer-a-thon! A thread 🧵🧵
I remember breaking down to my Ph.D. advisor about how stupid I felt while troubleshooting a problem in my project when she handed me this paper. Years later it is still relevant to young students starting off in Science. It's ok to feel stupid, we all do on a regular basis.
My dad left us 7 years ago today. He quit his work & moved abroad when my PhD got tough, stayed with me in the early years of my postdoc..held me steady when the world 🌎 wanted me to get “settled”(IYKYK). I wish you could see me now appa, the lab is for you and coz of you ❤️
Don’t wait to learn programming to start analyzing your genomics datasets. There are plenty of graphical user interface tools that require 0 programming knowledge. Every student deserves to experience that aha moment and the joy of discovery 😀! Here are some of my fav tools- 🧵
Indian students,pls avoid words like - grateful, thankful, much obliged, etc, in your SOP. You are valuable to the univ/program; it's not charity. Make your case for why you are qualified and address fit, but avoid framing it like it's a favor from their end, because it's not.
If you use antibodies in your experiments, gather around. Give

a go and thank me later. AI- powered, it’s plug and play. Fill in keywords, it does the hard work of scouring thru lit to rank best Abs sorted by papers. Here are top features, a thread 🧵
At a time when most dads were asking their daughters to get married, mine asked me to work on my paper and focus on getting a grant! He added so much wind to my back but left us before he saw me soar. Appa, you’re missed everyday. The lab is for you, because of you 🙏🏻

After living on my to-do list for 1.5 years, I can finally check it off - our lab handbook is ready! What is it? Why is it important for every lab to have one? Read this paper for a quick primer and a 🧵 follows
Shout out to my husband V, on our wedding anniversary! I met him 2 weeks after I lost my dad, at my lowest ever. I was close to quitting science and moving back. He added oxygen and stabilized me till I found myself again, and then, now and forever, he is, therefore I am.
My fav new year tradition is to kick off the year with custom diaries for all students with a new year message from me acknowledging their wins from the previous year and charting goals for the coming year ☺️ I hope it brings them as much joy reading it as I have penning it!
After a fun and productive 2 day lab retreat, finally got some time to gather thoughts and reflect. Here’s what we did in case you’re considering it / curious. A long thread 🧵
8 years ago on this day, in the same Starbucks as in the pic, I met my now husband, then bioinformatician for a coffee to discuss a project! We spoke some science, but lots more and I found a friend that day! He’s still my friend first and all else next! Pic taken on our wedding
Father’s Day is v tough for fatherless folks like me. But I take solace in knowing that I had the best one while he was on Earth- he quit his job and followed me to the US to support me during my PhD and Venkatesh lab was, is and will forever be for and because of him 🙏🏻
Last week, our lab turned two (hence the formal portrait :D) ! 2 years ago, I was a new transplant to the Indian System. I left after my Bachelors and came back 14 years later to launch our lab. I have learned A LOT in the last 2 years and wanted to share some thoughts in case
Our lab turned two and as the tradition goes, we headed off to a 1 week lab retreat 😁 The crew has had a splendid year, we got 3 extramural grants, 2 poster awards, 1 scicomm award and importantly, enough cool 😎 science to feed 8 invited talks! so it’s only fair we decompress
Dr. M.S.Swaminathan is the reason I’m in science today! His foundation conducted a 3 mo research workshop for X grade students, where we traveled around diff facilities in TN and gained hands-on research exposure - all for free! Eternally grateful 🙏🏻

Over 50% of students polled that they have had no form of training whatsoever in research poster design. A vacuum, considering poster presentations are a key part of sci-comm in their careers. Supported by our outreach grant from
@IndiaBioscience
, we are offering a FREE virtual
The final numbers are in (406 total responses). 58% - no form of training whatsoever in poster design. 23% - some training & 19% - been trained adequately. If you are interested in an online poster design workshop, pls respond. Date and time - TBD.
So excited that
@AnishaSumith
joined the lab today as our second PhD student 🥳 🤩 🎉! Anisha will be spearheading the 3D genome and epigenetic regulation projects! Welcome aboard anisha!
Ok major Fangirl moment! Look guys, I heard the talk on how Cadherins were discovered from the man himself - Prof.Takeichi
@InSDB_79
!! I had to take a pic with him coz if this doesn’t give me eternal bragging rights, I don’t know what does 🤷🏻♀️🤩
In 2021, I moved back from the US without a job lined up because it was the peak of COVID and hiring was the last priority everywhere. The crippling uncertainty and fears are still fresh in my mind. So, I am so grateful to see any team at all, let alone a steadily growing one
Today I received approval for a grant, our first for the lab and while I'm thrilled, what made my day was something else. Lab alum and current crew put together a 4-minute video message for Teacher's Day with individual wishes from everyone and I'm not crying 😭, you are! Thank
After 14 LONG YEARS (vanvas of sorts!), I get to spend Diwali 🪔 with my mom ❤️❤️ this year! The non-stop filter coffee ☕️, the loving meals (Aviyal!!) , even lights seem brighter ✨✨this time around!

Memories from my own committee meetings feel like it was just the other day, meanwhile, my 1st PhD student
@Yogeshsahu2030
rocked his first DAC meeting today 🙃🙃🙃 He still has a long way to go but every small win needs to be celebrated!!

Onwards and upwards Yogesh!!
I have a list of lab time fillers pinned up on my desk. It’s a list of tasks to do when I hit a block with thinking/writing but still want to stay productive. Today shared this with a friend and thought of sharing here as well. What do you to stay afloat when you’ve hit a block?
Took a break this week to reconnect with family and finally found some time to pick up the brushes again and tried a Madhubani painting of Ma Durga

As a girl who grew up in apartments all my life, I still can’t get over the fact that we have trees in our front yard and backyard and they are laden with mangoes 🥭 so summer sucks with its heat, but hey mangoes defray the heat costs!

📝 It's grad school letters season! Giving reco letters is a serious commitment, and I enjoy doing my bit to help our former and current crew land exciting opportunities! But it takes significant effort, which students seldom realize. When you ask for a letter, do come prepared!
Happy to announce our recent selection as Associate Fellows of the Indian Academy of Sciences
@IAScBng
!! Looking forward to being an active member of the academy and networking with other fellows. As always big thanks to
@ccmb_csir
for the support!
Today I sat down with my students to go over the Eisenhower Decision matrix for efficiency in lab work. I'm knowledge transferring what has worked for me when it comes to juggling N number of tasks at any given time. Template and more below. A thread/

A fav hobby of mine is to bring back some flowers or leaves from campuses I visit to press and make bookmarks! Now I have an endless supply of bookmarks plus it’s a souvenir that I spend nothing on! This is from what I collected from

Our lab

🌟Awardees🌟 for 3rd IndiaBioscience Outreach Grants
#IOG
has been declared!! Congratulations, we eagerly await the outreach efforts.
We thank everyone who applied. Keep up your passion for science outreach.
In 2023, I didn't read as many papers as I planned. Fixing that in 2024. Inspired by
@Annika_Barber
's
#365papers
, I have started my own list. Goal: Paper/day organized as below +gdoc notes to go with it. Accountability: Share paper+notes on the lab slack channel by EOD
Lessons to my younger self: Never feel bad/apologize for your pace, intensity, work ethic or passion. " Better to lose them than lose yourself". Getting this framed, need this to survive in academia 😁
It’s such a joy to see your crew soar!
@Shringika
, our newest postdoc, beaming with her first purchase from her OWN fellowship funds! And it’s well deserved because she shot off 6 proposals before she landed this one!
#keephustling
I get asked often why (incl. backhanded compliments) we share our lab life on Twitter. There are a 1000 reasons but my fav? A tangible effect is that students feel more comfortable writing to me/approaching me in person at meetings to discuss science. If you don't recognize why
Got a mini projector (fits in my palm) for my office and now we can stream seminars , discuss data and practice talks without straining our eyes or leaving the lab!We watched the
@IOSCIRS
seminar today and paused and discussed along the way. Why didn’t I think of this earlier?!!
Another art form that’s very relaxing is Zentangle - drawing those intricate patterns really keeps you focused and at zen and I find this a form of meditation. Latest one that I made as a birthday 🎁 for my husband who patiently listens while I chirp away every evening 😂

, one of my fav activities is to brainstorm new ideas with students. To break the ice and get us going, we have found the "Babble and Prune" strategy effective. What is it and why does it seem to work in combining creativity+productivity? Read on if you're curious.
The past year I've realized it takes a village to raise and sustain a lab and sooo many hands have come together to help us do our science! This year, the students and I took some time to write thank you notes to everyone who helped and hand-delivered the notes and sweets! Diwali
Part self-inflicted & part outside of my control, had a monstrous march - 3 grants, student DAC and seminars, whipping up papers for submission etc. and I was frayed at the edges! Decided to do NOTHING this weekend except make art and listen to music and I already feel human 😄
Highly recommend mandala art to unwind over the weekends. The patience it takes to dot evenly becomes meditative and really takes out all other thoughts! 💭 (including checking phone for new data from lab 😉)
We all know the pain of scientific disappointment and the power of continued perseverance+ course-correction. Which is why we will be proudly cheering
@isro
today in our lab watch party as they launch 🚀 Chandrayan-3! Take a few mins outta your day to cheer our scientists!
Super THRILLED to welcome two new members to the lab today!

It’s PhD rotation season! Here’s some wisdom- (1) you have 5 years to learn a new topic, go with what excites you rather than what you’ve been trained in/exposed to. don’t be afraid to explore new territory! If not now then when? A thread 🧵
Rarely has a movie made me cry, laugh, cheer, root for, learn, clap, smile, all at once.. I don’t think I’ll watch anything for a while because nothing can match up to this. Nothing. Watch and thank me later .

As we take stock of non-science related lab purchases to bin hits vs misses the past year, here are few clear winners in case you are looking for inspiration ✨ a thread 🧵

“Exposing your imperfections, connecting with students on a deeper level, and creating space for them—and you— to grow will always be challenging, but it is worth it.” Word. Compassionate mentorship is the key to a happy, productive crew.
In a rarity on Sundays, I woke up early to give a Plenary talk at the Bioanveshna 2024 conference
@slsuohyd
on our recent work! It was worth it because as always the post-talk interactions with the students was much fun, they were buzzing with questions 🙋🏻♀️ and ideas 💡
On world pani Puri day, we bid farwell (hopefully temporarily) to our stellar dissertee

After my talk at the CMMDR2024 conference, had many students like the one below from
@ShivNadarUniv
come by to say that they enjoyed my talk because “it made them feel smart”, aka they understood the science! This is why I tell my students - Less data + more background+context
When I had my whirlwind month- my mom showed up to support me sans expectations. Bringing coffee in odd hours as I slogged, packing my fav dishes for lunch, and just being there for 🫂s. Just like she did when I wrapped up my postdoc and PhD. Support systems are EVERYTHING.
Final painting of my self-imposed break - Balaji for my lil bro’ (IYKYK). Goodbye brushes for a while and hello 👋🏻 to my laptop and iPad that’s feeling ignored for the past week 😂 emails, grants here I come (back).
This month was crazy and I spent more time at work than home. To make it up to my mom who’s visiting, I cooked and threw her a feast of her favorites! It’s hard being an academic’s mom, given the uncertainty at all career levels but she is my rock 🪨 throughout.
#grateful
What a day we had!
@VigyanShaala
invited me to talk to 800+ young girls in STEM to share my academic journey and I took my

from lab to both celebrate them and have them
Inspire the younger gen! The future of science is shining bright and how!!!🤩
Support staff are EVERYTHING. Venkat bhaiya was assigned to help us out a year ago and he’s become indispensable for the lab’s operations! Always smiling, he helps out the students and me beyond measure! A small celebration to ring in his one year with us!
Had a long day at work but the tiredness evaporated when I saw this in the mail 🤩🤩 brewed a cup of tea 🍵 and ready to dig in! Thank you
@kkariko
for this gem 💎
We decided to do a staycation for my birthday weekend but that didn’t stop my crew who came all the way AT MIDNIGHT with a cake and the best gift 🎁 ever! How did I get so lucky 😭😭😭
#happiestmentorever
Thank you guys, you made me day ♥️♥️
Our favorite post lab meeting tradition is to get some grub together and unwind after an intense meeting! Today the meeting went for 3.5 hours - 8 presentations but this is my fav part of the week! To see them bubbling with enthusiasm and data is >>>> coffee ☕️ but imagine having

Our PanCSIR translational neuroscience grant, the foundations for which were laid in May 2022 (one month after I joined CCMB) got sanctioned this week!!! Took us 2 years & several rounds of review/iterations but I am genuinely excited for all the cool science to come, esp the
A simple visit to one’s hometown, a place of familiarity that feels like a hug can sometimes help decompress way better than a visit to some tourist spot/ scenic locale! Musings after my visit to coimbatore..

’s 1 year lab-versary today over momos 🥟! We both swiped right and haven’t regretted it since 😁😁 in fact seeing her data, I can’t believe it’s only been a year! Keep soaring and I’ll keep adding wind to your back !!
I see this meme, I raise you our first summer intern
@aamaarkatha
who optimized a protocol that has tripled our dna yields and is now back as a dissertation student to drive her own independent project. Go figure 🤷🏻♀️

After living away from family for 15 years, I’ve missed all the small and big occasions and it’s been such a joy the past year making up for it by attending EVERYTHING and soaking up the family time ☺️☺️☺️☺️☺️
