Guys, I have a small house, with a shop, garage, barn and shed on 21 acres... I have more cars than I care to admit on Twitter. Married with 6 children.
Do it all on a single income, I make good money now, but we started down this road on well below avg household income.
The only thing stopping a family from having a small house in the Midwest and one car on a single income in 2024 is that because wages are much higher now (especially for women) the opportunity cost of working as an unpaid cook/maid/nanny is higher.

Got my wife pregnant in the middle of the most tenuous time of my professional life. Very middle class, about to have the sixth kid.
Stop being weenies, it's not some terrible financial burden to have kids, and my kids are having, and will continue to have, a great life.
I believed this until I actually saw what happens to young men when they start earning some serious $$, they get a place to live, marry and have kids all in the span of like 2-3 years. Even seen cases where a dude gets his gf/wife pregnant not even a month after his promotion
