April 1st has come and gone, and it is time we showed our hand. The skull at the base of this reconstruction was produced by an early experiment in using AI to 'sketch out' missing portions of fossil craniums with likely matches, applied to a Vrykul skull from World of Warcraft.

@lastbilslasse I'd say it's closer to 50%. I'm a total amateur at this, but there's a lot you can tell just from the bone. The thing is, you can tweak that in all sorts of directions to give it almost any impression you want. A lot try to make them closely resemble modern Europeans.

@SiebenAdam @Sulkalmakh There's no clear evidence in regard to neanderthal pigmentation. The same evidence that would paint early modern Europeans as dark does the same for Neanderthals. Even the supposed neanderthal "red hair gene" is primarily found in Taiwanese aboriginals, who are dark-haired.

@Coolio_Art @jutyrannus There's actually no evidence that they were pale at all. They certainly aren't the source of any of the major known pigment reducing genes, though they carried some lesser known ones. Even the "red hair gene" is something of a pop-sci clickbait inspired myth.

@AchaiosII @Sulkalmakh He's got close relations to the Ancient North Eurasians, who ties to both Amerindians and Europeans. Sort of a cousin to modern European populations, and a major contributor to Amerindians with South American populations having the most. Latinos tend to be a mix of these two.
