I take it that you aren't a Hindu. Else, you'd know that a temple is the abode and property of the divinity which resides in that space and is not a tourist touchpoint not a public assembly point in the manner a Church, Gurudwara or Mosque. It's the divinities home.

Ram Navami is celebrated as well. But, while Ram is more like an ideal and thus is a bit distant and good for veneration, Krishna signifies the approachable Neighbourhood kid/youth/man. The relationship with him is a lot more intimate. It's like celebrating a family member.

I am not in a position to comment on the justification of the eviction. However, there have been past history of those labelled 'encroachers' having lynched some locals. The most notable is a lynching of 8 in 1980s.
