In Garissa County, I reviewed a transformative project by the Kenya Forestry Research Institute (KEFRI) in partnership with the International Labour Organization (ILO) that is turning the invasive Prosopis juliflora, ‘Mathenge,' from an environmental threat into economic opportunity. Dubbed “Prosopis for Decent Green Jobs and Livelihood Support,” the initiative is tackling the plant's rapid spread across 45 counties; 7 of which are worst affected, by innovatively repurposing it into charcoal, soap, chicken feed, furniture and even food products like sugar cake and margarine. Beyond restoring ecosystems, this project is creating jobs and improving livelihoods in Garissa and Tana River, with plans to expand nationwide. I was accompanied by Forestry PS Gitonga Mugambi, KEFRI CEO Dr. Jane Kinyanjui, the leadership of Garissa County led by H.E. Governor @Nathif_J_Adam and Garissa County Commissioner Mohamed Mwabudzo.
