Appreciate you replying to me here and privately, so I’ll just share publicly what I said to you via DM: I respect you a lot, which is why it’s just disappointing. I can hold in one hand that there are forces at work we may want DOGE to fight, or that this controversy is less important than terrorism. That is obvious. It’s also a total strawman. One can obviously hold the importance of stories like this and also hold a moral and ethical high ground on people like this 25 year old punk. You have a tremendous amount of power and influence - why use it to defend him? When we don’t police ourselves it gives the mob an excuse to police us. It makes all of it worse. I know in my heart that you know better and it’s not defensible, I wish you’d just say so. I genuinely appreciate the dialogue and hope you hear me out and maybe change your mind - or use your influence in these circles to convey how toxic lowering the standards this way is.

Yikes. I’m sympathetic to the idea of not letting the press control who gets hired, but it’s increasingly clear that some of the DOGE hires were not properly vetted and should not have access to restricted government information.
