I visited a low-decile school in my electorate today that is accepting Govt funding and will no longer ask for donations. They usually get only $2000 in donations. Instead they will get around $45,000 in funding. A huge win for low income families. #nzpol

National scrapped compulsory superannuation and today most economists agree that was one of the biggest mistakes any NZ Govt has made. If they get the chance to scrap social insurance we will look back on that decision with the same regret.

Today I used the extra day off to compare and eventually buy two large appliances, to have family brunch at a packed-out cafe and went to a lovely community Matariki celebration where the queues to buy food were massive. Tell me more about public holidays being bad for business.

Fair Pay Agreements are actually the exact opposite of “unionism by stealth”. They effectively extend the benefits of collective bargaining to non-union workers. Unions’ support for them is arguably an altruistic effort to improve the position of all workers.

The Coalition Govt has increased the minimum wage by $1.20, just like we did last year. National says it is “too far, too fast”, just like they did last year. MBIE predicts tens of thousands of new jobs to be created in the next twelve months, just like they did last year. #nzpol

Why can’t we attract enough nurses? We pay them too little. It’s a global market. Demand is higher than supply. Economics 101 tells us that we are not paying a high enough price to increase supply to meet demand. Tinkering with Immigration settings can help but only at the edges.

Fair Pay Agreements are a lot like legislation. They set minimum standards. What makes them better than legislation is that they are industry specific plus employers and workers get a direct say in setting those standards. Weird that BusinessNZ doesn’t want to be involved.

Yes we need confidence elections are run soundly. But there’s one hell of a beat up going on. Mistakes happen. They are being found and nothing so far has impacted the result. In 1999 a whole ballot box containing enough votes to change an electorate result went missing.
