Still reading but some observations about German metaphysicians: After Kant systematized metaphysics in a somewhat standardized way, he destroyed the metaphysical basis of liberalism: an appropriated Christianity that assumes everyone (or at least an overwhelming majority) has Christian values and therefore is inherently "good" and acts out of rational self interest for the whole due to the Locke's theory of the social contract. Out of Kant came two schools of anti-liberalism: Schopenhauer and Hegel, who approached metaphysics with pessimism and optimism respectively. Schopenhauer uses Kant's theories and posits his own, that the metaphysical reality of everything is connected through a force called the "will", and that all of life is suffering through the inevitable chaotic forces of reality that negate life itself. Therefore, he preaches the ascetic life, so as to minimize feeling and therefore, pain, as he posits that all pleasure is accompanied by a greater pain in the future from desire. Hegel's theory is that a world spirit that is moving reality in a rational way, guiding humanity towards continually higher understanding of truth, creating an increasingly progressive reality that moves through time through a dialectical method, whereby events are understood through their opposing dialectic, a thesis and and antithesis, and a greater understanding comes through their synthesis. From Schopenhauer comes Nietzsche, who acknowledges the chaos and the suffering of reality, but posits an optimistic way forward, the elevation of the supreme adventurer, the risk taker, the person who is willing to extend humanity to limits that it had never achieved before, who he calls the Superman. He extends this to concepts of race and society, and says that the weak and those who believe in Christianity, which was brought to Europe through the Jews, have a false "slave morality" which seeks just to reverse their fortunes of being powerless and those mass of men should be ignored or discarded. From Hegel comes Marx, who agrees with Hegel in the dialectical method of analyzing history, only he replaces the world spirit with his theory that what guides humanity is their material conditions. For Marx, he views society structures as being whole dependent on their economic mode of production, which is determined by the level of technology a society possesses, and that socialism would be a natural result after capitalism became obsolete in fully developed capitalist nations. And from Nietzsche comes Hitler/Nazism, who interpreted Nietzsche's ideology quite literally, and posits that Aryans are indeed this master race and that the Jews were either holding Germany back or actively destroying it from within and thus were those false "slave morality" teachers that must be purged from society. He points to Marx as a Jew who inspired communism, an ideology that preaches a sense of camaraderie among the masses, something that Nietzsche adamantly campaigned against in his own writings of "deluded socialists" in the 1880s, around the time of Marx's passing. And from Marx comes Lenin, who went on to create the foundation for the practical manifestation of Marxist ideology in the Soviet Union. His main contribution theory wise was that imperialism is capitalism's final stage, where all capitalist countries had no other territory to expand to, and thus had to go to war with each other for more influence, as he said was the catalyst for World War I. He also disproved Marx's idea that communism would develop first in developed nations, as Germany itself would descend into fascism, while Russia was a semi-feudal economy before its revolution, without a wide proletarian base, replaced by the peasantry. Given the results of the past 100 years, I think I know what direction I want the world to move in.
