A Promising Future for Oxford and Entrepreneurship With its growing role in shaping AI, a new generation of student-led unicorns, and a renewed energy around supporting startups, it seems that after 800 years, entrepreneurship is finally taking centre stage at Oxford - a cause that I, along with my COO Ana Bakshi (from the incredible Oxford Foundry), and countless others, have long championed. In 2011, the highlight of my year was the Silicon Valley Comes to Oxford series. Looking ahead, I see no reason why, in 10 years, we won’t be celebrating Oxford Comes to Silicon Valley. The foundations are being laid for a future of extraordinary innovation. Watch this space.

@dougall @AnneBoden Mine wasn’t dissimilar, which, like you, makes us more the exception. We got lucky and received scholarships; I’d expect many more people would consider startups if they were given the same chances as well.

@dougall @AnneBoden Anne was in finance for ~30 yrs, ending at the top/exec at a bank before making the leap. A great achievement, but I'm sure she wouldn't call herself working-class when she started Starling.

@t_blom Fair enough, and true, economic success begets economic success; as GB experienced prior to the US taking over. I'll be sure to sing Rule Britannia! the next time we meet as a reminder 😎

I'm suggesting that economics, not culture, is the primary driver behind the difference. The US has roughly 5x the population of the UK but deploys nearly 20x more capital into startups (effectivly 4x more). If any country suddenly deployed 4x more capital, it would naturally see more startups. Despite the higher student debt and weaker safety net in the US, startups are disproportionately founded by those from high-income backgrounds—7 out of 10 (so no student debt concerns). It's the financially able, not the average debt-straddled student, who typically can even consider starting a company — again economics, not culture.
