My stance: all tools have their place: nutrition, exercise, supplements, Rx meds. Many factors play into what combination is best for an individual. (Except the first two which everyone should pay attention to.)

@queen_pepe @NIH I don’t think anyone’s thinking about getting rid of the NIH! At at least I hope not!

This seems like an interesting comparison point for the IDC rate at Universities given @NIH Intramural has a more singular focus (meaning all research and some clinical), like a med school but even fewer on site educational obligations etc.

@mhoeft @elonmusk @NIH There are settings for this, but you need an infrastructure and especially if there’s animal research involved.

@IshmailSaboor It depends if the funds are directed to research. Clearly overheads are critical, but what still not determined is if the overall research budget remains the same or grows as a consequence of this.

@redairforce @elonmusk @NIH It certainly will encourage people to do bolder work. @NIH grants over the last few years have mostly shifted to very low risk often already completed work. I know because I sat on grant study sections for years. We need to reward high risk, high payoff work. And iterate faster.

@canna_brain @NIH It depends if the overall budget is cut or not. If this allows for more or larger grants, that would be a major adjustment for the host institutions, but it would allow for more science as well. But agree someone has to pay to keep the lights on.

@AndrewHires @NIH One hopes that some of the incredibly high taxes that I’m paying in California would be directed to some of the incredible research being done at UCs to cover heating bills and indirect, etc.

@AndrewHires @andpru It’s not clear less money will go to labs. That has not been stated at all. At least I haven’t seen anything about it.

@EHPlimsoll1 @suzyd68 @NIH It’s important to note that the university gets money on top of that 100K for Indirects. It’s not taken from the research fund. It’s there to support things that support the research, heating bills, etc..
