This is absolutely a solid concern. Because Georgia gives MARTA jack squat for dedicated funding, the agency relies heavily on "fare box" (the fares collected from riders) in order to fund operations. Lower ridership means less money to properly operate trains and buses.

Mayor Dickens has walked back on Beltline rail, now saying that analysis will decide if the path gets rail or "rubber tires," "small pods" or nothing at all. Similarly, Beltline chief Clyde Higgs says their "position on all things transit" is yet to come.

Of all the transit projects to go all in on, we get a concerted focus on the one that does not add transit capacity, a new line, nor new areas served with high capacity transit.
Just a station redesign.
Ironically, MARTA ignoring local leaders and pushing ahead on an unpopular project is one advantage to an independent transit agency.
Unfortunately, they consistently use that independence to the detriment of the system’s growth, rather than in pursuit of its improvement.
