Fall sports so far: Jesuit state champions in volleyball, boys and girls soccer and runner ups in boys and girls cross country. Central Catholic state champs in boys cross country, ranked first in boys soccer and second in volleyball. But hey, private schools don’t recruit.

Any night you get a Gatorade (water) bath is a good night as a coach. First undefeated regular season in the history of Hillcrest football. Playoffs start next week and are a whole new ballgame!

Football coaches- What are some thing you do in your program to instill toughness/grit/nastiness in your players?
One thing we already do is that every player (QB’s too!) in our program hits the sled during every single practice, but I’m looking for some new ideas.

I find that parents need to meet me as the head coach half way. It makes my job way easier to promote the kid if they have a realistic group of schools they are interested in, qualify for, have a degree they want to study and can play at that level. I can work with that!

We teach our QBs that our plays are either a “key” play or a “progression” play. An example of a key play would be double hitches where we make the key- the OLB wrong wether he goes to the flat or takes the slot. A progression play would be our boot game. Flat, middle, deep.

We call this concept “Thunder” aka- Tight End Under. We will take the 1 on 1 if we get it with the “X” receiver, but otherwise we are playing a high low on the OLB with the TE and Slot. I’d say 75% of the time the TE gets the ball.
