This - “Hope is not optimism, which expects things to turn out well, but something rooted in the conviction that there is good worth working for” Seamus Heaney
@nationaltrust
Telegraph deliberately misleading again - so sad they are intent on stoking anger and division when there is none. Our wonderful volunteers are entirely at liberty to celebrate

As
@telegraph
itself reports, we are not facing an inquiry. Our purpose remains as it always was - to care for nature beauty and history, for everyone forever. If researching the history of National Trust places is wrong, then we’ve been doing something wrong for 125 years.
Pleased that the Charity Commission has confirmed that our work into the links between colonial history and slavery and
@nationaltrust
places was within our charitable aims.
Delighted to announce that we have acquired Munstead Wood, the home and garden of Gertrude Jekyll
Jekyll changed horticultural history from Munstead, so this is an exciting opportunity to share the story of this remarkable woman to a new generation
I am always up for constructive challenge but take my lead from boots on the ground. Our membership is growing faster than ever and we are seeing more visitors to our places than ever before. Thank you everyone for your support.
#everyoneneedsnature
The
@nationaltrust
is an independent charity and therefore our appointments process is free of political influence - unlike other publicly funded organisations as we have seen of late.
Braverman claims Tories have "failed to put forward" ppl with their agenda when it comes to public appointments to institutions, eg National Trust. "They're [the left] very well organised ... We don't prepare, don't organise, & I think that's something we've taken for granted"
First day out - Went to Murlough beach to help Patrick and Mark with the clean up - I really do not understand how people can leave such mess for others to sort..30 bags later.. but the paddle made it all worthwhile.

@NTMurlough
In these challenging times there is an ever greater need for fresh air and beauty. So proud that the NT can continue to serve the nation -
#naturebeautyhistory
We're aiming to open many of our gardens and parks for free during this difficult time, so the nation can use open spaces to relax and refresh, while following the government’s social distancing guidance. We will be closing our houses, cafés and shops this week.
Tedious poor journalism again. This headline entirely misrepresents what the
@EnglishHeritage
CEO said - and makes baseless comparisons between two organisations that work well together
#noculturewarhere
Meanwhile our membership is growing, our staff survey was overwhelmingly positive (despite the year we have been through) and our properties are looking amazing. Thank you for your support.

#stopcharityattacks
From planning to heritage protections, the National Trust has a long history of working with policymakers to further our cause
This isn't about politics - it's about standing up for the things we were set up to care about: nature, beauty & history.
I’ve had such a heart warming day at our properties today with the public so supportive of us opening - but sadly, hand on heart, it is just not in the public interest to open tomorrow. - Please stay safe everyone.
#naturebeautyhistory
A thing of nature, beauty and history destroyed, and with it, the memories of thousands of people who loved that tree and everything it stood for. Shame on whoever did it.
@nationaltrust
Fantastic to celebrate the transformation of Castlefield Viaduct with friends tonight
Thanks to
@AndyBurnhamGM
&
@bevcraig
for coming and sharing your support - already looking ahead to Phase 2 and beyond!
DID is a weirdly exposing experience and I feel ever so slightly sick ahead of tomorrow, but you need to know that Lauren and her team were awesome - super professional and a credit to the BBC
@BBCRadio4
@DesertIsleDiscs
If rumours are correct this would be a deeply depressing step.
From flooding to wildfires we're facing the impacts of climate change here and now. We need to step up ambition, not water it down
We had record breaking attendance at our AGM this year - in person and on line. Thanks to everyone who voted- your support is very much appreciated.
#foreveryoneforever
So pleased that the government have recognised the need for access to green space. Please help us stay open. Book if you can and maintain social distancing. Thank you
#naturebeautyhistory
Following the Government's announcement of a four-week lockdown in England, we're pleased to be able to keep the outdoor spaces we care for open, including coast and countryside sites and car parks, as well as, gardens and parklands.
Today we launch a landmark report on climate adaptation at
@nationaltrust
.
Climate change is the biggest threat to the places we care for, yet adaptation's often ignored. We're calling for a Climate Resilience Act with legal duties & targets for action:
On my way home after a busy few days engaging with policymakers and Parliamentarians on nature and heritage protections. Pleased to have first meeting with
@DefraGovUK
to discuss our concerns - we'll continue to engage with the Government to get the reassurances we need.
The
@nationaltrust
has today announced it is ditching
#plastic
from its 5M
#membership
cards, removing 12.5 tonnes of plastic - the equivalent to 2 African elephants. The new cards will be made from a super strength paper
#plasticwaste
Lots of questions today about opening. We will be doing everything can to keep our gates open and visitors safe within guidelines. We all need fresh air, open space and access to nature now more than ever
#naturebeautyhistory
Culture Warriors’ claims grow more ludicrous. This is nonsense and deliberately designed to provoke anger and division when our nation needs to heal.

Pleased to have this letter published in
@thetimes
today.
We should be championing nature and the bodies that protect it, not attacking them. It's the only route we have to sustainable growth and a healthy economy.
We are 124 years old today. A huge thank you to all of our members, volunteers, staff and supporters. You have brought joy to millions by helping us look after some of our nations most precious places.
All done!! Exhausted but buzzing from the atmosphere. 60,000 people and £25 million raised for charity including
@nationaltrust
.
@Great_Run
is an extraordinarily brilliant example of collective human endeavour.
#GreatNorthRun
Can you imagine the abuse I would have taken if I had reminded our volunteers that Christmas is coming. Sadly another example of the DT wilfully find things to make people angry about.
An honour to welcome His Majesty The King and the First Minister of Wales to
@ErddigNT
today - His Majesty's first visit to a
@nationaltrust
property since his accession
Delighted so many people are out getting much needed air and access to nature - help us keep you safe by social distancing and wearing masks where needed - we will not tolerate abuse towards our staff or volunteers when they are simply doing their job and adhering to govt regs.
Thank you to everyone who took part in our AGM today. Open respectful debate is a healthy thing and I appreciated the chance to hear everyone’s views. Thank you especially to everyone who voted. You made a difference.
Accepting this award brought back lots of painful memories of the last two years but also an overwhelming sense of pride in what my brilliant team has achieved. Thankyou

I wish I had the crystal ball he thinks I should have. We used our reserves and then rebuilt them as any responsible organisation would do in a time of crisis. Thanks to our amazing members, we have weathered this crisis and can start to invest once more .
Happy 125th anniversary
@WickenFenNT
!
This famous nature reserve was just a two-acre fragment of land when the Trust bought it for £10 in 1899. It is now 2,000 acres with over 9,000 species recorded – a wonderful example of what can happen when we give nature space to breathe.
Evidence is a very helpful thing - sure there will be people who disagree - but this reflect our own staff and volunteer survey and confirms what I see and hear on the ground.-

On my way to
@COP26
- looking forward to talking about nature based solutions to prevent climate harm - including calling on Government to ban the use of peat in compost by 2025.

#naturebeautyhistory
Joy of the Trust is that you learn something new every day. If you enlarge this you will see a small hole below the eaves, designed to enable servants to ‘eavesdrop’ the conversations happening below before someone entered the house. Thinking of having one installed in Heelis 😉
Our process is led by members of our Council who in turn are appointed by our members. Our members are leftie, rightie, and everything in betweeny. That is as it should be. We are here for everyone
Hurrah - today is ‘a quarter day’ we are halfway between the darkest point of the year and the spring equinox - The year is turning...
#everyoneneedsnature
We have not turned our back on our houses in favour of the outdoors. The trust cares for both on behalf of the nation and they are equally important

Today's the day! Please do tune in at 7pm.
It's an amazing programme- and it shows just why we all need to act now to stop nature's decline in the UK. Doing nothing isn't an option.

Have had lots of good things happen this week including the appointment of
@SandyNairne
as our Deputy Chair. Brilliant to have such a credible historian and curator in this role.

Hi all. Been a busy week and looking at some of the comments I thought it would be helpful to set a few things straight

Huge thanks to all our wonderful staff and volunteers who will be working super hard over Easter welcoming thousands of people to our places. So proud of them.

There's so much that needs people's attention on social media today. But a small, important thing for UK charities & 'wokeness': The Telegraph has apologised to the National Trust & English Heritage. Last week it published a mendacious headline that broke IPSO’s Editors’ Code 1/4
To be clear if anyone was listening to radio 4 just now. The beanbags were used 6 years ago as a temporary way of viewing the ceiling while the furniture had to be removed for conservation work to be done.
So the big day is here!!! Hubby and I all set for the

Hard to put into words the profound sense of loss on the passing of Her Majesty the Queen. A life of unstinting service that has been an inspiration to us all.
We’re deeply saddened by the news of the death of Her Majesty The Queen. During her reign, The Queen’s towering leadership and unshakable integrity were a source of pride and inspiration for generations of people around the world. (1/3)
Nature, beauty and history - the transformed Castlefield Viaduct has it all in spades!
So pleased to be here for the press preview, ahead of opening to the public next weekend. Tickets go live on Monday!

Working with Pamela at Rowallsne today welcoming visitors - everyone sticking to social distancing and hugely grateful for the opportunity to get outdoors.

Deeply saddened by today’s news. The Duke of Edinburgh became patron of the Trust’s ‘Enterprise Neptune’ in 1965 leading to the acquisition of 574 miles of U.K’s coastline - for everyone. He leaves a lasting and extraordinary legacy.
Absolutely thrilled to announce that the BBC's Hidden Treasures of the National Trust will return for a second series!
It captures so much of what's great about the Trust: amazing places &collections - cared for by amazing people
Airing later this year!
