One of the hardest challenges during a disaster is the uncertainty victims face about available resources while adjusting to a new reality. More educational programs are needed to raise awareness about these resources and provide guidance on rebuilding lives during and after a disaster. #LAFires

Over 100 #tornado warnings were issued yesterday in Central and South #Florida as Hurricane #Milton’s outer bands encountered favorable conditions for tornado formation. Tragically, several lives were lost, and unexpected areas suffered damage, despite being outside the hurricane’s direct path. There’s a critical need for more education about tornadoes linked to hurricanes! P.S. Here are the locations of the confirmed tornadoes from yesterday’s filtered reports. Data: SPC (

#Milton is about to landfall near Sarasota, FL. Impacts are escalating! An excessive wind warning covers Tampa, St. Petersburg, and Clearwater to the north/west of the eyewall. Major concerns include excessive rainfall and flash floods across central Florida. Severe storm surges now affecting areas to the south/east of the eyewall, including Naples, Cape coral, Englewood and Fort Myers. #FLwx

Simple yet effective tip to reduce pressure on your roof by up to 30% during storms: CLOSE THE INTERIOR DOORS too! This helps balance pressure inside your home and reduces stress on the roof. #Milton #FLwx
#Milton: This is a terrific tip from @IBHS_org. Everyone knows to close your exterior windows and doors. But also closing your interior doors can be just as important in limiting pressure on your roof.

The outer bands of #Milton have begun to bring tropical storm-force winds and tens of tornado warnings over the past few hours. Gauges in #Naples and #FortMyers are starting to show some storm surge. The eye is currently about 120 miles SW of Tampa, 110 miles SW of Fort Myers, with maximum winds reaching 130 mph (Category 4).

Two weeks ago, I shared a video from @MesoMax919 illustrating what a 15 ft storm surge could look like for #Helene. I didn’t expect we’d be here again so soon, with so many lives and properties at risk from the devastating storm surges #Milton could bring. While Florida's building codes held up against the powerful winds of Cat 4 #Ian in 2022, storm surges are a different story. Are our homes truly built to withstand such catastrophic surges? I have my doubts. This highlights a much larger issue: "Urban development in low-lying, flood-prone areas." #Milton #FLwx
Absolutely heartbreaking footage captured by our surge probe of catastrophic storm surge washing away homes. I have never seen anything like this. We have now left the area as hoards of emergency crew have arrived. #HurricaneIan FULL VIDEO -

#Milton is completing an eyewall replacement cycle, leading to changes in its maximum wind speed and an increase in size. While it’s relatively compact now, by landfall, it will be larger, affecting areas both inside and outside the cone with storm surge, winds, and rainfall. Per the latest NHC advisory (8 AM EST - Oct 8th) for #Milton: * Severe winds at the higher end of a Category 3 hurricane are expected, with the potential for significant wind damage. * Rainfall of 5 to 12 inches, with localized totals up to 18 inches, is forecast across central to northern Florida through Thursday, posing a moderate to high flash flooding risk for areas like Tampa and Orlando. * Storm surge of 10-15 feet is possible from Anclote River, FL to Englewood, FL, including Tampa Bay. If you're in a storm surge evacuation zone, this may be your last chance to evacuate. Follow the guidance of your local authorities. Stay safe!

Per the latest NHC advisory (5 AM EST - Oct 7th) for #Milton: * Significant uncertainty remains around the exact landfall location and timing, but Category 3 hurricane-force winds (125 mph, nearing Category 4) are expected. * The storm surge threat is very real. The entire west coast of Florida should prepare for some level of surge. From Yankeetown to Bonita Beach, surges could reach double digits. These numbers may change as the landfall location becomes clearer. * Over the next day, #Milton is expected to strengthen into a Category 4 hurricane. However, it will encounter less favorable conditions before landfall, likely weakening to a strong Category 3. Despite this, it will remain a large and powerful storm. * After landfall, #Milton will become extratropical—bringing heavy rain across the Florida peninsula. Rainfall totals of 6 to 12 inches are expected. Now is the time to prepare for #Milton. Stay calm and follow local officials' instructions.

There is still considerable uncertainty regarding the intensity and exact location of #Milton’s landfall. Models suggest a period of rapid intensification, but before landfall, the storm may encounter a more hostile environment with dry air and increasing wind shear. How much this weakens the eyewall will play a crucial role in determining the wind speeds and storm surge severity at landfall. One concern is that the storm could expand in size due to these conditions, which would increase the risk of a more severe storm surge. If landfall occurs north of #TampaBay, the surge in that area could be significant. A lot could still change in the next few hours. Now is the time to be prepared! #FLwx
