When I'm sad, stressed, or upset, I do what I always do; pick up a book. When I want to challenge myself and grow, I read. This time is no different, so I compiled a roundup of books that have helped shape my politics and understanding of racism today.
@King_Primus_
This is gross, fatphobic, and is very much the reason why so many people who choose to work out, train, or diet end up back where they started and dissatisfied. Food is not the enemy here.
@Brieyonce
It’s a backhanded compliment for sure. “I would never do what you did; perhaps it’s because you are more evolved than I, but i also don’t think I’ll ever (want to) get there.” 😂🙄
@TheKalenAllen
@naima
I never thought food critics were culinary trained. Generally are they? Like the old school ones we think of who do write ups in papers? Because the critiques were never JUST about the food. Keith is exactly the type of person i would want explaining restaurant experiences to me.
@DecolonialBlack
MSG is great for flavor and also, in so many foods other than Asian cuisine. It does exacerbate migraines for those who suffer from them (ie me)...but so does regular ass salt. It’s gross how the medical community continues to contribute to racial bias.
I hate when people are amazed by siblings/parent & child looking alike and people are like “duh” like okay but DNA is still fascinating and amazing as hell to think about.
I absolutely hate the “being depressed” now has the same meaning to people as being sad or not having a good day. It’s not the same thing, and it ends up trivializing true depression and depressive episodes.
@Imani_Barbarin
All of this! It’s also some classim up in there mixed in. White pillaging ass aristocracy stopped seasoning their food once it became more readily available to the poors in their country. It was suddenly associated with being low class.

We are both hyper visible and completely erased. It’s infuriating. It’s gaslighting at its finest. You only feel sane because the black girl next to you clearly sees it too.
This fucking thread. This is why we don’t have parity. Because these people exist, they work with us, and they truly think asking for representation is a racism. Like, the cognitive dissonance it takes to be so actively racist is mind-boggling
Today, a black film editor posted in a Facebook group for Hollywood editors looking to connect w/other black editors, as there is severe underrepresentation in post-production & they can be hard to find. What ensued is a slew of white editors who immediately objected (THREAD) 1.
On casting visible BW: “It came from a desire to put the audience in the shoes of families who witnessed a relative of theirs pass. “You’re left thinking, ‘Can everyone see what I’m seeing? Are they going to get found out?’”- yes, especially in context of director’s own mother
@AsiaChloeBrown
BOOKS! Specifically books on the Black experience in that city/country. If I can’t find, then a book by a Black author from that city/country.

@seabethree
I'm excited about the diversity. A fat girl, a black lesbian, and a gender queer character, as "popular mean girls"? Unheard of.
@WannasWorld
If he wanted to highlight her relationship with her mom, he would have researched her relationship with her mom and her passing would have certainly come up?!

I hope people (re: men) read to understand and not just to bluster and spew their “not all men” chant. Focus on the phrases “make a habit” “actively seeking” + “significantly younger” before deciding to respond yall. Pls.

She. Started. A. Book Club. With the right books. And resources on how to get started. And a discussion after so everyone can learn and be educated together. It’s literally the whole point. It’s how she’s choosing to teach.
@TheBlackLayers
I don’t think i ever realized how weird it was that Monica was owned a fixer upper and was having domestic issues with her man in this video like she wasn’t 16. Like whet?! 😂😩
My first date with my current boyfriend was a bookstore date! He took me to Borders (RIP), we browsed shelves and talked about books and authors we love, hate, want to read. We had coffee and read each other random passages. He bought me the Hunger Games trilogy before we left.
I wanna go on a book date. Idk what that would entail or even look like though... are we buying books, reading together? But either way that’s what I want lol

What’s so frustrating is that so much of Black diaspora history is oral. Our records are kept by mouth. The assumption that what’s written is the right history is a white western way of thinking, + goes to show that our language should not be shared. No respect for our traditions

Sometimes he breathes when he sleeps. Is this a BLACK thing?! I can’t tell becsuse it feel so different than how WE do it. Is BREATHING ALSO BLACK?!
Given that across most ethnicities/races in America, women are the primary parent (even in two parent homes), mixed children raised by white moms vs black moms will have cultural differences in their experiences.
@AmeriKraut
Flyy Girl. Tracy has some growth and depth in the latter half of the novel. Winter irks the depths of my soul, to this day; no accountability, now growth, no range.
@JoelleMonique
This is what happens when source material is hopelessly dated/attached to the time it was created, and isn’t updated for present day proclivities. 😂😩
@shaTIRED
As a recovering people pleaser, i think people see manipulative as automatically meaning a desire to harm or to be bad. Vs control and wanting to coerce a specific outcome.
