@campbellclaret Dangerous to warmongerers like you who seem so eager to sacrifice lives. Your actions are partly responsible for Trump’s support - remember that.

Many people argue that we should tax the rich more. Perhaps some projects should strictly be philanthropic ventures. You cannot expect working class people, struggling to make ends meet, to accept that their tax money is being spent on some of these projects, rather than on tackling the poverty right in front of their noses. If you take government funding away, will it make these NGOs more accountable to philanthropic investors? Who’s scrutinising the ROI? Rory himself has said that foreign aid is misused and inefficiently spent and needs reform.

If Rory Stewart and his wife want to help Afghan basket weavers and artisan cabinet makers earn a living they can bloody well fund that themselves. It’s just the kind of ridiculous vanity project pathetic poshos do so they feel less guilty about having millions in the bank.

I found this conversation fascinating and revealing. Rory himself has written at length in his book about the vast amount of waste of foreign aid. Why is he quiet about that now? Rory is a product of USAID. So is his wife. What’s happening is an existential threat as far as his credibility and ego are concerned. I used to like the guy. I force myself to listen so I’m not in an echo chamber but it’s it’s been especially hard after the US election.

@Solid_Squid13 @EggySoldier @PolitlcsUK @thetimes If businesses want to move to 4 day weeks then fine, but not the public sector on tax payer dime. There’s too much to do. They need some turnaround/start up energy. Sometimes you have to fire the lazy ones en masse to motivate the conscientious ones.
