Fellow journalists, if you report on something you first saw in a student publication, please give them the first reported line and link. They deserve the respect we would give any other colleagues.
I took nearly 3,000 pictures during my embark on
@TheCVN69
. Want to guess how many I finished with after editing? Also watch
@USNINews
tomorrow for my story about Ike and its deployment.
As the Virginia coastline came into view, sailors about
@TheCVN69
pulled out their phones to make calls to love ones. After nine months, most of it in the Red Sea, USS Dwight D. Eisenhower was home.
Damn, how do I break it to my fiancé that after 11 years we’re going to have to end things because I’m not planning to change my name? Is that something you do over text or…?
A listener wrote to ask if it’s a “red flag” that his fiancé doesn’t want to take his last name. No it’s not just a red flag. It’s a dealbreaker. Men, don’t marry women who won’t take your name. That’s a wall of separation she wants to keep between you. It won’t be the only one.
Hello journalists: let’s talk about an issue in our field. We have all determined unpaid work is unacceptable. Yet, we’re perfectly fine with college newspaper reporters working for free. (Some people even take their work without credit.)
It’s always weird to announce personal news during a pandemic, but....
Some personal news: I’ll be joining
@capgaznews
in June to cover military affairs, including the Naval Academy and Fort Meade.
So what does this mean? 👇
2/ Our corps member class will cover important and under-reported issues in their communities like: COVID-19, healthcare, rural issues, income inequality, minority issues, military and veteran affairs. Read the full press release here:
@MattWalshBlog
Or, it could be thanks to Ellis Island “Americanizing” our last name, there’s only one of me. It’s the name I was born with, the name I earned my degrees in and the name that I use on all my hard earned bylines. I’m my own person, not property.
This is my last week as a reporter with
@frednewspost
. I start as a military affairs reporter and
@report4america
corps member for
@capgaznews
on June 1. I'm excited about my new reporting adventure, but before I move on, I'm going to look back at some of my favorite stories.
Today, in covering a court-martial, I wrote over 1,000 words by hand. You can see some of my editing process here. Story soon
@capgaznews
. Thanks to
@Report4America
for th awesome press badge that I wore for the trial.
Today marks five years since the shooting at The Capital in Annapolis. I want to take a minute to talk to journalists because in five years, it seems we forgot all the lessons the Capital survivors and staff have been trying to teach us.
A bit of personal news: Today is my first day as the health/Fort Detrick reporter for
@frednewspost
. Happy to join a long list of
@TheEagleOnline
alumni to work at the paper. Have tips? Send them my way at hmongilio

In some personal news, this is my last week at
@capgaznews

@Report4America
. I’ve loved every minute of my time at the paper and as part of
@ChesapeakeGuild
. Make sure to subscribe to this great newspaper and support the team there.
I grew up reading
@baltimoresun
and
@HoCoTimes
. Today, one of my stories for
@capgaznews
was featured on the front page of The Baltimore Sun. So that's pretty much a childhood dream come true.

If I had all the money in the world, I would start a local paper to cover Howard County, Maryland. One of the richest counties in the world, a good school system, a local Main Street that had two historic floods, and there is pitiful news coverage.
“It’s not just the two individuals and how you feel about them or this situation; it’s the cultural collateral damage.” From

Journalists/society, it's time we talk about unpaid work at college newspapers. When I was elected EIC
@TheEagleOnline
10 (!) years ago, I was given a $4,000 stipend, pretax. Over the years,
@AmericanU
cut the stipend down until two years ago when AU took it away completely. 🧵
It just hit me that for the first time in my journalism career, not including internships, in reporting directly to a female editor. That’s wonderful. But it took me four jobs to get that.
If your character is a female journalist, SHE DOES NOT NEED TO SLEEP WITH HER SOURCE. (Please stop writing characters who do this. It’s unethical and unprofessional.)
Dear
@nytimes
, I really love your new tool for finding local newspapers to support. It's really appreciated. But please include
@frednewspost
. We're a local paper in Frederick, Md. You've even referenced some of the stories we broke in your paper.
At the beginning of June, I asked alumni of
@TheEagleOnline
to help me secure
@IRE_NICAR
memberships for all of the current staffers. In less than a week, thanks to alumni, friends and the AU community, we were able to get memberships. Here's a thread to thank everyone:
Theaters are also making it difficult to see these movies. I wanted to see “She Said” in theaters. I couldn’t find it playing at a theater within 30 minutes of my house 2.5 weeks after it was released.
"One after another, films for grown-ups have failed to find an audience big enough to justify their cost....'Tár' cost at least $35 million; ticket sales total $5.3 million. Universal spent $55 million [on] 'She Said,' which also took in $5.3 million."
@memangrum
I learned this in j-school, but also I cannot stress enough the importance of being on your college newspaper. It teaches you how to do local coverage like nothing else.
Some
@USNINews
personnel news. On Monday, the very talented Heather Mongilio, most recently on the military beat for

Horrible news: Fifteen have died in a shooting at Robb elementary school, according to Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, who said there are 14 students and one teacher killed. The shooter is dead.
Today marks two years since a person killed five people in the

Life of a Navy reporter: wake up at 7. Drive to Norfolk. Get to airfield at 1:30. Sit. Wait. Wait. Wait. Wait. Find a hotel because you’re definitely not flying out to a ship tonight.
Hello journo friends and the greater Twitterverse. We need to have a discussion about the role and value of local news. Here’s a thread to start as a jumping point:
Today my
#healthcarehero
is my mom, a pediatric nurse who has been working for at least 30 years. Here she is in her cloth mask and face shield that she has to wear at work.
If you are a reporter or publication that published an article headlined “chilling photos” or something similar about shooting at The Capital. Take a minute, pause and ask yourself if that is how you would like someone to cover your newsroom. I bet not.
US expected to take home silver in the Ice Skating Team event in

Someone in my new apartment's building named their WiFi "Dunder Mifflin." I now want to change mine to "Michael Scott Paper Company." Is this how you make friends?
Today is day two of the now four-day Induction Day process at

Sarah McBride, who in 2020 became the first openly transgender state senator in US history, is “quite likely” to run for Delaware’s lone House seat in likely event Rep. Lisa Blunt Rochester runs for Senate, a McBride adviser tells me.
When
@APStylebook
decided to change percent to %, a decision that just hurt,
@AllenWEtzler
decided
@frednewspost
would not follow suit. But then I went to
@capgaznews

Sorry for the self-promotion, but a series I worked very hard on just won a
@MDDCPress
’s Best of Show award, my first. The story itself is pretty incredible, like a local Dirty John. If you haven’t read it, it’s the quarantine distraction you need.
I work for a newspaper that lost five members of its staff just over two years ago in a mass shooting. Mr. President, it’s not a “beautiful sight” when journalists are hurt or killed.
I’m looking to report on mental health at the Naval Academy. If you are willing (current or former students, professors, etc) to talk, I’m always reachable at hmongilio
@capgaznews
.com or 443-355-6720 (that number works on Signal, too.) or DM me here or on Instagram.
This is how I want
@Jarias_Prime
remembered. So full of life and about to do something he loved, run into freezing cold water to support Special Olympics. Please take a moment to think of the staff of
@frednewspost
, Jeremy's friend and family. We're all reeling from his loss.
I’m back in Carroll County, Md., where I developed my reporting chops. I can’t help but be sad about how much Tribune/Alden has destroyed the paper here.
I will say this, it has been very interesting to be part of a newsroom during an outbreak, especially as the health reporter. I'm exhausted from trying to keep up with the coverage, but this has 1100 percent affirmed why I became a reporter. Journalism is so important.
A quick break from my usual tweeting to bring you newspaper-themed desserts in honor of

In the past two weeks, the staff of
@capgaznews
said goodbye to two editors and a reporter, all pillars of the community, and then remembered the 3rd anniversary of the shooting. And every day, we continued to put out "a damn paper." And we will continue to do so.
To add to this: you can do extremely meaningful work at a local paper. You don’t have to be at the Washington Post or New York Times or ProPublica or any other national outlet. (They do good work too)
I’ve spent the better part of the last two years trying to shed the mindset that in journalism (or maybe life) you can’t do meaningful work unless you live in NYC/DC/LA.
Reject that idea. It’s as toxic as it is pervasive. That’s about the only advice I can give from my career.
A lot of you are probably reading about Fort Detrick right now. (If you're in Maryland,
@frednewspost
has the story. So does
@baltimoresun
) But what is Fort Detrick? Here's a quick guide from a former Fort Detrick reporter.
Taking a break from the coronavirus coverage. Trying “I’m Tryna Nap,” a new beer from

I’m packing up my apartment and going through all the

Things that encourage me: student journalists who do an amazing job covering their communities.
Things that discourage me: universities that make it difficult for student journalists to do their job (esp. while also using them as promotion material for the school)
Good morning, as a reminder of how long this year has been, the impeachment trials of President Donald Trump and the massive bushfires that killed at 500 million animals in Australia also happened in 2020. Today is Thursday, April 9.
It’s an unusual year at the Naval Academy. And restrictions to liberty and lack of communication, among other concerns, have led to low morale and mental health. My latest for

Today I witnessed a pretty horrible crash on I-295, on my way home from the Navy Yard. It happened right in front of me. I am in awe of the number of people who jumped from their cars and ran to help the victim. A nice little reminder that there are still good people.
Another big mistake: I chose not to use a recorder for an interview with a professor. Then she wrote a blog post mischaracterizing my questions. Of course, I had no recording to set the record straight. Led to protests on campus against the paper & lots of nat’l coverage. 🤦♀️
As pro-Palestinian protests continue to pop up on college campuses, please make sure you are following the college newspapers and their reporters. They know these campuses and administrations better than any other reporter.
This is my third
