@GeorgeMonbiot You were born in Kensington, grew up in Oxford, went to a prep school and then went Brasenose College, Oxford. The fact you think you can even pass views on this country and it’s demographics is beyond me. Come live in Hounslow for a year.

The Astral Cafe Regency St, Westminster. The cabbie’s cafe. Can’t go wrong here or at the Regency over the road, which is often full of tourists. Decent Italian fayre in either. Got a Set 4 for £7.80 and feels like I’m in Isleworth - not SW1P!

Sad to hear this, a real London character. Fondly remember this clip of him describing Bermondsey as the last stronghold of the cockney in London in 2012 - which is even more true now than it was then.

@Mr_John_Oxley My great grandad grew up there. Whole family of 8 rented it, all the children worked for WH Smith’s selling papers at Waterloo, except for the women in the family who worked at the Hartley’s Jam factory in Bermondsey. They wouldn’t comprehend how much it is now!

Ian Nairn describing Brentford in 1966. ‘Water bubbles down spillways, sheds hold all manner of materials, wide boats bob up and down, a railway shed the size of a terminus opens on the canal. It is as diverse yet as harmonious as the dawn chorus of birds in a London square.’

The gentrification of Brentford in two pictures. The Royal Oak in 2008 vs ‘The Brook’ in 2023. No joke you can buy a pint in the Brook for a tenner (it’s about 10% abv to be fair). Was about £2.60 a pint in the Royal Oak back in 2008.

@culturaltutor Paris lacks the winding and uncoordinated medieval street patterns we still see across London, which is a shame. It’s 19th century uniformity is a strength and a drawback I think, the French have resolutely protected old buildings and townscapes but they’re a bit frozen in time.

Sad to hear this. I recommend people visit it before it closes in March 2025. Goddard’s shut across the road in 2018 after 128 years. Reckon that takes the Inner London total down to under a dozen now. Fair number in Greater London still, thankfully.

Charles Lightoller was Titanic’s second officer. At the time, he lived on Station Road in Netley. He survived Titanic and was twice decorated for gallantry (Royal Navy) in WW1. In 1940, he rescued 120-130 men from Dunkirk in his yacht. Sadly, two of his sons were killed in WW2.
