🚨 #SaveAberdare When comparing the Ihithe - Ndunyu Njeru road project with the Ndaragwa - Kariamu - Ndunyu Njeru alternative, it’s hard to justify the government's choice to pursue the more expensive and environmentally damaging option. Let’s break it down: 🚧 Ihithe - Ndunyu Njeru Road: ▪️Cost: KeS 4.4 billion ▪️Length: 48.3 km (only 15.12 km tarmacked) ▪️Community Impact: Limited to those along the route. ▪️Environmental Impact: Severe—36.78 km cut through the Aberdare ecosystem, threatening fragile habitats, water catchments, and inviting illegal activities like poaching and logging. 🚧 Ndaragwa - Kariamu - Ndunyu Njeru Alternative Route: ▪️Cost: KeS 1.5 billion ▪️Length: 33.6 km (29.62 km tarmacked) ▪️Community Impact: Far-reaching, benefiting more people by improving access to markets, boosting economic growth, and creating jobs. ▪️Environmental Impact: Minimal—only 3.98 km touches the Aberdare ecosystem, ensuring vital habitats and water sources remain intact. At a time when the Kenyan economy is struggling, President Ruto has emphasized the need for spending cuts and increased tax revenues. Shouldn’t the government prioritize the cheaper, more sustainable, and widely beneficial option? The Ndaragwa - Kariamu - Ndunyu Njeru route offers the perfect balance between economic progress and environmental preservation. @AberdareYetu

🌍 Highlights from #RestoreAfrica Programme 🌱 Earlier this week, #TeamGBM had the honor of hosting delegates from the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO), @EverGreeningA & @WorldVisionKE at our #RestoreAfrica Programme sites in @NarokCountyGvt The delegation joined us to witness our shared mission of environmental restoration and community empowerment. Together, we explored: ✅ Efforts to restore degraded landscapes ✅ Farmer Managed Natural Regeneration (FMNR) agroforestry practices ✅ Sustainable livelihood initiatives led by local farmers. Through the #RestoreAfrica Programme, @GreenBeltMovmnt has distributed over 227,000 tree seedlings to farmers across Narok County, paving the way for a greener, more sustainable future. 🌳 This collaboration is a testament to the power of partnership in restoring our planet and empowering communities. 💪✨ 📸 © @JOndeke #RestoreAfrica #EnvironmentalRestoration #CommunityEmpowerment #SustainableFuture #FMNR #ClimateAction

🌳 20 years ago, Prof. Wangari Maathai made history as the first African woman to receive the Nobel Peace Prize for her contribution to sustainable development, democracy, and peace. Today, our forests, rivers, and parks still face threats. If she could stand up, so can we. Each of us holds the power and the responsibility to stay vigilant and demand accountability - we are stewards of the environment, entrusted to protect it for future generations. Be the hummingbird. Do your part. 🌱 Read this compelling call to action by our Advocacy Manager, Job Mwangi, as published in today's @PeopleDailyKe. Together WE CAN WIN. #SaveOurForests #TeamGBM

🚨 Today, GBM officially wrote to Alexander Lemarkoko, The Chief Conservator of Forests @KeForestService seeking urgent clarifications on suspicious developments next to Karura Forest - coordinates (-1.2303198746780726, 36.83560239876185). With public concern mounting, we demand answers on: 📜 The validity of the land titles. 🌳 Whether the land was hived off from the forest. 📈 If an Environmental Impact Assessment was conducted. Karura Forest is more than trees; it’s our heritage, our lungs, and our future. Thank you Kenyans for staying vigilant and raising your voices! Together, we can ensure Karura remains a sanctuary for generations to come. 💚✊ #SaveKarura #SaveOurForest

🌍💔 Kenya’s forests are vanishing before our eyes! Karura, Aberdare, Suam, Oloolua, Ngong and more forests are being destroyed in the name of “progress and development.” This is not just about trees; it is about rivers running dry, wildlife losing their homes, and communities struggling to survive. If the government truly cares about planting 15 Billion trees by 2032, it must walk the talk and protect the forests we still have.🌲🌳 Read this powerful article by our Advocacy Manager, Job Mwangi, as published today by @StandardKenya ➡️ #SaveKarura #AberdareYetu #SaveOurForests

⚡️🆘If the government led by our President H.E. Hon. Dr. @WilliamsRuto is genuine about its 15 billion trees ambition by 2032, it must walk the talk. According to @globalforests, Kenya is losing its forests at an alarming rate. From 2001 to 2023, we have lost 386,000 hectares of tree cover — a staggering 12% decrease since 2000. This deforestation has released approximately 189 million tonnes of CO₂e, fueling climate change and threatening our future. The ongoing destruction of Kenya’s vital forests continues to undermine our nation’s environmental health, biodiversity, and climate stability. Recent developments have placed critical ecosystems such as the Aberdare , Karura, and Suam forests under increasing threat, with projects masquerading as “progress” jeopardizing their future. One of the most alarming cases is the government’s proposal to allocate 50 acres of Suam Forest in Trans Nzoia County for a border town and housing project to support a one-stop border post with Uganda. This plan directly endangers the integrity of Suam Forest and demonstrates a troubling disregard for the long-term ecological consequences of such actions. The situation in Karura Forest is equally troubling, as it stands as a renowned emblem of Kenya’s dedication to environmental conservation. Although an Environment and Land Court injunction has temporarily paused plans to excise 51.64 acres of Karura Forest for the Kiambu Road expansion, continued logging activities within the forest have sparked significant concern. The government’s justification for these actions underscores a widening gap between its proclaimed environmental goals and the reality of its actions. These are not just trees; it is our rivers drying up, wildlife losing their homes, and communities struggling to survive. Forests are life. They give us clean air, water, and hope for a sustainable future. As Kenya faces the urgent challenge of addressing deforestation, these developments call into question the government’s sincerity in safeguarding our forests. If we are to achieve the ambition of planting 15 billion trees by 2032, we must ensure that our existing forests are protected and restored, not destroyed. Let us stand together to defend these irreplaceable ecosystems for future generations. 🌳 #SaveKarura #ArberdareYetu #SaveOurForests

Dear @HonAdanDuale, who holds the titles to Kenya’s water towers? Do they even exist? When were they last mapped and audited? And if not, who is safeguarding these lifelines for future generations? Why now? Why dismantle the Kenya Water Towers Agency when our water towers—Kenya’s lifeblood—are more vulnerable than ever? These ecosystems provide over 75% of our water, sustain agriculture, generate hydropower, and support millions of lives. While there are arguments about duplication of roles, what has changed? Before KWTA was formed, all the agencies now claiming overlap existed—and the challenges remained. KWTA was meant to unite fragmented efforts with a holistic approach. If @NationAfrica's findings are anything to go by, this closure has more to it than meets the eye. Closing KWTA risks undoing progress when our water towers need more protection, not less. Let’s demand accountability and protect what truly matters. #SaveOurWaterTowers #SilencingTheGuardians @KWSKenya @forestserviceKE @PACJA1 @MathaiWanjira @IsaacKalua @UNEP_Africa
