Today the Commissioner announced an additional 166,000km2 of No-Take Zones within our MPA - that's over 8 times the size of Wales! Sustainable fisheries are already strictly regulated, but now 449,000km2 or 36% of our biodiverse waters are totally closed to all fishing activity

Today the Fisheries Patrol Vessel #PharosSG successfully retrieved a sailbuoy on behalf of the @BAS_News British Antarctic Survey, having deployed the device earlier in the month. The sailbuoy collected data on regular surface temperature, salinity, oxygen and chlorophyll.

It's #WorldKrillDay ! Krill is a vital food source for marine animals 🐳🐧 The return of krill-feeding whales, like blue whales, to South Georgia indicates an abundance of krill around #SGSSI . FPV Pharos SG also has a scientific echosounder for year-round measurement of krill.

#SGFactFriday 📜 #SGSSI In early 1922, Sir Ernest Shackleton died while aboard the Quest, moored at King Edward Cove. Lady Shackleton expressed her wish for Sir Ernest Shackleton to be buried at South Georgia. He was buried in Grytviken cemetery.
