My updated profile picture is taken from the cover of my new book, At Dawn They Came: Soviet Terror and Repression 1917-56. The book cover is cut to represent prison bars through which we see the prison mugshot of Elena Amberg. Elena was an ordinary clerk at the First State Bearing Plant in Moscow when she was arrested on 23rd June 1937. On 28th October 1937, she was found guilty of espionage and shot the same day. She was one of the 680,000 victims of the Great Terror of 1937-38. While her body now lies among the 6,600 others buried in the mass graves of the former rifle range of the NKVD (the secret police) at Kommunarka, just outside Moscow. Through her photo and the others included in my book she still lives on, albeit only in print. And don't those eyes haunt you...
