@SchoolsWeek @Counsell_C ‘Systematic knowledge has readied these pupils to be startled by underlying similarity and to discern profound difference.’ Beautifully expressed and brilliantly true. Another great article from @Counsell_C

@olicav @C_Hendrick The marshy shore between disciplines is a fertile but not orderly region. Borden argues that most advances in science come when a person for one reason or another is forced to change fields. Viewing a new field with fresh eyes, and bringing prior knowledge, results in creativity.

@olicav @C_Hendrick The period of incubation could represent a reculer pour mieux sauter, ‘to draw back in order to leap better'. Analogist thinking might allow the mind to discard the straitjacket of habit, countering the anaesthetic of our familiarities.

@olicav @C_Hendrick William James describes the highest order of minds: Instead of thoughts of concrete things patiently following one another, we have the most abrupt cross-cuts and transitions from one idea to another, the most rarefied discriminations, the most unheard-of combinations of elements

@olicav @C_Hendrick Leonardo's process of connecting two apparently dissimilar ideas, like a Law of Continuity: the brain can't focus on two unconnected subjects without forming a connection between them, 'by thinking about some thing that is not related different, unusual patterns are activated.'

@C_Hendrick Great thread Carl, particularly the fascinating links to Shakespeare. FYI, I spent a chapter of my Unfinished Perfection book exploring Koestler's idea of 'bisociation', as that idea formed a core element of Da Vinci’s own schema for innovation.

"The idea that intelligence is an emergent phenomenon arising out of social interaction is a profound one. Thinking is social even when there’s nobody around, because good thinkers have internalised the voices of others..." I simply could not agree more with @mrianleslie.

@RealGeoffBarton To quote @JonnieNoakes (from the article) ‘many state schools already work effectively on developing children’s skills in using spoken language’ so perhaps he’s merely trying to address some schools who don’t? So I don’t see the point of the peremptory and rude dismissal?

@drdavidajames My heart sinks when I see that terrifying word ‘relevant’. There’s a certainty that what follows will be both patronising and stupid.

I think this is superb. An excellent examination of 'Illusory Learning and Knowledge' that is now crippling education. To support learning we need to expose our students to their own ignorance, regularly. Post-apocalyptic education, by @emollick
