Sr. Environment Artist @ Epic Games on Fortnite. Prev. Lead Env Artist @ Riot on VALORANT, @ Volition. I like giant robots and 3d printing. Opinions my own.
When one door closes another one opens. The past few months have been a little hectic... but I'm SO VERY EXCITED to share that, starting next week, I'm joining the fine folks at Epic Games! I can't wait :D
@opalartsy
Its the high frame rate that is so offputting. Might have been some post process tweening thing to blend in extra frames.
Some 120hz TVs can do this automatically...its...super wierd watching tv at a framerate higher than 24fps
@RDurandArt
LOL, I've been chewed out by a few people back in the day for touching up normal maps by hand.
I can't remember where I found this, but its a handy little guide for hand painting normal maps:
Little late to the party but...Hi
#PortfolioDay
!
I'm George, im an Environment Art Lead at Riot! Most recent work is from VALORANT. Currently working on learning Houdini in my free time...someday I'll finish a new personal piece :P
For art folks who may be considering spending less time on the twitters may I suggest to you this particular website from the before times called polycount dot com.
I suppose technically today is my last day as a Riot Employee. News of the layoffs broke about 2 months ago but the official end date is today. In fact, I just got my exit paperwork a few moments ago. 1/7
Check out this interview about VALORANT's latest skinline, Cryostasis!
There was a part in the article where
@oniram177
talked about some inspiration for the line. He referenced an icicle shader I made a long time ago.
If you are curious, this is the gif he mentioned:

In an EXCLUSIVE interview, we discuss the new
@PlayVALORANT
Cryostasis skin line with Senior Manager of Game Production
@Preeti_Riot
and Associate Art Director
@oniram177
. They chat the new look, fortunate timing, and design process at Riot:

I think this was the first time I got really any attention for my work on the interwebs. Folks really liked the displaced ice shader. Funny enough, all the images from the old
@Polycount
thread are still up!

Its been a wild ride at Volition. After almost 7 years its time for my next adventure. Happy to say that, next month, I'll be moving to the Los Angeles area to join Riot Games!
Heyya! Here is some of my contribution to LOTUS, our newest VALORANT map!
All of our maps are a team effort. This team is amazing and I'm proud of everybody who helped ship this map :D

Week 3 of funemployment!
Around this time the gravity of the situation starts settling in, the initial shock is over, the social media storm and the initial outpouring of support slows down a bit. It gets a little quieter.
I know this part can feel lonely and tough. 1/2
Weird ass day. Still processing but I did want give a big thank you to all the folks who reached out. Its truly humbling to have so many people offering support. Sorry I left a lot of people on read, I will get back to you, just a little overwhelmed at the moment.
dear senior gamedevs. Stop fucking voluntarily crunching. It doesn't make you a hero. It only spreads unrealistic expectations to the rest of your team. ok love you bye.
@dekubrush
@TimSweeneyEpic
This isn't even just about personal artwork, Artstation was THE place for professionals to post their portfolio work.....from massive IPs that we do not own nor do we have the right to say either way if its appropriate to be scraped for commercial use.
Oh hello
#MeetTheDev
! I'm George, and I'm an Environment Artist. I've been making games for a little over 10 years now. I've also worked on military sims and occasionally freelance on indie games. I'm currently the Lead Environment Artist on an unannounced project at Volition!
Hiyya! We are looking to bring on a mid-level Environment Artist on the VALORANT maps team! I'm obviously biased but I think this team is pretty neat. Join us!!!

Spent the better part of 2 hours trying to troubleshoot UE5's viewport constantly rotating, thought something was wrong with my mouse.
I had a controller plugged in that fell on the floor and the joystick was tilted :/
I know lots of gamedevs are feeling salty about learning how some big twitch streamers make WAYYY more than us, but something to consider:
This is the top .01% of streamers. I'm certain the salary of the top .01% within the games industry will also make all of us jealous.
Been a little quiet about this as we had a pretty rough week in the NICU, but last Saturday my son was born! We finally got to bring him home yesterday :)
Welp, safe to assume the call I had scheduled to talk to a recruiter at Blizzard is probably not happening.....
What a shitty week, sorry to all those who are probably finding out right now that they are affected.
I'll share more in the near future, but I did land on my feet and I figured out what I'm going to be doing next....and I'm pretty excited about it :D 7/7
Being a family man and having a full time job and also trying to stay current with games and also finding time for other ways for creative outlet and also staying healthy/sleeping is really really really hard
Hey! Excited to say that I'm joining the awesome folks at
@ment_coalition
as a mentor! I'm pretty excited to help folks grow and improve their craft!

The VALORANT team is taking a 'team rest day' today so I'm spending the morning pretending its 2008 again and sculpting a personal project while listening to Fall Out Boy. Getting strong feels remembering working on my folio everyday hoping to break into the industry.
As I unceremoniously renamed an asset in UE4 because of a typo, I just remembered how once upon a time I worked in an engine for like 5 years that didn't let you rename stuff. You either had to live with the wrong name or wipe the asset from P4 and start over.

Remember when all the cool kids were painting colored spec maps, matching colors to diffuse for metallic surfaces and using inverse colors for dialectric surfaces?
No? Fine get off my lawn.
@GrantPDesign
Not only is it possible to work on a great game w/o suffering, but us creative folk do our best work when we are happy, healthy, and have a real work/life balance..so the game benefits from it.
Ratchet and Clank looks like its gonna be a banger, can't wait to play it! Congrats!
On the topic of

rejections. I've had 10 art tests.
1st one I failed, tried to fix/resubmit but was rejected.
2nd one ghosted me after I submitted my test, never heard from them again.
2 more rejections, both from my 2 "dream studios" and within a week of each other.
Lil somthin I've been working on for a while in my spare time! Based on a wonderful #

Freetime is limited these days so progress is slow, but I'm planning to do a finished game res version eventually :P

Lol this coversation about "what is blockout"
There is no singular correct workflow that applies to every circumstance, discipline, or project. Touch grass.
@JoeJacobs3D
LOL. I can't believe Maya would sent you money via paypal though...they would still have the audacity to ask for an unreasonable monthly subscription for their time instead.
Got an email from Walmart yesterday saying the

I preordered back in September might be delayed. Not too happy about this...decided to go with the

instead.
Any concept artists in the LA area interested in a contract gig at Riot working on the VALORANT maps team?
We don't have a job posting up for it, but feel free to contact me directly!

Whats it like living in LA on the westside you ask? Well let me tell you, I pay 4k a month for a 2 bedroom apartment and every day that I go outside there is always dog shit on the sidewalk. Weather is great, tho.
QA is a super important and often under appreciated career path.
Shoutout to
@Kalaena
and
@KiWiKiDLoL
who are absolutely essential parts of the Val Maps team.
LOL just found the maxfile for the first (and only) character I ever made. This was in college...maybe 2005 or 2006 ish? First time I ever tried using zbrush. LOL
If any folks also affected by layoffs this year, Riot or otherwise, ever want to chat, complain, need some dank memes, whatever....even if we don't know each other, my DMs are open :) 2/2
I feel incredibly lucky, both games were lightning in a bottle.
Technically the Saints Row reboot would be the last full game to ship, but you know...live service game and whatnot.
Not the best time for my Artstation Pro account to lapse and lose my domain name lol. If anybody happens to be looking at my portfolio and doesn't work, please look here instead while I figure out how to get it back up:
@JLHGameArt
This is silly. Juniors and recent entries into the industry are a great resource...in many ways actually better than seniors.
The way many senior folks got into the industry does not apply any more...these folks JUST DID IT!
Today is my 1 year anniversary
@riotgames
! In spite of all the craziness going on in the world this year, my job has been a bright spot for me. I love this place and I love my team. Looking forward to many more years of making
@PlayVALORANT
the best it can be for our players!
@Necrit94
This actually happens quite a lot in concept art. Its called photobashing. Concept artists do this a lot to get details down very quickly. Often times concepts aren't a fully rendered painting, but a quickly put together hodgepodge of techniques to get an idea across.
