@NicholasGuyatt @_hoolio I think itās a big problem but a fascinating one. When I came to Norway I was outraged to find I had to swipe my bank card in my Drās office every time. I hadnāt realised how privileged Iād been in the U.K. I really hope they donāt abandon those core principles of the NHS

@_hoolio @NicholasGuyatt A real expert on this tells me that the Norwegian system was very successful after 1997 but then future governments put the breaks on as costs spiralled. Now it is about a lack of funding for doctors, nurses, and beds, despite the extra payments/ top ups

@_hoolio @NicholasGuyatt Iād have to read more about it but Iād like to know why waiting lists are so long. Not only have private services been incorporated into the public health system to try to cope but a small private health system has started to emerge, which would have been unthinkable decades ago

@_hoolio @NicholasGuyatt Thinking about this is sobering. Even such a well-funded public system in a very rich country struggles to meet demand :(

@NicholasGuyatt Agreed. In Norway I think nobody under 16 pays. Iād like to think the most vulnerable donāt pay but I donāt know that for a fact. Problem with top up fees is they rely on the functioning of a sensible & humane system. I donāt even trust Norway to maintain one forever

@NicholasGuyatt I see. Yes, that would be worse. The system here is being privatised more and more (more than people realise). Inequalities are increasing but marginally & slowly so itās tolerated. But in U.K. I wouldnāt trust it at all! Weāve seen whatās happened to universitiesā¦
