@ElijahElishaRap @velikovec Does Philip the presbyter say that? Also, wasn't the judgment/condemnation of Nestorius something conducted in common, by the council?

@ElijahElishaRap @velikovec The general context, yes. However, the context of the forgiveness of sins is the more common application for the power of the keys - and this particular quote is no different.

@ErickYbarra3 @ElijahElishaRap Hmmm... does this have a bearing on Papal infallibility? Or are you referencing something else?

@ElijahElishaRap @velikovec I'm saying that the power of the keys referenced in that quote is the forgiveness of sins.

@velikovec @ElijahElishaRap Proterius was also elected to the Patriarchal See, despite opposition from the non-Chalcedonians. See also:

@velikovec @ElijahElishaRap Maximianus was elected to the Patriarchate by the synod of Constantinople, which accepted the deposition of Nestorius. Problem resolved.

@velikovec @ElijahElishaRap And yet his legitimate successor accepted Ephesus. The same with Dioscorus. This suffices for universal recognition.

@velikovec @ElijahElishaRap Actually, the sense of the keys given to Peter was clarified at the Council of Ephesus, by Philip the presbyter. It references the power to forgive sins. I'm going to include the quote from Augustine here as well.

In 548, Vigilius condemned the 3C in his Judicatum, and there was a lot of pushback in the West - portions of Italy broke communion with him, and North Africa even excommunicated him (see below). This pushback caused Vigilius to retract his Judicatum (see below) and likely contributed to his FC reversing his position on the 3C. Chadwick covers a lot of this in his book "The Church in Ancient Society."

@EthanWayne2001 There are bigger issues in the East/West divide, and such a move would trivialize the doctrinal issues that divide us. Once we settle those matters, we can look at saints.

@FaveatFortuna @UbiPetrus2019 @ErickYbarra3 @ElijahElishaRap Hmmmm.... this is an unfair burden to place on anyone. You have the responsibility to do your own research/reading/prayers on these matters. Debates can be informational and useful, but it's a mistake to look to them for the determination as to which Church is the True Church.

The power to forgive sins is the most common context in which the power of the keys are referenced by the Fathers. However, in Matthew 18 the keys were given to all the Apostles, St. John Chrysostom even says St. John the Apostles received the keys. However, St. Jerome also refers to the Bishops having the power of the keys in terms of governance.

@velikovec @ElijahElishaRap It's simple enough, really. In the case of the 7 ecumenical councils, the signatures of the Patriarchs was sufficient.

@arrokodus @orthodoxxin You are correct. However, I believe he's an inquirer, and doctrines concerning the Theotokos can be particularly hard to grasp, depending on his background. Some patience here, brother.
