they died in the cellars of the buildings they lived in - probably because they lived in illegal apartments in those cellars, which exist because rent is too high, and which are unsafe because they were not designed for people to live in

the Labor Management Relations Act penalties for getting fired for union organizing are minimal - a small fine equivalent to a traffic ticket and a little bit of back pay - and it takes years to get that back pay
