On 1 February 1915 Germany embarked its first campaign of unconditional submarine warfare against merchant shipping. The most famous event of this period was the sinking of the RMS Lusitania in May. Less well known are the exploits of SM U-8 which sank five ships in two days.

@historybythpint It's amazing just how small those initial subs were in WWI. The Gato's in WWII, while not large by modern standards, were so much bigger than their WWI predecessors...
