James Madison doesn't get in the dance if it doesn't win the Sun Belt tournament. Indiana State got shut out simply by not winning the MVC tournament. You wanna expand opportunities? Fine, but do it for the actual good teams.
Arkansas and Eric Musselman killing it on the transfer market per usual. They landed Pitt’s Au’diese Toney last week and today get Miami’s Chris Lykes.
I’ve been railing on Virginia, but Colorado State probably shouldn’t have been in First Four. Six Q1 wins, smoked Creighton on a neutral. Mountain West was severely disrespected in seeding.
How many coaches would pose for photos like this? Or ask players what defense they want to play? Or do a video for the tennis team 27 hours before hosting Kentucky?
How the unique Eric Musselman is rebuilding Arkansas, from 3 days inside the program:.
Here’s my story on
@RazorbackMBB
making its first Sweeet 16 since 1996, and how its time to give Eric Musselman his due as one of the top coaches in the game.
I spent the weekend behind the scenes with
@RazorbackMBB
as they got ready for their biggest game in years. How Eric Musselman’s unique style has the Razorbacks on the rise:
I love that Clemson is considered either right on or in many cases on the right side of the bubble despite a 1-10 Quad 1 record. 1-10! How many wins do you think a good mid-major would have if you gave them 11 bites at the apple? Certainly couldn’t be worse than 1, right?
Most Quad 1 wins before Selection Sunday since NET began (2018-19):
Michigan State: 13 (2019)
Virginia (2019), Kansas (2020) and Illinois (2021): 12
This year's Kansas team has 13 Quad 1 wins right now, with two Q1 games left in regular season plus Big 12 tourney.
.
@RazorbackMBB
has a balanced team that is good at pretty good at everything. Its biggest strength might be its unselfishness. How the Hogs have reeled off seven straight SEC wins.
Babysitter just reported that our 2-year-old was shooting on her plastic basketball goal and shouting “Onions!” on every make. The babysitter was confused. I’ve never been prouder.
Y'all realize what's coming Saturday?
Duke-UNC
Houston-Kansas
Tennessee-Kentucky
UConn-St. John's at MSG
Utah State at San Diego State
Saint Mary's at Gonzaga
Iowa State at Baylor
Then Purdue at Wisconsin on Sunday
There was no compelling reason to put Virginia in this tournament. Committee had a free out here, even most Virginia fans didn’t want to see this team play any more. You did this to yourself, NCAA.
The Athletic asked us to write about the best NCAA Tournament game we ever covered. I chose Louisville’s incredible comeback against West Virginia in the 2005 Elite Eight, with fresh memories from

Some personal news: I’ve accepted the position of senior editor for

. Excited to launch this new phase of my career. Thanks for reading and subscribing, as always.
Teams with more Quad 1 wins than Northwestern's 7 right now*:
Kansas
Purdue
Texas
Baylor
That's it, that's the list.
(*Iowa State is about to get its 8th vs TCU)
To recap: NC State and Oregon come out of nowhere to steal bids, Temple assures a stolen bid and gets one game away from the NCAAT while under gambling suspicion ... and Long Beach St. just made the tourney after firing coach Dan Monson on Monday.
Other than that, pretty normal.
I feel awful for everybody involved, but especially for a team like Dayton that had a once-in-a-generation run and a shot at winning it all. And for Penn State and Rutgers. Who knows if they’ll get back soon.
“Where I come from, ain’t nothing easy.”
@CUBuffsMBB
star guard McKinley Wright IV played through a torn labrum last year, which seemed minor compared to the pain of losing his father to a prison sentence as a child.
Marquette is tied for the most Q1 wins in the country with five. And if Providence were two spots higher, the Golden Eagles would lead the nation in Q1 wins. Crazy.
With Ohio State's continued collapse, North Carolina now has zero Quad 1 wins, with only two Q1 games left on the regular-season schedule right now.
UNC and Kentucky are a combined 1-15 in Quad 1 games. Unreal.
Alabama coach Nate Oats and assistant Bryan Hodgson are proving that high major recruiting experience is less important than relationship building skills.
Pat Kelsey went 57-12 his last two years at Winthrop, won league regular season and tournament titles both times. He's 58-11 the past two years at Charleston, won league regular season and tournament titles both times.
Dan Gavitt says on CBS that the up-to-date information the committee has is that Kevin McCullar Jr., Hunter Dickinson and Tyler Kolek will all "be available without restrictions" for the first round of the NCAA Tournament. That should particularly impact Kansas' seeding.
There's simply no case for putting North Carolina in the NCAA Tournament, and the selection committee should and will get roasted if it loses its collective mind and puts the Tar Heels in.
Washington State transfer Malachi Flynn has committed to San Diego State, a source told me. Flynn averaged 15.8 ppg and 4.3 apg for the Cougars last season. Will sit one, play two for Aztecs.
The country’s most voracious dunker (and a possible first-rounder). Four impact transfers. Veterans at PG and on the wing. Why
@DaytonMBB
will be a team to watch this season, especially if the Obi-Ibi combo takes off.
I did a deep dive on Arkansas for our State of the Hoops program. College basketball was never more fun for me than when Nolan and Pitino had it going in that mid-90s Arkansas-Kentucky rivalry. Can Eric Musselman bring the buzz back to Fayetteville?
