SARS-CoV-2 is a systemic virus that affects the whole body, but mounting evidence shows that the brain is the organ most consistently affected in the short and long term. Letting this virus roam may prove extremely expensive for our societies. New important study out in Nature ⬇️

For all those who still believe herd immunity as a concept applies to SARS-CoV-2: It doesn't. We'll be infected again and again, and the data now tell us that the risk of serious long-term effects increases with each infection. Govts need to re-think & find a new & better plan 1/

Norway is seeing the world’s first omicron superspreader event after a party downtown Oslo last Friday. Of 120 healthy non-symptomatic fully vaccinated individuals with a negative test, two had recently returned from South Africa and turned out to be positive, omicron. 1/

New pre-print that found a very limited immune response after infection with omicron. The desired herd immunity effect may according to this be a far dream still: from this, seems you can be re-infected more or less directly after your last infection

So it's clear: SARS-CoV-2 infects T lymphocytes, preferably activated CD4+ cells in vitro, independently of the ACE2 receptor and induces pronounced programmed cell death potentially contributing to the lymphopenia seen in ~80% of hospitalized C19 patients

This is a disgrace. In Norway, 200,000 people have diligently given info on their post Covid health status over time for the large Korona study. But the researchers have to give up their work on analyzing the data due to lack of funding

This is a very important 🧵 depicting how organized disinformation from the Swedish Inst of Public Health @Folkhalsomynd has affected policies in Sweden. This has unfortunately applied to Norway, Denmark, and Finland, too, negatively affecting their handling of the pandemic.

In spring 2020, when other countries closed all schools, Sweden kept primary schools open, with mandatory in-person attendance and without protective measures such as testing or quarantines. Sweden then told the world COVID didn't spread in schools. It wasn't true. 🧵

Happy to say our theoretical calculations on mass testing as means to control transmission of a(ny) virus, and corresponding comment, have been published in @LancetRH_Europe We must develop more efficient and less restrictive alternatives to protect public health going forward

#MasksWork

On pandemic #disinformation : «Even before the first wave peaked, doctors suggested the worst was over and that measures to control the virus were more dangerous than the virus itself. This message was repeated regularly throughout the pandemic.»

Men nei. Nei. La oss kutte i sykelønna. Folk er blitt bortskjemt.

@barbvee This also is not looking too good for the "open up and let it rip" crowd. Norway, two months after we did just that - before Omicron arrived.

This is not good news. They report of a person infected with both delta and gamma at the same time. Then the two variants have recombined in that person, meaning they “swapped” some parts of the genes, put bluntly. This smells like trouble.

And more: In Denmark, altogether 183 cases are now confirmed, 32 by sequencing, the rest by variant PCR (this method now found to be sufficiently precise by Statens serum Institut SSI). Denmark now reports ongoing transmission among people not traveling

@DavidSteadson This is from yesterday, when 60 of the 120 were PCR positive. Of note: of the 13 confirmed omicron cases, some are reported as being other guests not at the party but present at the restaurant the same evening.

Important 🧵⬇️ Those who think the scientific community are fighting over COVID/long COVID: A huge part of it is not scientific discourse but intended, organized, repeated dis-/misinformation from a couple of handfuls of players supported by big money from far right capitalists.

I want to share my thoughts, as someone who has been so alarmed by the so-called "dissident" scientists like Gupta, Heneghan, Kuldorff, Bhattacharya, & Ioannidis who consider themselves brave Galileos unfairly treated by "establishment scientists." I will try not to swear. 1/n

@zweinebelkerzen @F_Lund_Johansen Covid actually has few similarities to flu aside from transmission via air. Covid is a systemic disease that damages blood vessels and organs around the body, including lungs and brain, and often leads to the creation of autoantibodies; immunological changes may be long lasting1/

The Norway example: what you get when you, after having controlled the pandemic well through TTI, NPIs, and vaccines, at 50% fully vaxx, 70% 1 dose choose to open schools with Delta in circulation, with no measures to control spread. School started week 33.
