Refereed a game last night (U15 division 4 shield final, about as far from Sam Maguire as it gets!)
One team won by 24 points. They made 2 subs (corner back & corner forward), and 3 players on the bench got no game time.
When will coaches learn 😩
“You don’t need to practice as a kid, you need to play, you need to enjoy it; just mess around, kick with both legs. Learn it without even realising that you’re practicing.”

“The game itself is unstructured. Anything can happen in a game, but one thing that doesn’t happen is running to one cone and turning with the ball to go to another cone.”

“Improving players is the single biggest thing you enjoy most about coaching. If you improve each player and empower them to make their own decisions you’re going to have a serious team.”

“The manager is always remote on the sidelines. The players cannot hear you or see you gesturing. All of your work must be done before then setting a clear vision and empowering senior players to step up and be autonomous.”

“Once you cross that white line you’re out there on your own. The only influence the manager has is how well you’ve trained and prepared. You will always fall to the level of training that you have done.”

Could the solo be coached better in Gaelic football?
Is it better to coach opposite hand/opposite foot to suit natural running mechanics?

“There’s no magic formula as a coach. But ultimately it’s down to a player themselves to improve. You can’t blame a manager or coach.
If you want to improve at any level, at any sport, it’s ultimately down to yourself.”

Interesting to see in these times how many players have invested in a football to work on skills.. on top of doing runs and investing in S&C equipment.

Colm Hutton’s outrageous finish for Carlow today, deep into injury-time, two points down to Leitrim who were about to join Laois on 8 pts in the table.
Some goal.
Hutton goes down the far side then and makes a block as Leitrim chased an equalising point
“Bad coaches try to play the game from the line, you can’t do that. Hurling is an instinctive game and you have to learn the skills and apply the skills and it’s down to the player then to make the decision.”
