we had those conversations, and were happy with the knowledge they gained in school sex ed. Also important was teaching consent, that they did not have to let adults touch ( hug kiss etc) them if they were not comfortable. Not always an easy lesson for some adults to learn.

The premise is you only expected to get half way across with each light, because pedestrians have nothing better to do than stand for 3-4 min between multiple lanes of traffic breathing fumes and hoping not to be killed. But this way drivers are minimally impeded.

1988 I was writing papers in University on these issues. on the health benefits not from riding but from noise reduction, reduced pollution and stress. lets hope 40 years later the knowledge we had then starts getting listened too.

The timings designed to trap...err keep pedestrian safe at the mid point, and then in 3-5 minutes they will be able to complete the crossing. That way the people in cars protected from weather and of far more importance will only be delayed for 20 seconds every 5 minutes
